Yeah the normal thing to do is that we're out of the playoffs by the deadline and we clear some roster spots. A couple guys come up after the deadline and play for the rest of the year and solidify a spot. Funnily enough we did that in 2016 too...

Imagine getting the amount of rope Rust got. He wasn't even productive in the AHL.

15-16 is how you run a team. Players were played based on accountability.

Which happens. At 850k for 2 years, it's a minor gamble

The thing is it should be a minor gamble. The problem is it isn't on this team. If players were held accountable there wouldn't be a problem.

Neito won't be waived or benched. ZAR wasn't going to be waived or bench. Same with Simon. Since the cups Sullivan holds not players accountable. So if you bring in a guy he likes they are staple to the team. The move goes from a gamble to a problem very quickly.

And history keeps repeating with guys like Harkins, Neito, Accari, etc.

Since Rutherford left no GM has the guts to stand up to Sullivan.

I am starting to think Rutherford held players accountable more than Sullivan during those teams at this point. Since he left it has just been give Sullivan as many pets as he wants.

I don't know if it was accountability so much as Rutherford had the itchiest trigger finger in the NHL. So if someone pissed him off or if he got bored, he made a trade. The guy is literally nicknamed "Trader Jim." It can be argued that he probably should have been more patient at times, such as the second Hagelin trade that just pissed off the room and he reportedly tried to undo months later.

Beyond that - and this is not an excuse - I think the coaching staff has gotten used to the idea that there isn't much help in WBS. Because there wasn't the past few years. That's changing, and I think Dubas is going to have to clear the way for those players when they're ready.

This is such bullshit.

"there wasn't much help in WBS" as we iced Chad Ruhwedel for 150 games over three seasons and he has played 10 games since leaving here.

"there wasn't much help in WBS" as we played Jansen Harkins for 45 and he's played 30 on the f***ing Ducks.

honestly the dumbest f***ing narrative i've ever heard is "there wasn't much help in WBS".

this team hasn't developed a drafted forward since 2015 that has played more than 100 games and that was f***ing Dominik Simon.

Hey man no way a player like Gruden could put up 0 goals and 45 games.

Edit: o wait he actually did manage 10 score a goal in 13 games Lol

But looking back, it's tough to say at the time of FA "we shouldn't sign Nieto now because in two years, so and so will be ready". Same with Acciari, same with Neds. Same with Jarry, I guess too.
I don't necessarily have a problem with signing Nieto, especially given his cap. Acciari is a little bit tougher to swallow because of the cap, but I can understand it.

The problem is their ironclad spot in the lineup night in and night out. OK, you signed them, but they suck. Try someone else. At least rotate them in and out.

Man, Sullivan keeps insisting on neutering his team by forcing Tangradi, I mean Glass, in the top six…welcome back Geno! lol…well, at least Nieto is out…

This is the better argument and I agree. I've agreed with this all year.

The argument shouldn't be "we shouldn't have signed Nieto because two years later we would have a guy like Poulin or Pono". The argument should be "okay, Nieto isn't working out as well as we'd hoped. Let's get Poulin and Pono rotated up here and if they do well, we can trade or waive Nieto."

I think we'd all agree that level of roster management by Dubas and Sullivan would be the much-preferred route.

As an aside, I still think we are trying to find working line combos. Raks-Sid-Rust are fine but that's about all we have. Some other combos look okay but it's not consistently manifesting into much. It would be nice if we could get a couple guys more set in stone and give them legit time to mesh together. L1 and L4 have gotten it, L2 and L3 have been blenders. Injuries necessitate that but once Geno and Tomasino are back, the blender will start again. Worse, I don't see any real combos that should force Sullivan's hand. I imagine we go back to Bunt-Geno-Glass. Then that leaves the 3rd line to figure out.
