Once again wish we would've targeted John Gibson over signing Tristan Jarry.

I've said all along that in a vacuum Gibson is better than Jarry.

But the rumor was the Ducks were asking for too much to offload Gibson.
So it wasn't "Jarry or Gibson"

It was "Jarry or Gibson and assets going the other way"
So they wisely didn't pursue this.

The idiotic thing was signing Jarry. They could have run Ned and any other FA goalie and gotten same/better results without an albatross of a contract

Dubas has a huge blindspot: he cannot compute goalie value. He's f***ed up multiple times on this front in Toronto and has repeated the same errors here

Marner is almost 28, he's never won anything, this core is cooked, and realistically, anything competitive the Pens could put together is like six years away. What would his motivation be to sign here?
these boards aren't real. just let go of the ego and embrace the id

He could get money in other markets, too, that are possibly more competitive.

The Penguins can likely offer more money than a lot of other more competitive teams, though.

Why Marner would pick the Penguins would basically come entirely down to money, and possibly wanting a smaller spotlight franchise. It's very similar to why Gaudreau left Calgary to sign in Columbus, although there was a family factor there as well.

Ideally you're aiming to pick 1st and to do that you need to finish last for best lotto odds, but yeah. I dunno. Makes zero sense to me to chase Marner just to have him rot here. Hell, weaponizing that ~$14M in cap space by taking on bad players for 1st round picks/prospects makes more sense for a team like the Pens.

I'd 10000000000000000% rather sign Marner for $14 million a year than get like 3 2nds to take on 3 $4 million cap dumps a year. And that's assuming you'll even get that much as the cap goes up more and more, Marner's $14 million in 2030 is going to be like $8 million today.

He's also from the GTA and Pittsburgh is just a couple hours away.

This Marner stuff is literally just "I'm bored of watching this turd circle the drain since 2019 and I'm dreading watching a rebuilding team until 2032."

If he wants to chase money, he'll have a number of places to pick from, and I'd imagine several are better options than a dead end franchise in a locale like Pittsburgh. If he wants to compete in his prime, Pittsburgh makes zero sense. If he wants to pick a place with a buncha cash and a core in place to try and compete while he has gas left in the tank, there's Bedard in Chicago and Celebrini/Smith/Dickinson in San Jose. Teams like Dallas and Minny are within potential striking distance and they have the youth to be competitive long term.

Him getting that asininely dumb contract from Chicago is actually what I'm betting on happening.

I've long been convinced that Marner is going to be targeted by Dubas if he makes it to free agency.

Dubas can pitch Marner an elite role without the white hot spotlight of Toronto media. He doesn't have to be the main leader with Crosby, Malkin, and Letang around.

The Pens will have the cap space to be players in free agency if they want to. They'll have even more if they move Karlsson, Pettersson, and perhaps others, and then promote a few forward prospects.

The pipe dream is that Marner and Chychrun both make it to free agency, the Pens clear additional cap, and add both of them. That would speed up the rebuild.

If this team could somehow fire Sullivan and manage to land EP40 and Marner in the next 8 months

The Canucks want a center coming back in whatever EP40/JT Miller trade goes down, apparently. That kinda kills things before they can start as far as the Pens go, sadly.

Poulin is a first round pick and center. Seems like a perfect fit to me. We can throw in a top 4 pick in JP along with petterson.

I mean a top 4 dmen and the equivalent of 2 1st round picks. It would be crazy for JR to say no.
