If you look at the Capitals as a model "retool" it didn't involve moving any core pieces.

Orlov and Hathaway for a 1st
Mantha, Eller, Malenstyn for 2nd round picks
Kuz and Edmundson for 3rd round picks

They went out and got Sandin, PLD, Mangiapane, Thompson, Chychrun. They literally traded their way out of it.

Signing Dylan Strome was obviously a huge one but they also resigned Tom Wilson in the middle of this as well

It would be the equivalent of moving out Carlo, Coyle, Brazeau and Wotherspoon for picks. Trading for Zegras (Strome-like), resigning Frederic (Wilson-like), developing Poitras (McMichael-like), signing Kovacevic (Matt Roy-like)

Nothing is apples to apples here but I'm just trying to show that it can easily be done without trading like McAvoy and Swayman as others suggest because "they'd bring the biggest return" a series of small strategic moves that reshuffle the country club we have here could do it as quickly as next year while keeping your 1st to hopefully find their Ryan Leonard

Chychurns been huge for the caps. I wish we got him.

Go over to the main board and suggest a trade Poitras for Zegras. Doubt you get
more than 30% of people agree with you. Zegras has broken 60 points twice. Poitras is in his D+3 season in which Zegras hit 60 points.
In their age 19 season they both played shortened seasons. Poitras scoring pace 37 points for 82 games. Zegras 44 points. Poitras TOI 13:24 mins/ Zegras 15:24. Poitras +4/ Zegras +6

You neglect to mention, Zegras in his two 60 point seasons, -21, -24. While averaging 18 mins TOI & 19 mins TOI.

THIS season, Poitras age 20, Zegras age 23:
Zegras: 5G 9A 14P in 30 games played. 82 game pace: 13G 24A 37P
Poitras: 1G 10A 11P in 24 games played. 82 game pace: 4G 34A 38P

Zegras this season 16:50 TOI. Poitras this season 12:57. 4 full mins less per game. 3 years younger. Zegras career 82 game average -16, Poitras 0.

Now we can discuss cap hits?

Absolutely nasty for them. Super underrated add.

They took some gambles and hit on a lot of them.

Sweeney isn't the best at drafting but he does make some shrewd trades (Coyle, Zacha, Kastelic to name a few). I think he needs a little rope to see if he can put a few more of those together.

Stop with the pace non sense. Zegras had a 60 point season D+3 while Poitras
spent a significant chunk of his playing in the AHL.

I challenge you to go on the main board trade section and try convincing people that Poitras is as good as as Zegras.

Sorry but weak comparison. Orlov and Hathaway don't compare at all to Carlo Brazeau or Wotherspoon.
IMO those two were core, or near core.
Carlo may be core but not close at all to Orlov.
Yes they retooled but they also grabbed a bunch of picks and made some astute signings and trades.
Not saying that the Bruins don't have the players that other teams would want but not at Orlov, Hathaway
levels IMO.

Who gives a fk about the main board. Zegras is not a good hockey player no matter what the main board says

Those two worked out real well in the playoffs! Not! They were both a waste of draft picks!

Poitras tries to get back defensively, but poor placement of turnovers, average speed and lack of experience work against him.

On the plus side, his passing decisions are getting much faster and much better. He has also knocked down a backchecker twice now. It led to Pasta's second goal. Kid is improving.
Yes

Probably another 200 games away but he will still be only 24

I like him in that third spot

- goal scoring winger mid 20's or so that can play now

- move out Coyle, Brazeau, Korpisalo and maybe even Carlo for draft picks, prospects. In a vacuum I like what each one of these players brings but I think these spots could use a different look for the team as these guys make the lineup too redundant. Korp has been good but I'd like the team to explore what they can get if a team gets desperate.

Geekie -- Zacha -- Pasta

Marchand -- Lindholm -- New Winger

Frederic -- Poitras -- Lysell

Kopeke -- Beecher -- Kastelic

Lindholm -- McAvoy

Zadorov -- Peeke

Lohrei -- Wotherspoon
Zegras on L2

Lol, so lets not get opinions from some some other hockey fans because they disagree with your opinion...ok.

Also, stop using pace, because Poitras is "on pace" to score 3G in a 82 Game season.

Yet he’s outscoring Zegras this season with Zegras being 3 years older. You can choose to ignore the numbers but they’re there. You also ignore the TOI factor.
