Flames have interest in Brandon Carlo before trade deadline: Report

Brandon Carlo has spent his entire NHL career with the Boston Bruins since making his debut in the 2016-17 season, but will that still be the case after Friday afternoon's trade deadline?

The Daily Faceoff's Anthony Di Marco reported Monday that the Calgary Flames have shown interest in Carlo.

The Flames are barely hanging on to the second wild card playoff berth in the Western Conference. Bolstering the blue line makes sense for Calgary if it chooses to buy at the trade deadline.

It's not known what the Flames would be willing to give up for Carlo. They have the 13th-best prospect pool in the league, according to the The Athletic's 2025 rankings. Calgary also has plenty of draft picks, including two first-rounders in both 2025 and 2026.

Carlo is signed for two more seasons at a team-friendly salary cap hit of $4.1 million. The 28-year-old defenseman has a 10-team no-trade clause in his contract for the 2024-25 season, per PuckPedia.

Carlo doesn't provide much offense -- just nine points (one goal, eight assists) in 61 games this season -- but he's a strong defensive defenseman with good size (6-foot-5, 220 pounds) who can play 20-plus minutes per game, block shots, defend the opponent's top forwards and kill penalties. Calgary ranks 27th in penalty killing with a 73.9 percent success rate.

Given his age, playoff experience and ability to play on the second pairing of a contending team, it wouldn't be surprising if Carlo draws interest on the trade market between now and Friday.

The Bruins are among the most interesting teams to watch at the trade deadline. They're only four points out of a wild card playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, but based on the way this team has played all season, it seems quite unlikely the B's would win a round if they did qualify for the postseason. Unlike recent seasons, this team absolutely does not have the look of a contender.

Selling would be the smartest path for the Bruins to take at the trade deadline, but with the playoffs still a realistic goal, it'll be interesting to see how many players Boston is willing to jettison before Friday.

I tend to agree with Dom on this one: there aren't really any showcases any more. With the size of NHL scouting departments, 2020s communication methods, video, etc, there is no player on any of the 31 other teams they don't know enough about to need to watch a call-up game in the NHL. If a team is interested in Merk, they know what he is and what he's done to this point.

Not aiming this at you specifically, but at the conversation in general.

Not gonna lie I do not know much about the likes of Michael Misa, Caleb Desnoyers, Anton Frondell, and Roger McQueen (all play center) but if the Bruins could draft one of these guys I think we'd all be happy.

I've read up on all these prospects and they seem to fit the bill for the Bruins moving forward. I'm probably missing some notable prospects but finishing off the season on a downer may have some serious upside.

The dream pick would be James Hagens if the Bruins can somehow scoop him we'd all be over the moon.

Those clamoring for a conservative approach to the trade deadline and bringing back many of the same players next season, see you again same time next year when the Bruins are sitting at 7th in the Atlantic.

Reminds me of the famous Mike Gorman interview where he lists all the Celtics players he wouldn’t part with then ended up being a collector of bench players and role players.

I really doubt Sweeney gets rid of his “assets” but if he does I don’t think the board will be happy with the returns. Remember sadly Sweeney can’t trade with himself!

Fredrick - 3rd rounder
Koepke and Brazzer( every team has one of them in the Ahl)
Marchy 1st and nhl player(think a guy on first contract who has not hit and needs “ a change of scenery”
Carlo ( 2nd and a A prospect)
Coyle ( 2nd and a B prospect)
Korpi. No one wants that contract.

I think we might see a conservative TDL approach for the guys that still have term. They can probably get better deals in the summer for a guy like Carlo, or Coyle, if they wait. The season is already lost in all but theory, so I don't know that the TDL is an end-all be-all for the club. Now if they roll out the same basic team next season, we have a problem, but we won't know that till the end of summer. And realistically, they aren't going to turn over half the roster. That just doesn't happen, and it's been made clear that they are not going for a full rebuild anyway, which is what that would mean.
 
I just want to see one move made to put the team in a better position going forward. Sure some guys are worth more when more teams can play ball but trade deadlines are also a time you can get more assets for less player because contenders want to bulk up to maximum capacity, we have been on the other side of this. Donny needs to be smart but doing nothing or only something stupid like Braz for a 4th is just more ineptitude and realistically not doing their job by management that can't afford those mistakes right now. We have players on expiring deals or close to that could make at least one contender a bit better, it's his job to find that deal/team.

Well he is hurt now, tougher to make a deal, as is Freddy, now again this falls on Sweeney, moves should have been made prior to or just after 4 nations, Why does Sweeney feel needs to wait until the last hour of the deadline. everybody has known for weeks what this team is and for weeks who they were moving pull, pull the trigger, it does not matter who and what we think should be moved or obtained, none of us will be complete satisfied, but do something. Sweeney does not make any moves come out in the next hour and say we are staying put until the offseason, Marchand, Freddy and whoever else walk, we will not be happy, but it would be a MO, of Donnie boy let players walk, and get nothing in return, and that has contributed to some of what is going on this season, along with horrible contracts. This guy is a mess, and I do not want to hear oh he has a successful GM, no he hasn't.

Someone might overpay big time this time of year in thinking they can win the Cup.

IMO if your looking for prospects and picks this week is it, but if your looking for a hockey trade it’s the off season. Not saying it couldn’t happen vice versa because it can. I just want something positive done moving forward and want to watch the draft this year with great anticipation.

This is probably the best time ever in the NHL to be a seller with so many teams in the hunt.If Sweeney cannot get good value now ,he never will is my bet.

The above statement is simplified as the Calgary draft picks have a lot of contingencies, but it does look like they will have some combination of their own pick plus NJD or Panthers 1st rounder. Sweeney should demand Calgary's 1st round pick in the very least. A RHD like Carlo goes for a package including a 1st round pick. Otherwise pound sand. Keep him.

I am Bruins GM & they want Carlo then Zary has to be coming back as part of it.

If you want to have some fun go look at the Wilds buyout scenario and you'll realize we aren't in bad shape. Even a team like Edmonton has a lot of dead cap
