So there’s never been a bad captain then? By nature of being named a captain they are automatically a good captain and a good leader?

Joe Thornton was not while he was here. Then again, winning something doesn't mean a guy is a good or bad captain. Some teams just suck but they can still have good leaders- a great captain cannot make a crappy team a winner if the basic abilities aren't there. Marchand did not elevate the team this year, for example, though he gave his best.

You inferred earlier that one couldn’t be a good captain without “winning” something.

I’ll submit that you have a better chance at finding a good captain who never won a cup, than you do of finding a bad captain in the NHL.

All that said, I don't think Tavares is the way the Bruins need to go. He's going to probably cost a good bit, want more term than we'd like to give, and will be 35 before next season starts. He would be the best center on the team by a good ways, if he doesn't go off the age cliff, but still, no thanks.

The Bruins have cap space, and the market is AWFUL.

If Tavares is willing to come here, then you have to consider it . If I have money and there is a choice of giving tavares 4 years or brock Boeser 7 , I'll absolutely take Tavares, despite the age gap, probably same with Ehlers

Honestly if the choice is Marchand and Tavares, as much as I love Brad, I'll take Tavares, especially if Brad is looking for similar term

Tavares on a short 3 year deal, if you could get him around $8m or so, I would do that.

With a little luck not losing ground in the lottery, we should solve our future center issue. I said in a GDT the other day that we have three centers that can put up 50 points and be responsible defensively.
I personally think we need another high end winger and another solid top six winger, like Geekie. We already have loads of guys to fill out the bottom six. Although I wouldn’t mind them adding Jeannot to the fourth line if he’s not too expensive.
Defense and goaltending will hopefully solve itself with good health and full training camps.

If a top center cannot be gotten over the summer, then I agree- I've thought for a while, think I said it here some time back- that a top play-driving wing, like a Panarin type, would be an okay thing to do as well. Bruins would have two lines with drivers, adequate centers, but may also need a good shooter for the top 6 to go with Geekie.

I’m definitely not pushing for it to happen as a priority, but I think there could be a path where it makes sense, depending on who else they acquire and what his demands are.

IMO, if there’s even a hint that Marner would be interested in coming here, they need to be serious in their pursuit of him.

That could be a franchise altering move.

We did have Marchand and Pasta both hitting PPG for a few years and Bergeron joining them when the Perfection LIne was at it's height.

Always hated the "this guys not a winner" thing. You have a guy like Jerome Iginla, who by all accounts fits the bill of playoff warrior/plays the game the right way, great locker room guy, and he never won despite having a long career.

A lot of it comes down to just being with the right group of guys at the right time.

Sure some guys are like that. And then there’s guys like John Tavares.

He never mentioned Geekie, and I’m just talking about them on the market in general, not for us per se…

Geekie I think gets 5.5, but would prefer more 5.15 while trying not to be cheap as best I can. I think Arb would bring him down if that was in the cards.

He turned down 8, I forgot about that. I don’t know when that offer was made though, and if he actually gets that in the end tbh. I think part of that was wanting to leave Vancouver, he obviously came back to career average this year. But who knows, Im just thinking more of a halfway point between fair and realism on that one?

This is McAvoy and Pasta's team now and they already have a handful of guys that have worn letters for other teams (the Lindholms + Zadorov) that can help them in leadership roles. I'd rather just trust those guys to step up and take on the roles that we need them to and not sign 35 year olds to contracts they have almost no chance of living up to just to add more leadership.

(and I don't think Tavares in the guy to add if that is what you want but that's besides the point)

I think there's a difference between "never won" and "never had playoff success."

Bourque made two Finals in Boston and some ECFs.

No one thinks Charles Barkley wasn't a "winner," but they sure as shit don't think Joel Embiid is.

Bruins officially finish last in the division after the original "re-tool" season and then they spent a load of money this summer. Colossal failure Should be a lot of open jobs during camp in September.
