I have to have my tools!
SealBound has a point. The Stars should not be trading Bichsel. But we're not going to agree overall.
This is a unique scenario. The Stars lost a top-5 defenseman in the world and they're second in the west. If they want to make a serious Cup run, they need an impact player to fill that spot now, so they're in a time crunch.
The Pens are the only team that can offer a piece with the capability to be that stopgap, but they're in no hurry. They could trade Karlsson now, with very few suitors, or they could hold on to him until the summer, when that market would open up with more trade partners and higher offers.
The Bourque, Dumba, 26 1st offer isn't good.
-Bourque's ceiling is a middle-six RW or a 3C, but his stature probably forces him to the W in the NHL.
-If the Pens pull the trigger on this trade, Dallas's 26 1st will be VERY late. Might as well be a 2nd.
-Dumba has negative value.
GMKK shouldn't take it, and he doesn't have to. So Dallas has two options: all-in now, or play it safe. I wouldn't fault them for either.
If I'm GMKK, there are two offers I'd accept from Dallas:
-Bichsel, Dumba, 26 2nd
-Bourque, Hemming, Dumba, 26 1st
With Karlsson retained however necessary on both to make the numbers work.
The former is much preferred. The latter, while acceptable, is just the Guenzel trade all over again, with GMKK firing birdshot hoping something really hits.
