freddy's hit numbers dont really pass the eye test tho - a lot of flying by players with the puck. im not looking for sam bennet but you have to make a literal impact at some point if you are not being competitive with just your stick.
This. Hits is one of the most subjective and inconsistently tracked statistics in hockey. Of course, the counter argument to this is that nothing is more subjective than the eye test, which I can't deny. Still, I think it's a little disingenuous to equate Frederic's physicality with Kastelic's by pointing at a flawed and difficult-to-define statistic.
I actually agree with that. Frederic reminds me of Nick Ritchie at this point. A big guy, capable of physicality, but that seems to greatly prefer standing around waiting for the puck to come to him. It's just strange given how different his attitude was when he first came into the league. I understand he was trying to impress and keep a spot with the big club, but did potting some goals really change his view of himself that much? 99% of the time he looks not engaged and/or confused. It's very frustrating. Granted, Fred has given me that same "not sure how he has gotten all those points" vibe that Jimmy Hayes did in his first year here for many years now. Statistically, he's been an overachiever, and it's all but killed off the root of what got him here.

Maybe he's not the best example to criticize Montgomery, but there are plenty of others. As I was saying in the GDT, he's a coach who has been quoted as saying "I favor quality over quantity" in terms of shots. That philosophy seemed to be fully on display during the PP's against Philly last night. An all-out obsession with setting some guy up for an open net and forcing passes that are 100% not there, but that players WANT to be there. It's one thing to struggle to gain entry into the zone or to just be snakebitten on the PP. But it shouldn't be that difficult to change the guys to a shoot mindset when they're turning the pucker over incessantly despite extended zone time. Unfortunately, he's already expressed that's not what he believes so I have doubts he's doing anything of that sort.
You make some great points. While I think this team's issues ultimately boil down to a lack of talent (which is on Sweeney), I agree that Monty doesn't do himself any favors by continuing to preach a skill game to a group of guys who leave a lot to be desired in that department.

This was a discussion today I was having with an Oilers fan, believe it or not:

Are the Boston Bruins better with:

LW Zacha 27 Years Old
C Coyle 32 Years Old
RHD McAvoy 26 Years Old
G Korpisalo 30 Years Old
$22,500,000

OR

LW Huberdeau (25% retained) 31 Years Old
C Kadri 34 Years Old
RHD Andersson 28 Years Old
G Vladar 27 Years old
$20,875,000

Discussion went into:

1. the lengths of the two Flames forwards contracts.
2. the annual struggles of the Bruins two forwards in playoffs.
3. The play of the two RHD right now and last year.
4. The two goalie ages and contract length (Vladar upcoming UFA while Korpisalo has three more years after this)
5. The revenge factor: Kadri vs the Leafs and especially Huberdeau vs the Panthers
6. Vladar's history with Goalie Bob.
7. Which group of players is playing better hockey and would be a better fit to the Bruins.

It started by simply venting about the Bruins play this year, then transitioned to the Flames success and then asking which group had a better mix for the money and performance.

Currently all the individual Flames players have more points than all the Bruins players combined which was also surprising and the Oilers fan pointing out the Andersson goal celebration 'The Razzy Stare'

...and how that was such a 'Bruins thing to do'.

Most of this was on the idea that if any team was going to try and gut the Flames for assets it would be the Bruins.

I thought it was HF worthy of discussion of the various pros and cons of all the topics to pass the time in this rough first start to the season.

They should look at bringing back Taylor Hall if he's actually on the block. Proven chemistry with Pasta.

They'd have to return Coyle for cap reasons, and then add a small piece like Merkulov.

Certainly better than Max Jones.

If I’m dealing McAvoy he’s not going to be the best player in the trade

I'm attempting to trade Geekie, at this point, for anything. If we can't, I send him to providence and call up Lysell. Send a f***in message to the these guys that this type of play is not acceptable and no one is safe

I load up on the top 6:
Zacha-Poitras-Pasta
Marchy-Lindholm-Lysell

You need to put talent with talent and hope they start to mesh. Zacha/Marchy can flip flop depending what works.

Bottom 6 is easy- especially the 4th line which has been the only bright spot and Monty keeps f***ing with it

Wasn’t there a stretch last year where Geekie actually played well ? Middle of the season or a little later? I remember him catching fire for a little while. I believe he was playing with Frederic. He’s not playing well and does deserve to sit but I’m not sure Montgomery is utilizing him well this year.

It's (American) Thanksgiving, and the Bruins are sitting on the outside looking in.

What is your plan of action, my loves?
As a season ticket holder I would still like to watch a contending team BUT if I'm being realistic I would be all for some major changes to the roster.

I would leave Monty behind the bench and start fresh next season with a new coach and possible a high end pick.

Still hold out hope that they turn this around by then. Next few games will say a lot

Geekie has not been playing well ,but sending him to Providence would be a grave mistake. He is a complementary player and a far cry from the cause of the Bruins troubles. He is not the guy that wins or looses you games . As long as the high priced talent play the way they are playing the Bruins problems will continue

firing Monty and hoping to get the new coach boost will pretty much be their only options at that point. Just made two big win now signings and we don't really have enough talent on the NHL roster or in the system to make a big "shake things up" trade.

What's the exact stat about this? 75% of teams not in the playoffs at that time don't make it? Is it higher? I know it's significant, but if the Bruins don't turn around prior to that, its probably too late for whatever they try. Yeah, there's still a chance and we'll pull for them to beat the odds, but if I am Sweeney, I start looking at where things are after the next five games, and if they are still back of the pack, then sack the coach and most of the staff and/or look to make a trade of some kind (doesn't have to be a big Sinden type deal) to shake the room up.
