Additionally, I'm not convinced that he's #1 on anyone's list. With Rantanen and Boeser available, as well as a guy like Brock Nelson, I think quite a few dominos have to fall and things have to line up right. Rakell's contract has to fit into a team's plans for the next three years AND they have to be willing to pay AND they have to miss out on flashier toys. So I honestly think the market for Rakell is thinner than we might think.

That's a totally different market.

1. Is for UFA's
2. Is for guys with term.

Meaning Rantanen and Boeser are not holding up Rakell.

The price on the UFA's are going to be staggering just the same as going for a guy with term.

Which would you rather have?

The guy who's gonna walk or the one who's on a cheap deal for 3 more?

I mean, I guess whom ever is gonna win you a cup, but that is based on the team who needs the least help, or puts them clearly over the top.
 
People seem amped for this Peterka dude. You get a 1st and Clarke for Rakell, then flip that LA 1st and the Rangers' 1st for Peterka. What's the balance of value there? Fair? Do the Sabres add? Do they even give a shit about two 1sts in the like 15-20 range? :laugh:

This sounds weird, but Rakell is too valuable of a trade chip to not get back a notable asset that is what you're looking for. If the package Rakell returns is two 1sts but you don't really want the 2 1sts, I don't think you should take it just because it's "good value". Using LA, you basically need to pull off an asset like Turcotte, Greentree or Clarke in the deal for me to pull the trigger on it.

I agree with not accepting only picks because Dumoulin went for a prospect and a great pick for his value. And Francis fleeces BriseBois yesterday. So yeah.

I would ask LA if they could accept Jarry in a Rakell deal. Or Graves.

You get less back but you probably get normal value and get rid of a problem at the same time.

Why would the Penguins do that?

They're not even close to the cap going forward. Why would they sacrifice value on Rakell just to get out of some bad deals that are inconsequential to them?

I can't see Buffalo moving Peterka for picks. It'd be for a player.

I do feel like Buffalo could be the perfect spot for Rust in the summer once his trade protection is gone.

“Some thoughts and whispers/comments from me and around the interwebs:

--The overall thought was that Dubas really liked Novak. They've targeted him for over a year. He has good underlying numbers, he has good speed, and he is a career 15% shooter. In terms of straight Bunting for Novak...they shaved 1M off the cap, they added a player with an extra year of term, and he is several years younger.

--My concern is, this is now the THIRD player we've taken from Nashville to try and squeeze more out of them. It's worked to date with Tomasino...but let's see how he finishes the year, and if he can keep up the same pace next year. That has been the issue with Tomasino, game to game and/or year to year consistency. Glass has great analytics but can't finish a paint by numbers. Analyst think Novak has the ability to put up 50-60 points, but he hasn't done it yet.

--Schenn is an upgrade over Desharnais. Schenn has the most total hits by any defenseman since 2008. If Dubas doesn't plan to flip him, my thinking is that Dubas has the groundwork set for a Karlsson trade this summer, and the thought process is for Brunicke to come in next season. They like Schenn's leadership.

--DK site has doubled down that Rakell doesn't get moved. Both DK and Taylor say it is hard to envision Dubas trading both of his top 6 LWs away”

I don't think you dilute the value of a guy like Rakell, or Rust, or EK, just to potentially get out of a Jarry or Graves deal. Those two deals don't matter anymore. The players suck and in Jarry's case, are annoying to boot, but that's fine. This team's in the business of losing for a good long while, whether they want to admit it or not.

I'm not sure why Carolina and Rantanen, can't do something like, sign a 1 year deal and agree to aggressively find a proper location for him with an extension in place in the summer, or sign the 8 year deal and agree to trade him. Put contract outs in the contract if he feels they aren't trying to trade him, and let us get on with enjoying whatever we can from a shitty regular season so far lol

Yeah even if you plan on contending by like 2028, Jarry's deal will be expired by then and Graves' deal will be easily able to be bought out. Really no reason to lose value on Rakell to get out of their deals now.

Stash both in the AHL until it's convenient to either buy them out or trade them for nothing.

1. Yes they are different
2. Not every team wants the extra 3 years. Some do just want the rental.
3. If I'm a team on a budget right now, I might opt for the rental. Come July 4th when the big FAs have their bloated contracts handed out, I'd want Rakell.

It's not an all or nothing approach. As Dubas has correctly indicated, we are very much the driver.

I don't understand this line of thought. They swapped Bunting for Novak. The net change in top-9 forwards is zero, Novak is probably just going to slide into Bunting's old spot.

The Penguins are in no different of a position with their forward group today than they were yesterday, just that Novak is more ideally a center but can play LW.

Hmmm..that's actually an aspect I didn't consider. I mean, we have the guys to fill in and we are likely targeting a young wing in return on some level. Or you just keep Beauvillier.

Glass-Malkin-Tomasino
Heinen-Hayes-Beau

It's not sexy but it helps us get a better pick. I would hope delusions of playoff play isn't clouding the better judgment of guys like Sid, Geno, and Letang.

Or what I would do:

Malkin-Sid-Rust
Glass-Novak-Tomasino

Get Sid and Geno dem points!

To be somewhat serious however, there was a player poll not that long ago that mentioned Carolinas ownership being a repellant for players and agents, and the franchise didn't come off too favorable.

Edit to add one poll: NHL player poll: Best/worst facilities? NBA-style tournament? Season too long? Should Bettman retire?

With these trade packages coming in return for some of these players, the Penguins should be trying to unload everyone at the deadline.
