I have seen this ride your horses to death philosophy for basically 40 of my 50 years as a fan,. That is not the way to build. You keep Pasta because he is a borderline generational player, but you don't ride him to death or assume he should carry other players. The beauty of Pasta is that he's so good you don't need to completely overhaul the entire team/supporting cast to get back into the playoffs. Adding a couple of pieces of real talent (like a Rantanen, Marner, etc.) using the ample upcoming cap space can have the Bruins back in the playoffs quickly - next year, even. Trading Pasta will ensure a long playoff drought.
Ah okay I see. I don't see this team missing the next 3 years in the playoffs (unless they trade Pasta), which is why my stance is we are better off trying to retool around him rather than hoping to find a superstar to replace him in the future. I get why you brought up trading him in the first place, it certainly isn't crazy, just don't think I can get on board with it though.Depreciating in the sense that, as @LouJersey points out, if you’re looking at a 3 year playoff absence (for example) then his depreciation is a function of the overall team vs him as an individual contributor
Why? If you were one of the best teams in the league why would you want to trade away an elite player before the playoffs? Is Carolina not trying to win the cup.If I'm Carolina and I'm moving Rantanen, I'd look to a team like Boston, won't face them in the playoffs and get 2-3 pieces in exchange.
Carlo + Coyle + Lysell for a signed Rantenan?
Being able to toss out Pasta then Rantenan as your 1A/1B RW combo for the next 5 years is enticing.
I think he tests free agencyMarner not coming here - he’s already said he wants to be a Leafs for life
I agree, that's what we're doing right now as he's a league leader in points dragging this corpse of a team behind him. He needs help for sure.I have seen this ride your horses to death philosophy for basically 40 of my 50 years as a fan,. That is not the way to build. Let's say we are in a world where we miss the playoffs the next 3 years with or without Pasta. Wouldn't you rather do it with him so that you not only have a lottery pick, but you still have your elite winger to build around? I'm just having troubles seeing how in the short, medium and long-term it would be in our best interest to move on.Yeah I agree. Would have to be a great deal of course and let’s not pretend better players haven’t been dealt before. It all comes down to the Bruins can miss the playoffs without him as well so depending on the teams direction it has to be considered if someone bowls you over.
Boston isn't at the absolute top of the list, but it's above average for sure. The taxes compared to other regions are average as well, saying they're so high as to be a major deterrent is fake news.

There was also a $10,000 limitation placed on the state and local tax deduction for federal income tax purposes back in 2017. It sunsets in 2025, but would be a major contributing factor for high-earners in choosing MA.Actually thats no longer true.
Massachusetts enacted a millionaire tax last year. Bringing STATE income tax alone to 11% for these guys. Its one of the highest in the nation and a factor.
Good point. I still think the chances of Marner being a Bruin is .000001%, but I could see a scenario where Toronto lets him walk.Might not be Marner's decision if the Leafs decide to walk away from him and give his money to Rantanen this summer.
If the Leafs don't have some playoff success, decent chance they decide to no longer just run it back with Matthews/Marner/Nylander as the big 3 up front.
Pagnotta saying Rantanen is open to a sign and trade
A factor? Sure. A major factor? Doubtful.Actually thats no longer true.

I'm REALLY hoping Toronto wins the Atlantic and gets the Rangers in Round 1 in that #2-7 matchup. I think the Rangers will give them fits.
A factor? Sure. A major factor? Doubtful.
Even with that Boston isn't at the top of the list of tax disadvantaged teams. The millionaire tax hasn't been prohibitive either in its limited existence - Sweeney snagged two of the top free agents just this off season when we finally had cap to spend.
If they could sign him Id be all for it though, but at a reasonable rate. I'd dangle Swayman out there as part of a package.,I don't know that Boston is that team though. He was playing with one of the NHL's best players in MacKinnon, but turned down $12.5 million a year. He goes to Carolina and his production falls off the table. Carolina though has some good talent there and is competitive year after year. I'm just not sure what Boston has to offer that would be attractive to Rantanen.....unless they're going to pay him the $14 million a year he reporetly wants.
Yeah, and all he had to do was give Elias Lindholm $55 million and Nikita Zadorov $30 million.A factor? Sure. A major factor? Doubtful.

Nope. I want the boatload of assets plus not having him gets me a BETTER pick. Again, I am not actively looking to deal him, but what happens if you get an offer of young franchise type C, young franchise type winger and a couple 1's? Would have to be an offer I couldn't refuse.Let's say we are in a world where we miss the playoffs the next 3 years with or without Pasta. Out of all of these better players who were moved, that you mention how many times does it actually benefit the team more in the long run? Like how successful were the Oilers after moving Gretz? I'm trying to think of a recent example of a superstar moving teams where the team moving them ended up in a better spot and I'm coming up with blanks.
Let's hope it is because they did so much todayI don't see the Bruins doing much if anything tomorrow, unfortunately.
If a good chance Sweeney will be gone if they don’t make the playoffs,do we really want him making to many deals.I don't see the Bruins doing much if anything tomorrow, unfortunately.
It's disingenuous/gaslighting to say those signings were bad at the timeYeah, and all he had to do was give Elias Lindholm $55 million and Nikita Zadorov $30 million.
No disadvantage at all, I tell ya.
