After last night's trade, I was thinking about it a bit, and I came to a realization about the Pens: don't expect the young guys to get called up this season.

And it's not (just) because of Sullivan.

Dubas and Spezza have talked about how having a winning team in WB/S is important for development. The NHL team is currently going nowhere, but WB/S is one of the top teams in the AHL. To that end, there is a certain degree of sense in keeping the prospects in WB/S for the rest of this year in hopes of actually contending for the Calder Cup. And if they want to do that, that means having non-prospect players on the NHL roster in the meantime.

Bringing in players who are signed through next year, but aren't part of the long-term plans, fits this model just fine. You want to start calling up the prospects to get NHL experience next season, after hopefully having a bunch of success in the AHL this year. At that point, you can move out the now-pending UFAs to make space, since those guys aren't in the long-term plans. If they win the Calder Cup this spring, you consider moving players out over the summer, but otherwise, let it happen leading up to next year's deadline.

To this end, I wouldn't expect to see Heinen or Schenn moved out unless there's an NHL player coming back either in return or via a different trade (similar to how Desharnais was immediately replaced by Schenn). Though I suppose for forwards, the Pens can still just bring up Nieto to keep the prospects cooking down in Wilkes-Barre.

I'm not saying that's the route I would take, but at least there's a logic to it, and the moves made so far are consistent with such a plan.

I think most people here are expecting that none of the young guys, outside of maybe Ponomarev, get called up before the end of the year. Personally I'm fine with it, playing big minutes on a good AHL team is better than playing low minutes on a shitty NHL team.

I think Koivunen is on L2, McGroarty is on L3 and Pickering is Letang's partner to start next year, assuming their play warrants it, but I don't think most people are expecting any young guys to be called up.

I think the Leafs are gonna pay through the nose for him.

What I would love is Dubas floating Novak out there with Schenn. "hey, you don't wanna pay through the roof for Laughton? I have Novak here and we can talk about adding Schenn! Certainly for less than you'll pay for Laughton"

I mean a Novak+Schenn package seems like exactly what Toronto would be targeting.

Let's not mention that Leafs fans also defend that core and defend Treliving's decisions to keep it together. Shh no need.

Rumor has it Dubas wanted to trade one before protection went into place.
 
I feel like Minten for Schenn at 50% is something Toronto would do. My only issue with it is that I'm not super high on Minten's upside, he just feels like another potential bottom-6 center caliber guy.
