Is it? I mean Glass and Hayes was effectively 9.5 mill between this year and next. And they were 10000% brought in for the picks. Thats literally only 1 mill more.

They've gotten use out of Glass and Hayes, though. $10 million in retained money is just dead money, there's not any value gained there.

I'll believe it when I see it because it's not really how most NHL teams operate. Most teams would retain less and get a less return over retaining max to get a max return.

Which I think is a silly thing to do. The Sharks have been garbage for years now. It hasn't done them much good to retain less on the EK deal. If they could have squeezed even more value out of the Pens by retaining more, they should have.

If the Pens can squeeze out better value by retaining more in an EK trade, why not? It's not going to hold them back from being a cup contender because they have zero window to win in the three years remaining on EK's deal.

I’m not saying they shouldn’t, I explicitly said they should. I just said I’m skeptical they do it.

It's more about the owner's bottom line than what's actually good for the team.

Main board thinks EK is garbage. Doesn’t he have like a 67% GF%? Possession metrics are good. Point totals aren’t what they once were but still 12th in the league for a D.

Seems like if you did a blind “taste test” he would be heavily sought out. With retention of course.

The main board hates Karlsson because he's the "can't play defense OFD" meme personified. Issue is that player still has value, the people on the main board just don't think so. I do think the part about Karlsson not bringing back a great return are more likely true than not, though. It's just people on the main boards take it to asinine levels.

I think they'll have to retain him down to around $5-$6 million, take back a cap dump or two and will likely only get about the value of a late 1st or 2 2nds back for him. I still think that Karlsson at $6 million to Dallas with Dumba as the cap dump is the best bet

San Jose got more value only retaining $1.1 million and taking back 2 to 3 cap dumps. Maybe they saw value in Granlund who knows.

And if you move Karlsson for good entry level players, you will get use out of them too. Good young players are literal the best return for your buck asset you can have. If you make your team better than its not dead money. If you can buy 2 young cost controlled pieces then you can actually make money. It's not so binary. Minnesota has millions in dead cap still yet their team got way better and I am sure they are raking in more because of it.

Yeah but Karlsson was coming off a 100 point season, which he's not even close to producing at right now. They sold high on him, the Penguins wouldn't have that luxury.

San Jose traded Burns at $5.25 million to Carolina for Lorentz, Makiniemi and a 3rd back in 2022 when Burns had 3 years left on his deal. The Penguins taking on a cap dump would improve the return, but I think that general level of return is most realistic. I think it's possible to stretch that to a 1st with retention and taking back money, but it's a tough bet.

I think the best case scenario is they get a single late 1st with cap dumps for Karlsson at $5-$6 million. I can't see any way he brings back better than that.

EK's probably gotta be an off-season move so teams know exactly how their cap situation's gonna shake out and how much the Pens will have to retain to move him.

Hoglander is a guy I forgot about and really regret being reminded of

Fully over any idea of bringing him in.

I was done with it the minute I heard it lol

I mean yeah this team is desperate for top six ability but I'd rather play Toma rather than trade for a guy that likely does about the same thing.

Chris Johnston had a few comments on the Pens on insider trading. Nothing earth shattering, but doesn't sound like retention on a trade is likely.

LeBrun added that the Pens will absolutely sell, but the idea that it's going to be a firesale at the deadline is a misnomer - simply because the Pens don't have a lot to offer.

Dubas will make every effort to make trades to acquire young players, prospects, and draft picks (and LeBrun says it's in that specific order), but there might be a more flexible market in the offseason for guys with term.

Would be cool if we had this guy to sell.

#dubas’ Jared McCann.
