Then they might as well go all in on the tank and deal everyone who carries their weight.

What is the point of carrying Pasta and McAvay if they don't intend to feel a competitive team for 3-5 seasons
They need guys that do more than carry their weight.

In this hypothetical situation of getting a 1st for Geekie my thought process of dealing mid roster guys would be to gain assets to trade for talent that can actually put them over the top, less about drafting guys cus it’ll take too long for them to pan out if at all.

Obviously there’s no guarantee anyone even becomes available that fits that description, but if they wanna actually retool quickly they’re gonna need to take some risks and get way more aggressive.

If not then they’re just gonna stay in that same spot they’re in now, good but not good enough until a hidden gem somehow falls on their lap in the draft.

Not a cup contender, but cap space to fill the holes in free agency, or assets (1st/ 2nd round picks) to trade for solid top 6 talent. Roster is younger and faster.
What I like about this roster is it gives Boston a legit shot at Gavin McKenna in 2026…

They need guys that do more than carry their weight.

I will disagree on this one if by weight we mean playing to the level their role and contract asks of them. The Bruins would be well into the playoffs right now if the following players carried their weight this season: Coyle, Zacha, Frederic, McAvoy, E. Lindholm, Swayman, Carlo. Your list can vary, of course.

I suspect those in favour of trade Geekie are doing so with the assumption that what we’ve seen since being placed on Pastrnak’s line this season… isn’t likely sustainable.

Would fear a multi-year contract at $4M-$5M and would prefer to “sell high” with the idea that he returns to being a 15ish goal player for the duration of his career.

Unfair?

Not unfair. But like just about any time we try to prognosticate the opposite could be true too.

Maybe he becomes a 20-25 goal guy or maybe he turns into a Toffoli type….some years in the teens, some in the 20’s and some in the 30’s.

Either way, even with the cap going up, I don’t want to see him above 4.25 or so for more than 3.

If Geekie returns a 1st + A-level NHL-ready prospect, I think the Bruins should do the deal. Even better if Geekie + Carlo can fetch you a 1st line forward younger than 30, but that may be more of an offseason deal.

I don't see the UTA deal making sense.

Frederic is hurt. UTA isn't making the playoffs. It's possible they get like 5 games from him and then he's a unrestricted free agent. There's just no value there, and certainly not one involving a 1st.

Meanwhile which of Durzi, Kesselring and Marino is Peake playing over?

The others seem more realistic.
Getting Casey and a 1st or Stankoven for Coyle is far less realistic than the Utah deal.

Yeah I meant they need guys with more elite talent, not just middle 6ers doing what they can out there. They need both but the ladder is easier to find.

Agree on your list though yes.

Evander Kanes full no protection clause vanished last night to partial and Oilers are trying to reach out to those teams to see if they can move him.He started skating feb 21 & if he comes back it will say bye bye to Oilers 5.1 million space .Its prob why they have not added another goalie etc yet.Would have put this in NHL thread but it's closed

Great deal for Chicago. Jones has been a depreciating asset. Knight and a 1st is a great return.
Jones is playing 25 mins a night on a really shitty team though so hard to gauge him.Watch him with a better team excel is my thinking.Still a great return for Hawks for sure but don't sell Jones short just yet until we see him with Florida lineup.Bet you this bothers Leafs GM .

Eh. Those aren't realistic returns, but it's realistic that NJ and DAL, 2 contenders, would add a rental and overpay for a 3C.

UTA trading for a guy who might never play a game for them just doens't make sense from the get go.

With B's LTIR, Kane + 1st for future considerations.

Could you possibly get smaller, and you want to add 2 third liners and a bottom 6 d-man, you got my juices flowing, I am so excited :sarcasm:

I have liked the returns for for Seth Jones, Nyquist, and Lindgren/Vesey. Reilly Smith is sitting in anticipation of a move.

Meanwhile a Bruins player is getting hurt every game. I sure hope Sweeney has a deal in the works because the trades are happening early this year. Carlo could be attractive to Vegas or Dallas and could at least fetch a 2nd IMO.

That's a tough call. You have to deal with him for 1 more year which means it would require at least a first.

on the other hand I see article where Edmonton thinks a contender might bite on him and they get assets back, so I doubt they have the same view of the situation you and i might

Honestly that is an AWFUL trade for the Bruins (Carlo for a late second) . He has 2 years left after this on a contract that is at worst fair value for what he brings, and could be argued is a legitimate bargain . I wouldn't consider trading Carlo unless I am receiving an asset I believe can play right away and has good term remaining

They’re so big and good right now.

This collection of players hasn't worked out, but that doesn't mean they were wrong on the idea that they needed to be bigger to compete in the postseason

As long as Neely is sitting in the Presidents suite, I don't expect you are going to see the Bruins return t smurfs
