You could certainly do worse than getting a couple guys who are in a similar mold like McGroarty, Martin, etc. They may not have one elite skill, but they do a lot of things above average and they have an exceptional work rate, so they're always involved in the play and have a knack for finding the puck.

In most cases, I'd actually prefer guys like that over a guy who does one thing exceptionally well but has question marks elsewhere.

In terms of more reasonable projections, I'd probably say their comparables are:

-Eklund: Seth Jarvis
-O'Brien: Dylan Strome
-Martin: Ivan Barbashev

All of these guys project to be 2nd liners or complementary top-6 guys, but I think them booming into 1st liners is totally possible. I definitely like all 3, but I probably have Martin, Eklund and O'Brien as my preference right now.

If we don’t take O’Brien I’m calling him Ryan Strome/Dal Colle hybrid and a PP merchant

If we do I’m calling him Suzuki/Bergeron 2.0 :laugh:

The attractive thing about O'Brien and Martin is they're bigger and currently centers. Eklund is clearly a winger, and his smaller frame gives a little pause even though he plays aggressively. But, Eklund has already played and produced solidly against men - albeit in the second tier - while Martin and O'Brien are playing in juniors.

O'Brien's on a pretty stacked team - seven skaters on Brantford have already been drafted. So are his stats inflated? Or is it a benefit that he's played alongside top level talent?

Martin is the opposite - just three other Soo players have been drafted, and Martin out-performed all of them. He's had to shoulder a heavier load with less help. Put him around better talent and does his production take off?

No easy answers, but enough there for all of them to also be among my preferred picks if the Pens stay within a pick or two of where they currently are.

I just looked at his powerplay numbers and that terrifies me in a bad way with him. O'Brien had 9 goals and 50 points on the powerplay this year, which leaves 22 goals and 47 points in 66 games at even strength (1 SH goal as well). That's a terrifyingly high amount of PP points.

For comparison, Martin had only 8 goals and 13 points on the powerplay with 3 goals and 7 points shorthanded. At even strength, Martin out-produced O'Brien with 22 goals and 52 points in 57 games.

I had a dream that San Jose kept their pick but then the Islanders won slot #2 and pushed us down to 10 and everyone in here was freaking out.

Yeah I was thinking that the other day when he was briefly brought up.

I feel like only top drafted star players with immediately sky high earning potential are largely the only ones coming over in the future. And even then I suppose it depends entirely on what their um... priorities... are.
 
Yeah, I was shocked with Murashov getting the okay to leave, but mostly that seemed to be because he was getting pushed out of the rotation at his old club. I don't think many of the non-elite prospects are going to want to come to the Pens unless they're already playing in NA.

I mean... he's a goaltender.

They were probably like "yeah whatever bud we'll just go down to the junkpile and get a new one."
