24-25 Roster/Cap thread XI

But the Bruins were 109 point team last season without them, one point behind Cup champions Florida.

Aside from the down seasons of our star players, I'd say the biggest difference is in goal. No more Ullmark/Swayman happy happy joy joy confident hugging bros in goal.
Your power of mind control, just amazing! incredible!

Only way I’d move Marchand is if he asks to go to a contender, otherwise he’s retiring here
Mats Sundin didnt finish his career with the Leafs. Daniel Alfredsson didnt finish his career with the Sens. Bourque didnt finish with the Bruins. So many more. If this season keeps on as it is, you 100% move him rather than re-up. Only player I would have never moved on from from the cup team was Bergeron. And he retired as a Bruin, while the Bruins were on top.

Rd are not easy to come by. Most teams need another RD. That’s why the peeke trade was low key really good.

50 guys with speed who are second in the league in hits? He is an absolute nightmare on the forecheck.
Love that someone else said this about RHD. When I looked last year there were something like 78 RHD who played 20 games, which is a pretty low threshold. Plenty of teams need to play a LD on the right side just because of the scarcity.

The only way Boston and Vancouver hook up for a monster trade is if the transaction is money in - money out for both sides.

I have posted this before.

Carlo, Zacha, Frederic & Lysell covers all the needs plus some.
Combined salaries of the above is a bit under 500K less than Pettersson.
Lysell covers the prospect part. I would much rather keep both Poitras and Lohrei.

Vancouver tosses in a prospect.

I would sooner give them back Lindholm, but Zacha is 3 years younger and on a much friendlier contract. Taking the risk of Pettersson not fulfilling his value (much like Lindholm currently) puts more risk on our side - which should account for something at the trade bargaining table.

The Bourque situation is exactly what I’m talking about- the team wanted to do right by Ray so they sent him to a team that could win the cup. Thats the only way I see Brad being dealt (though he at least has a cup under his belt)

I honestly don’t see Vancouver trading ep40. It’s more likely they trade miller. But I doubt they trade miller because he is clearly their best player and an absolute force night in night out. Miller is a very passionate player who knows how to win.

Rebuild, in general, is a valid option, especially if we miss the playoffs. i.e., trade off some valuable pieces for high draft picks. But rebuilding through the draft is not a guaranteed path to success either. Drafting can be such a crapshoot. Bergeron and Krejci were 2nd and 3rd round picks who went on to be pillars of a successful franchise for years. Marchand, 3rd round.

Obviously if the consensus of the great hockey minds and scouts was that those three would be future pillars of a Cup-winning team and perennial contenders, they would have been ranked much higher. So, just pure luck?

On the other hand, we have a few former top-10 picks playing on the club currently, who have not exactly been carrying any franchises on their backs as one might expect:

E Lindholm, 5th overall. I mean, he's been good at times in his career, but spotty. Certainly not having the impact in Boston that his draft pedigree (and salary) would suggest.

Zaccha, 6th overall. H Lindholm, 6th overall - Again, both have had their moments, and have overall been good additions, but top-10-worthy?

Oliver "Where's Wahlly" Wahlstrom, 11th overall - Nuff said. Too soon? We'll see. Or we won't.

We also had #1 pick Taylor Hall. Good player, but has never been a franchise saviour.

So, should we trade pieces (McAvoy, Freddy, Marchand, etc) to get high draft picks for a rebuild? I suppose a better approach (is this stating the obvious?) is to target picks and prospects; try to get up-and-coming prospects for whom we have more data, use good ol' hockey sense to identify guys who have a good chance of developing into something special, and add a 1st round pick or two if possible. And then hope we get lucky.
