Boston Bruins 24-25 Roster/Cap thread XI

Not that Lou requires me to come to the defense of his post, but here I am anyway.

It was proposed that Geekie being in the top six was okay because the Panthers had Rodrigues. Yeah but… that’s a really great f***ing team. That’s the reigning Cup champs. That’s a team with a LOADED top six otherwise.

What Lou is saying is that the Panthers and Rodrigues is a real shit example of why it’s okay to have Geekie as your #1LW. They’re stacked. It has nothing to do with HOW they got there.

There are probably examples on other successful clubs where the sum is greater than the parts without having to go to the extreme of the Florida Panthers to try to prove the point. It’s a bad argument. That’s all.
It’s a great argument and I’m watching the GB - Eagles game with Joe and he agrees with me

If you asked the average Bruins fan how many points the Panthers finished ahead of the Bruins last year you might get 25 points - I believe it was 1 point

If you asked the average Bruins fan what the Panthers - Bruins series was last year they would say swept

The Panthers are not a great f***ing team

Just so there’s no confusion as to where I stand on the original debate:

To me the question isn’t whether the Bruins top six is strong enough to be successful with a “lesser” player like Geekie on it. It’s whether Geekie is actually a “lesser” player. Perhaps he’s been underestimated and blooming a little later than some. And MAYBE the pace he’s been on since being moved to the left has a chance of becoming his new normal. He hasn’t struck me as a passenger in this role… he’s been driving.

To me, that’s the better question.

Yeah, Lord it was an example of the type of forwards you need to carry Morgan Geekie as a top 6 forward, that's all. Bruins aren't winning shit with Geekie in their top 6 with their current crop. I used Florida only because the other poster brought up Rodrigues.

I mean Florida did trade for Tkachuk, Reinhart and Verhaege.... Barkov was a high pick and Florida wasn't stupid enough to deal him like the Bruins with Seguin and Sweeney hasn't pulled off a deal for a legit top 6 player in over a decade so here we are
Whoa…..this is war

Florida current GM traded for Tkachuk, Reinhart, Verhaege, Montour (key contributor at the time)...claimed Forsling........He inherited Barkov and some others...Sweeney inherited Bergeron, Krejci, Chara, Rask......and won shit.

Whoa…..this is war
Zito has destroyed Don in his time as GM, I think we both agree with that.

They made the last two cups and won last year. If they aren't great then what are our beloved?

The rest of the top six that Lou mentioned, the pedigree of much of their roster that you mentioned, a Cup Finals and Cup win in the last two years - are all evidence to the contrary. And it’s all stronger evidence than the Bruins going 2-4 against them in the playoffs.

You want to go into next season with the same forward group as they have right now minus Coyle and Wahlstrom but adding Poitras and Lysell?

The forward group needs a massive overhaul. Arguably the worst forward group in the league right now.

I don't want to- just, as I said, specualating about what it could look like what we currently have.

It's a lot asking a Poitras, yes, who still is a kid, to not only play 1st line, but handle 1C.

IMO, they'll eat him alive.

I appreciate the perspective and that could be right. I'd love the Bruins to acquire a #1 C, but with Lindholm under contract already and not likely to get moved, where does that leave Poitras? He's too talented for a third line grind role with third line players. Leave him in Providence for another season?

You agreed with you. Traitor
I hate Florida! They are just better for now. Bruins always run into better teams since I was a kid... Montreal....Islanders....Oilers....Penguins....Devils....Canadiens again....Tampa....Florida...Most of the time they have been the bridesmaid. Thank God for 2011 however.

I like Poitras a lot, he isn't ready to be a number 1 center, that needs to be the priority. Then a top 6 winger. Ideally you can sign one as a ufa and trade Coyle and Carlo for the other.
As above, what do the Bruins do with Poitras mean time? Third line C? It will be Freddy or Coyle there next season. 4th line? This is why this stuff is interesting to discuss.

This is the Way. But 2019 they were the better team and choked it away. I don't know if Chicago was clearly better in 13, but yeah, most of the last 50 years of fandom has been "almost, but not quite"

2019 will haunt us forever. Cup in building what a travesty.

Never thought the Bruins would have won vs Chicago until the series was being played. Really could have and probably should have won. 2019, ridiculous. 2020 I thought they were a shoo-in but Covid happened and Hedman got healthy and Rask bolted. 2023 ridiculous, one of the biggest choke jobs ever...not sure they beat Vegas but would have liked to see it.

I see my counselor every 3 months just to check in

I’m thinking this could be when she tells me to give up social media and message boards

Last time she recommended it was 10 months but I took up golf and learning to speak Spanish so I was very busy

IMO, you try the same plan we did with DK back in the day when we had Savard and Bergeron here.

Groom him slowly and once he's ready to move up, Elias would drop. Elias gets shit on a lot here, obviously because of his contract, but the guy still plays big minutes, can handle other teams top lines and wins face-offs.

Once Poitras can show me that for more than 15 games straight, I won't be able to change my mind.

This is not true 🤣.

Dan told me what he and Lou were discussing and I said the same thing Lou did (unknowingly). That “great” is a subjective term that changes from person to person, but when a team goes to a Final, loses, and then wins the Cup the next year, that team is really really good.

Hopefully points will come for Elias. Hes playing well on the D side of his game.

When I watch Geekie I see a very good player. Easy top 6 for Boston.

Yeah I’m all for Geekie when I have Barkov lundell tkachuk verhaege and Reinhart

The Bruins problem is that they have 2 first liners on the team. Florida has 4.

Right that’s the rub. Bruins needs at least one more clear cut 1st line talent. And then you hope the team D and goaltending can carry you. I do think that when Hampus is back and with Swayman back on his game, they are close to having the G, D and complimentary forwards (a little more speed/skill) to be a legit contender.

But god only knows how they find that missing elite first line talent.

Hard to imagine a #1 center coming in a trade a Poitras still wearing black and gold. Just think it’s a fake concern.

Bruins are trying to win a Cup making the perfect team so there upbeat cheerful kind and classy fan base can sleep well at night, while Florida for 7 years is sucking

if the Bruins were the Florida Panthers the last 15 years this place would have 1/3 the members
They didn't draft Reinhart, they traded for him... a late 1st and a 6th rd drafted prospect. Less than Sweeney dealt for a month of Rick Nash. It would be like counting Zacha on the B's as 6th overall, Hampus Lindholm as 6th overall and Elias Lindholm as 5th overall or like counting JVR last year as 2nd overall.

Don’t want to get into this DK v Lou pillow fight, but the only thing I’ll say is that if the Bruins really do suck for 10 years the way Florida did I don’t think we’d end up with fewer members here. Would probably be more like 10x, if you look around a little.

Ding ding ding. This is the name of the game. How do we find a 1st line level talent with the assets we have. Tough task ahead but it’s possible.

I do think we need to wait on making any sizable trades until Hampus is back. Get that defense in order and really evaluate.

Maybe I’m drastically undervaluing Zibanejad but if Canucks asked to include only Braden Schneider, that seams beatable no?
