I don't think the Devils will be adding a ton.

Jack Hughes being out all playoffs totally kills their chances.
I agree that it kills their chances, but I don't think they feel they have a choice but to try. That organization is getting a little desperate and it could lead to a wild decision or two.

The thing about Rantanen potentially being available is that if the Hurricanes do move him, they're going to need to immediately replace him in their lineup - they're a playoff team that thinks they're a Cup Contender. The only reason they might move Rantanen at all is because they don't think they can keep him beyond being a rental.
So, while other teams would prefer Rantanen to Rakell, it doesn't change the overall number of teams in the market for a top six forward - since the Hurricanes would add to the overall demand, in the end.

Bad for Raks value if Rantanen is in play IMO

I'd be pissed with Rantanen if I was Carolina. They offered him the money so clearly its a location issue. I'd be pressing him hard on where he WOULD sign and see if I can make a deal there. Otherwise, rental price will suck. You're looking at the Guentzel return which, while not bad, is certainly less than you paid for him.

Great move by Colorado sending him out.

Pens are gonna get Clarke and then Sullivan is going to take a month before playing him because "he needs to learn our system".

This makes sense. The amount of brain damage you need to understand what the Pens are doing can’t be safely acquired overnight
Years of being taught how to do a controlled break out takes time to unlearn. Spinning and firing the puck down the ice takes time to adjust to.

They knew the risk when they made the deal. Makes no sense for them to be pissed. Nor does it have any utility.

If they can’t get a contract done, they’ll likely recoup a decent return for him. I don’t really like Carolina but I don’t see it as an epic blunder. Necas was probably gone this summer anyway.

They’re gonna be players for Rantanen IMO
And if Rantanen is not traded or traded there, maybe they would have some interest in a slightly used Rakell for their 2026 first and Nemec?…

Actually, I wonder if smoke around Buffalo is true if Dubas tries for Rakell + our Rangers first for Peterka? …more offseason move most likely but Buffalo would be stupid to bite on that

I appreciate you finally having some optimism Andy but you gotta bring your hopes down on what Raks brings back haha

Fiala is a 70+ pt winger in a highly defensive system.

They gave up a 1st and Faber when they had multiple RHD prospects above him in their system in Clarke, Walker, Durzi, Roy, Spence, etc.

They utilized one of their lesser assets who would never get the playing time Faber did in Minnesota.

PLD was a 2C who is proving he is one in Washington. LA used him as a 3C.

They gave up a pick, Vilardi who is often injured, a mid prospect Kupari, and a cap dump in Iafallo.

Both of these trades were fine in terms of assets.

He's signed for next year as well. He wanted the role and ice time more than anything and he got in Carolina.
Broke: keep Rakell-Crosby-Rust together to help Crosby put up points
Woke: make L1 Rantanen-Crosby-Marner to help Crosby put up points
$14mil - $8.7mil - $14mil

Get woke, go broke
