And they should be. Not sure how they could move Zacha and improve, he's a solid two way player. Probably the best passing forward on the team.

He made some brilliant passes this season

Strong two-way player as well. Gets along and plays well with Boston's franchise forward. I think he's actually a bit of a bargain at his current number. I'm not saying he's untouchable but I'd have to think long and hard before dealing him.

Oh I can imagine it......

All great GMs are gonna miss on a move every once in a while. And to be honest, that's what you want.

It means they're being aggressive in trying to improve their team. I'd rather have a GM make an aggressive move and miss from time to time, than play it safe and wallow in mediocrity. As long as the hits exceed the misses, and you take action to correct the misses when they do happen (Like Tampa did with Jeannot). I'm good.
I mean the Tampa GM was coming off 3 straight SC appearances including two wins so I am sure he has some cache built up. Sweeney doesn't really come close to him IMO.

Jets Interested In Physical Bruins Defenseman

According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the Winnipeg Jets are interested in Boston Bruins defenseman Brandon Carlo.

The 28-year-old has been with the Bruins organization since they drafted him in the second round (37th overall) in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. He's gone on to play 615 games with the Bruins, scoring 29 goals and 109 points.

This year he's played in 61 of the Bruins' 62 games, scoring a goal and nine points.

The Bruins' season hasn't gone well. Throughout the last few years, they've watched key veterans like Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci retire, and old age is starting to catch up to some others. Without many top prospects, the Bruins must find creative ways of gaining draft capital and bringing in young players. One way to do this is by trading a known defenseman.

The market hasn't been set for Carlo just yet, but other Canadian teams have reportedly shown interest in Carlo. The Calgary Flames and the Edmonton Oilers are looking to bolster their blue line and are hoping to do so by adding the 6'5, 220 lbs American defenseman.

Adding Carlo to the Jets' blue line would provide them with another big defender, capable of clearing the front of their net.

I spit my drink out.

"Physical"
"capable of clearing the front of their net."

Has this guy watched a Bruins game this year?

Neither, There are plenty of college UFA's coming out again this year, what do you think the chances are the Bruins will deal someone a first for them?
You can't trade for an undrafted UFA. That's what Merkulov was.

There is a difference between an undrafted UFA who dominates college as a freshman and gets signed by an NHL team, and a player who's stayed in college so long his rights are about to expire. Most of the former stayed in college because they weren't ready or NHL caliber. And honestly, most of the latter are future bottom 6 and AHL'ers.

Am I imaging him evaluating too long on their most tradeable assets this season?

I really have no idea. I am finding it hard to be too rough on Sweeney right now with the team for so long being on the bubble. I think it's become pretty clear that the playoffs are long shot now, but while many of us thought that a month ago, it wasn't really the case from a GM perspective. I also don't want him getting rid of tradeable assets for less than their worth for the sake of making a deal. Maybe there is a deadline move or two to come, but it may well be the off-season where things get done.

I'll be first in line with the torch and pitchfork if the decision is made to keep the same team intact and run it back again with minor tweaks.

Marchand week to week. Has any gm in the history of the game bungled his two most tradeable assets in a down season? You can't work two days a week I guess.
It's still too early to say if Marchand is getting traded, but maybe a wild opinion, I think Zacha, Carlo, and even Geekie would return more in a trade especially if the Bruins would try to do Marchand a solid by moving him to a team he would want to go to.

Well considering the extra first round pick has about a 75% chance to top out being what Merkulov is today, he was.

Plus, as a forward Merkulov essentially is a first round Sweeney pick!

Overhyped by the same group of posters who overhype every prospect, never going to contribute to a winner, unable to score points in the NHL, and you couldn't trade him for a 5th.

The guy was 21 years old. also are you considered dominant as a college player when you score less than a PPG?

Bruins Mock Trades: Grading Deals For Marchand & More

The Boston Bruins are at the center of trade discussions as they hold several of the most highly sought-after players on the market, and everyone is waiting to see what moves Bruins general manager Don Sweeney will make ahead of Friday’s trade deadline.

In the meantime, many of you have come up with your own ideas for Bruins trades and asked for my thoughts. You ask, you shall receive.

Brad Marchand to Washington for the rights to Cole Hutson and a third-round pick in 2025 – @B_Caplette

This is an intriguing trade, but I think Washington ultimately says no.

While the Capitals are leading the Eastern Conference and are in the race for the President’s Trophy, I don’t think they’d want to give up a prospect they just drafted this past summer and who projects to be a part of their long-term future for an aging veteran with an injury history who may not even re-sign with them after this season.

Also, part of what has made the Caps so good this year is the chemistry of their lineup. Every player has a role and plays it well. While Brad Marchand would be a clear upgrade, adding him completely throws off that balance. I see Washington making smaller moves for role players rather than blockbuster deals for bonafide stars.

I will say, though, a line of Marchand, Tom Wilson, and Pierre-Luc Dubois would be the most hated line in the history of hockey, and I’d love to see it.

Brad Marchand to Dallas for Logan Stankoven and a first-round pick – @TJ_TMorrison23

This is a little too steep of a price for Marchand. Maybe you get Stankoven or a first-round pick, but certainly not both. The more likely deal is one of the two and a mid-round pick.

Brad Marchand to Colorado for Calum Ritchie and a second-pick (Bruins retain $2 million of Marchand’s salary) – @kram93291

Of the three Marchand proposals, this one seems the most realistic in my eyes.

The Avs aren’t the goal-scoring machine they once were and are trying to compensate by getting stronger defensively. Adding an all-situations, high-IQ forward like Marchand is the perfect fit.

Colorado may also be one of the few destinations Marchand would waive his no-movement clause for considering his relationship with Nathan MacKinnon.

Trent Frederic to St. Louis for a second-round pick – @Devilish21ca

Before Trent Frederic suffered his injury, this would’ve been a slam-dunk trade for both sides. But now that he’s on the shelf for at least the next couple of weeks, the best return the Bruins can hope for is a fifth-round pick.

If anything, St. Louis probably won’t trade for Frederic at the deadline at all.

The Blues are probably at, or near the very top, of his list of teams he’d want to sign with in free agency, so it makes little sense for them to give up assets for him now when they can add him for free in the summer.

Trent Frederic and Morgan Geekie to Los Angeles for Brandt Clarke, Alex Turcotte, and a first-round pick –

We’ll pretend Frederic is healthy for this, and even then, LA doesn’t accept this deal.

The Kings already gave up a ransom for Tanner Jeannot, so I doubt they’d want to do the same for Frederic, even if Morgan Geekie is involved.

And as well as Geekie has played, the Kings are in the hunt for a proven first-line forward, not so much one that, for now, is only having a hot season.

Morgan Geekie, Georgii Merkulov, and fifth-round pick to Buffalo for Alex Tuch – @danbaraiuk4

I don’t see the Bruins making this trade.

Geekie and Tuch are close in age and have similar play styles and contract situations. Swapping one for the other doesn’t make a ton of sense, and trading away Merkulov and a draft pick doesn’t either.

I’d try to see if Buffalo would take Merkulov and a higher pick for Tuch.

With both him and Geekie on the roster, the Bruins would go from having some of the weakest forward depth in the league to a very strong middle-six.

Brandon Carlo, a first-round pick, and John Farinacci to Buffalo for Dylan Cozens and a third-round pick – @JustinADiMaio

This is a solid place to begin trade negotiations, but the Bruins will have to throw in another piece or two to acquire Dylan Cozens.

That said, the Sabres are one of the worst defensive teams in the NHL, and a player like Brandon Carlo is exactly what they need. And while Cozens is having a down season, he still projects as a high-end, top-six center at only 24 years old and could be the long-term answer to the Bruins’ issues down the middle of the ice.

David Pastrnak and draft picks to Ottawa for Brady Tkachuk – @AngryBruinsBear

This would be the mother of all blockbusters, which is why it will never happen.

I understand the allure of a player like Brady Tkachuk. His style of play screams Boston Bruins, but I think we’re forgetting here just how good David Pastrnak is.

Since the beginning of January, his 38 points in 23 games are the best of any player in the league. There’s a legitimate argument to be made that he should win the Hart Trophy this season.

If anything, it should be the Senators sending multiple draft picks to the Bruins in this trade.

Yes he was and did. I wasn't ripping on him for Jeannot, though that was a horrid deal, but sort of kind of defending Sweeney from his worst unreasonable critics. If we were a Tampa Bay board, you'd have several people going to great lengths to point out that Brisebois really only rode Yzerman's coattails to those SC appearances with an inherited team. Maybe they have those guys on their board, too.

Ok, now move a player of actual impact, or preferably several. Marchand/McAvoy/Swayman should all go.

And so it begins.

Trade 1: Boston Bruins trade Trent Frederic (50% salary retained) to New Jersey Devils in exchange for unsigned draft choice Petr Hauser.

Trade 2: New Jersey trades Trent Frederic (50% salary retained) to Edmonton in exchange for unsigned draft choice Shane Lachance.

Trade 3: Boston trades Max Jones and unsigned draft choice Petr Hauser to Edmonton in exchange for Max Wanner, St. Louis' second-round pick in 2025 (owned by Edmonton) and Edmonton's own fourth-round selection in 2026.
