Salary Cap: '24-'25 Salary Thread: Crosbicles Volume MMXXVI: Sid is Still Goat

I still think somebody like San Jose or Chicago throws a Brinks truck at Marner, or he sticks around in Toronto.

I think it'd be a mistake to try and outbid teams in an attempt to lure him here, and it'd be a mistake on his part to sign with the Pens to be brutally honest.

Maybe with a new coach, but I dunno.

Yeah.....was thinking that but couldn't remember what was going off the books, and the increase in the cap.

That's good then...no reason for Dubas to not go for it .
Glass, Tomasino and POJ are RFA. Neito, Beauvillier, Grzelcyk, and Shea are UFA.

There are players in WBS that can replace the UFA's today, so there is really no need to dip into the extra cap space other than trying to land a big UFA.

Toronto definitely has the money to keep Marner because Tavares' contract is expiring. It's just a question of whether Toronto wants to double down on keeping the core together and whether Marner wants a new opportunity. If he leaves Toronto it won't be because of money IMO.

The Penguins could throw him a $15 million contract and be totally fine with the cap.

Pens are in the get younger and redo the roster. Marner is a luxury and his AAV at say 12 to 14 million is problematic. But Dubas can move Karlsson while he has value and with retention Karlsson is very attractive. Pens cap would be over 30 mill and moving Rust adds another 5. Karlsson retention is 2.5 million and Pens add 7.5 to cap space. Pens have Jarry but he is probably moveable after next year. Pens will need some retention but not as much with cap going up next 3 years. I don't move Rakell unless Dubas is just offered a great deal.

My PuckPedia PuckGM has the totally realistic scenario below with about $900k in cap space:

Malkin - Crosby - Rust
Raantanen - Vilardi - Marner
Hallander - Blake - Heinen
Ponomarev - Lizotte - Glass
Tomasino / Acciari

Kolyachonok - Ekblad
POJ - Letang
Graves - Desharnais
Aho

Blomqvist
Larsson
I don’t think Vilardi is a C in the NHL.

Dubas and Armstrong sitting in the team Canada booth trading minor leaguers for no reason. Very on brand

Prob 24M of cap space plus another $5M if you bought out Graves and Jarry.

Rakell-Crosby-Marner ($14m)
Bunting-Malkin-Rust
Hayes-Lizotte-Tomasino ($2m)
X-Acciari-Heinen
X

X- EK
X-Letang
X-VD

$13M left for 7 players and you’d really need a top 4 D and starting goalie.

2nd line isn’t very good. Bottom 6 should be good but likely won’t be if Sullivan is the coach.

I’d still love to sign Marner but would continue rebuilding for another year at the very least. Not a roster that’s going anywhere.

Plus it seems the Jets have plenty of cap next season to keep rfa Vilardi or match any offers, no?

Without any additional moves, I think this team is probably sitting with this base for next year:

Rakell-Crosby-Rust
Bunting-Malkin-XXXX
Heinen-Glass-Tomasino
Lizotte-Ponomarev-Acciari
Hayes

XXXXX-Karlsson
POJ-Letang
Kolya-Desharnais
Graves

Nedjelkovic-Blomqvist

I think the only young guy "guaranteed" a spot for next year is Ponomarev, and that's largely driven by him becoming waiver eligible. I think McGroarty, Koivunen and Pickering all more likely start in WBS without a great camp.

With this, they'd need a top-6 winger who can kill penalties and a top-4 LD. The PKing thing matters because they only have 5 established PKing forwards between Glass, Rust, Lizotte, Acciari and Ponomarev, and Sullivan has been pretty consistent about wanting 6 PKing forwards in his lineup. I'm not saying "bring him in because of this" obviously but Marner would actually add a 6th PKing forward as well.

Personally I'd offer a dump truck of a deal to Marner and a short term and high AAV deal to Orlov. Use any remaining cap space to bring in short term cap dumps for picks.

Edit: oh wait forgot about Hallander as well. Push Ponomarev out and make the 4th line Hallander-Lizotte-Acciari.

I would be very surprised if he didn’t re-sign with the Jets. They’re a contending team and playing with Scheifele and Connor and PP1 is a pretty sweet gig.

My money would be pretty much all going towards Marner and Chychrun in the summer

Toronto has 32.0 to back the truck up to him.
Two things working against Marner here.

1. He will want at least $14MM per and I don't think the Leaves will give it to him so he makes more that Matthews. (even though he should cause he is the better of the two)
2. Toronto will probably resign Tavares, plus there are big raises due to Kneis and Robertson, while only having 7 forwards signed.

This is per Yohe on a local podcast but here's an interesting tidbit, I haven't seent his mentioned on here anywhere yet.

Apparently, if Sullivan decided he wanted the Devils job last summer it was his and the Penguins were not going to stand in his way of making that move. However, he chose to decline.

Outside of buying out Jarry, I don't think you need to do any of these to be able to afford signing Marner and Chychrun.
You don't. But then that eats most of your $23 million. Moving them opens spots/extra cap for a young player that Dubas might be targeting and some WBS yutes.

Not that I believe anything yohe says. But why would Sullivan want that pressure cooker with the NY/NJ media? He's treated like Egyptian royalty by the Pittsburgh Muppets.

This makes me hate him even more.
