Salary Cap: '24-'25 Salary Thread: Crosbicles Volume MMXXVI: Sid is Still Goat

I don't want to be giving away cap space for nothing. We might not care about it, but if it makes life easier for the Kings to dump a guy then they need to pay for the service.

LA has about $4.3 million in cap space so they might just be cap compliant with swapping Clarke for Rakell.

Clarke out and Rakell in puts them at like $200k in cap space with 13 F and 7 D, which I figure they may prefer to have a bit more wiggle room. That said, having a 22 man roster for the rest of the year isn't that big of a deal.

Either way, I'd be pretty happy to just get Clarke for Rakell straight up. He'd instantly be their best young player and it makes trading Karlsson an absolute no brainer.

There'll be top-six openings. You can pay him close to minimum, play him in the top-six and trade him at the next deadline for a pretty good pick.
That is an excellent use of cap in the Pens situation. Even if he only netted a 3rd, that's still smart spending.
Isn't the idea to get younger? So now we're signing Vrana off the scrap heap to play with Sid or Geno next season, while McGroarty and Koivunen play where?

I don’t think Karlsson needs replaced if we were to trade him. Would Clarke be awesome to come in and take his spot? Sure. But if there is a 1st on the table for Karlsson you make that deal whether you have a replacement or not, imo.

Vrana-Sid-Geno
Bunting-Pono-Tomasino
McG-Broz-Koivunen

f*** it, go nuts. Rakell at the TDL. Rust and EK in July. See what the young kids have, and hopefully tank your way to McKenna and Dupont cuz realistically none of them really matter.

So far McGroarty hasn't even shown that he can handle bottom-six NHL duty. And he didn't exactly light it up in Wilkes. Bottom-six here next year is fine for him, until he shows that he deserves more.
And Koivunen has zero NHL games. Who knows what he can do at this level?
Vrana is a higher percentage play imo.

The primary objective should be to replenish our cupboard, because those picks' development timeline will align more with the team's contention trajectory.
I'm not convinced that Koivunen or McGroarty will even be Penguins by the time the team gets their next series win.

Koivunen leads the AHL in rookie scoring and is Top 10 overall. McGroarty is getting rave reviews from the WBS coaching staff for his 200-foot play, and his production has drastically increased over the last month.

Hasn't the complaint been for years that the Pens don't give youngsters a chance? Hasn't the argument been that if given the choice, Sullivan will play older players in front of youth? Wouldn't acquiring a 29-year-old Vrana provide him with that opportunity to block Pens prospects?

If iceburgh is still with the team come Saturday I’m gonna lose my shit!!! We better have 0 players left by the TDL. Move the mailroom people! Jesus! No one better be left alive in Pittsburgh, Dubas, I swear!!!!!
Tux is ready for the NHL and who cares if he can't fire a t-shirt canon? We can always try and sign Gritty as a UFA in July.

Something to note with LA is that they're currently running with 12 F and 8 D and are sitting at $4.3 million in cap space. They can stay cap compliant with sending a $800k or greater player to the Penguins in the deal, and that player would most likely have to be a defenseman rather than a forward.

Another thing to consider is that if LA doesn't want to trade Clarke, the Penguins could instead bring back Spence and look to use him as a trade chip. Friedman has mentioned multiple times that the Penguins like Buffalo's young players in their AHL team and I think Spence would fill a need for Buffalo. You could do a 3-way trade where it's something like:

-Penguins get Greentree, Rosen and a 2025 2nd from LA
-Buffalo gets Spence
-LA gets Rakell

So basically Rakell to LA for Spence, Greentree and a 2nd followed by Spence to Buffalo for Rosen.
