Hmmm, with McAvoy out for “weeks” I wonder if they will try to pull a Vegas and add $9.5m in additional salary.

The Bruins could suddenly be the only buyer in the league that can take on a big contract without sending any money back.
OR be the team that takes on cap space for assets for other teams that are loading up (not sure if this is what you meant?)

I mentioned like a week ago looking at a team like Washington whom Sweeney has history in dealing with and taking a guy like Mangiapane, who last I checked was on their fourth line and not really working out, off their hands to free up cap space for them to load up.

It depends how long McAvoy is out for, but it doesn't seem like he's out for the rest of the season. If he was, I wouldn't expect the Bruins do be buyers (I don't see* them as buyers regardless), but they could be facilitators for other trades to accrue assets. They still have two buyouts right?
With the Bruins announcing that McAvoy has been diagnosed with an infection in his right shoulder as well as a significant injury to his AC joint, and that He remains in hospital for treatment with IV antibiotics. I hope they take extra caution and care with Charlie. and it may be best not to see him on the ice till next season.

If Mac goes on LTIR which I’m sure he will, the Bruins are going to have some cap flexibility to take on expiring contracts at the deadline for some picks/prospects.

For sure! They could add two or three Stempniak/Stafford types with the money and be set for a deep playoff run.

of course its some moron on the Canadiens that cheap shots mcavoy in a 4 team round robin
Bruins play them again but you know nothing will come from it .The old Bruins teams there would be blood..

He’s coming up after deadline deals

I want draft picks - I’ve already got 60 players down

McAvoy really ends it to me
I read he was out injured again... Back is he?

How do you pay for that?

And by pay, I mean what assets have you got to pay for it if it doesn't include roster players?
I’m suggesting we get on the friendly end of a deal like the Trouba trade.

Anaheim got him for basically nothing because they were willing to take on his whole contract without sending money back. That cap space gave the Rangers the flexibility to get JT Miller.

With Mac gone for the season our chances are pretty slim, and slim is out of town. I think it’s time to find out what we have in our system. We need to see Merk, Lysell, and Poitras start getting bigger minutes in the NHL.

So trading somebody like Koepke/Brazeau/Wothesrpoon + a 4th for a somewhat better (but not all that much) player who makes 7 or 8x as much?

I'm not sure what that does to be honest, and trying to look around at teams, it looks like a bunch of the teams at the cap have the LTIR benefit- EDM, WAS, COL.

A contending team isn't going to give up a particularly helpful piece if they are trying to win. I think it's more likely the B's could do some retention favors for teams and pick up a couple of draft picks.

(Not sure if they CAN use space created by LTIR space to retain... I'm thinking not, so it would have to be some creative thing).

Sell the ufa's for the best pick you can and bring up the kids to get experience and potentially fall in the standings to get a top pick. At draft day you package the picks you got to climb the draft if possible and walk into the free agency with cap space, some nhl experienced youngsters and maybe a few surprises by camp. Give it another go with a healthy/rejuvenated group that takes offseason training seriously.
