Prospect Info: '24-'25 Prospects Thread: Generation Z

It’s not the worst plan in the world, TBH. The odds of making enough money to raise a family as a long shot prospect are pretty poor. And who knows, it might be a better developmental ground for him anyway.

But isn’t he a bit old to play in the NCAA? Guy is coming in at 21 already.

It is definitely going to be an interesting few years seeing good CHL players going to play NCAA. I guess putting up good seasons in the NCAA with the hopes of getting an ELC is preferable than starting in the ECHL trying to work your way to the AHL then an ELC.

I don’t think it’s about he should or shouldn’t play in college at 21– I more think it’s very curious he can play after signing a professional tryout deal and playing professional games
He was an ATO last year, maybe for that reason? Although I notice when guys under ECHL only deals get plucked from Wheeling, its always an ATO.

More high end draft picks will change this

but that age is historically typical for NCAA freshman (20-21) in hockey

But yeah he can buy booze while his peers in English are still worrying about pimples
I did my undergrad at 23, most people didn't realise I was older until I mentioned it. I found being back in eduction more of an adjustment than being older than my classmates.
Yeah, I don't mean it as a pejorative, as older students are my favorite to teach in the university setting. It's just that traditionally the fringe prospects were fairly old professional hands by 21-22 if they were coming from CMJHL, but seeing these guys go to the NCAA at that age seems like maybe we'll be seeing more and more players making starting their professional careers at 24-25. I can't say what difference that will make, just that it's interesting.

I'm going to guess they will take away spots that would have gone to the 19/20 year olds coming out of the USHL and Major Junior A. Might lead to an increase in quality in the NCAA. Though some of those 20 year old freshmen do go on to have NHL careers. Former Pen, Mark Letestu, didn't make it to the NCAA until he was 20, had a great season, went pro and played 500+ NHL games. Matt Read was another who didn't play NCAA until he was 20, played 4 years in college and had a decent 400+ NHL game career.

It is a little sad and a lot hilarious that the CHL forced 19-year-olds to play in their league even when the kid was absolutely ready for the pro ranks, and they forced NHL teams to make an almost impossible decision (NHL or back to junior) on countless players over the years, only to see the NCAA swoop in and take their 19 and 20-year-old stud players.

Karma is a bitch. The NHL should 100% abolish the stupid CHL/NHL age restrictions. Lots of guys heading to the NCAA are far better off in the AHL.

And in fact, if the NHL were truly progressive in their thinking (they are not), they would have more prospects playing in the ECHL like a true "Double-A" development league. Instead of what we have now: beer leaguers, busts and a few goalie prospects.

What I find sad is that the CHL's largely greedy intentions have been usurped by the most corrupt of outfits.

Sports is a microcosm of society, I suppose.

Interesting, Tankov and Ilyin are going to be playing together next year. Tankov was loaned to Severstal for next year, which is Ilyin's team and who he's expected to be loaned to next year as well. Wonder if Ilyin can put in a good word to get Tankov signed.

I would think it would be Tankov hoping Ilyin can get him signed at this point. His development hasn’t looked great since coming back from a broken freaking neck. 0 KHL points so far, only productive in their minors. Hopefully he can have a good year in a new organization.

We also aren’t as starved for young talent as we were when we started getting hyped for him.

Tankov coming back from a year away and not being able to do any work and conditioning really has a Pejorative Sluring influence on one's growth. But if he can come back to be that player he was, he has the size and skill to make a dent in the prospect pool.
