Boston Bruins 24-25 Roster/Cap thread XVI

If you deal him you are probably getting a first and a prospect. The first will likely be a very late one at that. Still having two first opens up other opportunities like building you’re cupboard or potentially moving up, acquiring a player, etc.

Alternatively you keep your captain and re-sign him. You get an effective player who loves the organization and provides a good example for both younger guys and vets alike. I believe with some tweaking they can be right back to contention next year, or at the very least more competitive.

Personally I lean towards the latter. Having said that, logically speaking, the former may be what’s best for the overall health of the organization. No one really knows.

I will say this, the whole “trade and then sign on July 1st” thing is a fantasy. Anyone banking on that is setting themselves up to get hurt.

I can't count how many times I've seen fanbases talk about trading someone & then signing them back July 1st only for it to not happen. The only time I can think of where it actually worked out that way was for Antoine Vermette of all people.

I think that’s a totally fair argument until you get to this situation that we have…

A captain, who was part of the old core, won a cup, who makes it publicly known repeatedly that he wants to be here. However, that captain is also older already than 95% of players in nhl history, so we aren’t talking about someone who could have a a career somewhere else, just the end of a sunset. He also was part of the core that didn’t pull through when it mattered most in 2019 or 2023. Not saying it’s fault directly, but it didn’t work a second or third time with him. So we just squander future for…him not to play more meaningful hockey and order room service in Denver for the rest of the season?

If he says he thinks we can compete now, despite it being painfully obvious that this isn’t that type of year for many reasons, we’ll shit, imagine his optimism when he finds out what could be brought back in a TDL frenzy, while gets to have a chance at a 2nd cup somewhere for two months. He can still have his life and retirement and family in Boston. I’m sure his hunting trips are longer than the Leafs 2025 postseason, but maybe not quite as long as the Avs or Edmonton.

He’s a big boy. Get an under the table agreement to resign in the summer, and let him go to Oiler camp for April and May so he can come back to an even better roster next fall.

Skinner been letting everything in lately..You think they want Calvin Pickard behind him?Gibson rumor there but he is old and slow and injured now.Veleimeika or however it is spelled rumor to .Remember the Oilers are alot better then Boston as well but I do get Skinner played alot more.Anyhow never hurt to try .

Thoughts on Barzal?

He was playing hurt this year and is out for 3 weeks… but he had 80 points last year. He’s 27 years old and signed for 6 more years at $9.1m.

Speculation is the Isles are going full rebuild so he may be available.

I think Brad is putting on a brave face as the captain of the Boston Bruins.

I respect and like him, but honestly, I cannot see how he believes this.

Outside of a few games much earlier in the season when there was still hope among some, the Bruins beat some good clubs, Boston cannot skate with any of the very best.

That should be abundantly clear by now.

They can't even beat Anaheim and blow a lead against Toronto.

As noted, wake me when it's over.

He is also a competitive guy. And giving him a chance to compete with a buddy like MacK…things happen.
 
You guys that are anti moving Pasta - I ask this in the most sincere way - why?

If it's an emotional thing, I get it - he's one of the most positive energy guys we've ever had on this team, and is one of the best players in the world to boot. It's easy to fall in love with Pasta, we all have - or at least those with two brain cells to rub together.

But emotion can't drive business decisions 99% of the time. So where's the non-emotional logic?

If you:

a) aren't good enough to compete as constructed (they aren't)
b) if you don't have the resources in sufficient enough number to fix how you're constructed (they don't)
c) if you don't have a pipeline of talent knocking on the door of the big leagues (they don't)

Then what exactly is the point of retaining him? Seriously - I am not being a jackass when I ask this - why?

It's a waste of his career (admittedly a projection on my part - but I think a reasonable take) because teams can't win based on a single player - and hell, we don't even have a single LINE.

Moving him would sting, of course - but biting that bullet and moving guys like Pasta and Charlie would, theoretically anyway, REALLY accelerate the pace at which we get back to where we all wanna be - a perennial playoff entrant.

Explain to me, because outside of emotion I truly don't get it.

Because it’s not realistic. Like I think the fanbase would be more open to moving him if they knew he would be getting back a treasure trove of picks and prospects but we have a GM who can’t evaluate young talent. So naturally you could run into a situation where they have multiple draft picks in the first round and would miss on those or maybe identify prospects who would be better suited on the 3rd line or depth pieces but have a higher floor. Trading Pasta for a few 3rd liners would be horrific but that’s my fear of Sweeney getting back young talent because over a 10 year period we’ve seen that he cannot evaluate young talent.

I don't trust Sweeney or Neely to oversee a rebuild. I also don’t trust that Jacobs would allow one to happen. The fact they’re even talking about in a down season, signing Marchand to a deal shows that they have zero interest in rebuilding.

Think what would stop me is that if you do go full youth rebuild, you need some veterans around that can still play. As opposed to having vets around that are just warm body babysitters out there.

Kinda like Chicago right now.

Just a guess but to me young players would be more apt to listen if the message is coming from someone still useful.

That said, I’d trade anyone for the right price. Hell if I was a GM I wouldnt even know what my players looked like. Make it easier to scrap em when I’m no longer being amused by their play.

I dont move the pilars (Pasta, McAvoy, Swayman) because of a few different reasons.

Two big ones being the Buffalo Sabres and the Chicago Blackhawks. That should scare EVERYONE ****less to end up in the same rut the Sabres have been in.

Also, how often do you see a trade of a dollar for several shiny dimes EVER work out in this league? Especially for this organization. You almost NEVER see that value back for the dollar you traded away.

Im not moving Pasta. You build around him. Folks might not believe it here, but players DO want to play with Pasta and will come to Boston to do so.

Retool not Rebuild.

St. Louis went on an absolute tear. They started like 6-15 and were dominant from that point forward.

Lets look at that Kings team:
They ended with 100 points.
Their 3 centers were Kopitar, Carter and Richards. Pretty dynamite up the middle.
HOF goalie
Muzzin, Doughty, Voynov & Martinez as your top 4 d-man was pretty damn solid back then.

Do you think this team can do damage in the playoffs based on what we’ve seen? The Bruins 1 & 2 d-men are out, one likely done for the season.

This current Bruins team can barely string two straight wins together. There’s a difference.

Betting on a team to make the playoffs isn't the same as thinking they'll do some damage, as in go on a deep run.

But besides my point, just saying any team with an elite goalie can get hot at the right time and make run.

Frankly I don't believe in this team either, especially not enough to argue that they'll do some damage, especially after that showing last night in a crucial game.
 
As soon as Mike Sullivan gets fired/leaves Pittsburgh, he should be hired immediately in Boston.

Move pieces at the deadline to add some draft capital. Re-sign Marchand.

A re-tool and this team will be fine.
