Prospect Info: '24-'25 Prospects Thread: Generation Z

Noticing a lot of College FA's already signing as well as the drafted ones signing with their teams, it's kind of funny how much of that has tapered off to almost nothing with the Penguins. In the past you'd get at least 1-2 ok-ish prospects signed. But I mean it's also good because these players must be paying attention and realizing how much of a shit show the Penguins are and how the youth are shit on by the coach and just swerve to another team that is a harder path when the retooling/rebuilding team usually would be the option to crack the NHL sooner.

Back in November, the NHL had a list of some of the top Undrafted prospects out of College.

  • Karsen Dorwart - Signed with the Flyers just recently.
  • Dalton Bancroft - Oilers apparently are super interested (went to the Bruins camp)
  • Jack Williams - Signed with Blue Jackets (went to Flyers camp)
  • Gleb Veremyev - Signed with Islanders (impressed at Bruins camp but signed with Isles)
  • Harrison Scott - Unsigned (went to VGK camp last summer)
  • Josh Nadeau - Dwarf at 5'8" and unsigned but I think he will probably end up with the Canes with his brother (did attend camp with the Habs)
  • Joey Larson - Unsigned (attended camps with Ducks, VGK, and Preds)
  • T.J Hughes (unrelated to the brothers) - He's pretty good, unsigned (went to Tampa's camp)
  • Christian Fitzgerald - Unsigned, mediocre numbers (Canucks camp, he's from around that area)
  • Josh Eernisse - Bloke has 1 goal this season, Sullivan has already surpassed the 4hr mark of his erection for him. Unsigned and of course, he was at the Pens camp, lmao, the worst prospect of the bunch too  -He was called a linebacker on skates, he's an absolute plug of a prospect.

Here's another good list.

Lol he is going to be the 13th guy and Yohe will write a month's worth of articles about how Sullivan gives young players a shot.

Frozen 4 is still going on isnt it. I thought college free agents was usually an April thing.

From the latest Athletic article:

“Let me tell you something,” Rakell said. “These two kids (McG and Ville), they should be playing in the top six right now. I’m glad they are. You know why they should be? Because they’re going to be top-six guys. They just are. You can see the talent. So why not play them there now? I’m glad.”

Rakell played with Koivunen enough in training camp to know what he needed to see.

He’s really fast and really good with the puck,” Rakell said. “He just needs to play. He’s really good.”

It's so much more encouraging hearing a star like Rakell talk about the new kids like that than a random reporter or scout.

Look dubas has to know what is missing is a top 6 center and will draft one. He can add more as he goes to that. Either with trades or potential Rangers pick. Dubas needs to get the younger players developing and getting ready for prime time. The plan is exactly that and with draft picks up the kazoo, young prospects will be in the system the next 3 years.

My takeaway from this article is Rakell sounds like he is preparing his exit from the Penguins. How dare he suggest that Koivunen should be playing top-six forward minutes! Does he not know we have Connor Dewar for that role now?

How dare he!

Center is such a huge organizational need that I just can't see there being consensus to draft wings or dmen unless there is a major drop. I like Martone being available at 6/7 or something like that. My worry is that say we get 6/7 and Eklund is the best option, they take him. Then at 15/16, they take a dman like Mrtka or Smith. That would be a nice addition to the organization, overall, but say you win the lottery next year and get McKenna. You have a gluttony of quality wings and zero center depth. Gonna look like the Hawks 2nd line of Panarin-Anisimov-Kane...IF you can find a center of that caliber. We have no one in the organization that can fill a top 6 center role and Malkin is done after next year.

I just can't stress enough how much the one or both of the picks needs to be a center. UNLESS Dubas has a major deal lined up to get us one like Rossi.

Aren’t a sizable chunk of wings in the NHL also former Cs too? I seem to vaguely remember Jake was a C in junior before switching to wing permanently in the AHL.

IIRC it’s easier for a C to switch to W than vice versa.

Yes. Because the talented forwards are usually put at center growing up.

I was not a talented C, I was an agitator. Does it show?
Does not compute, this does though:

Quinn Hutson has taken a big step in the second half of this season. This is the most dangerous and dynamic he has looked in the NCAA. His spacing and feel for scoring chances remain high-end. He's always open, adjusting constantly to stay inside space. His chemistry with Cole Hutson is really strong -- he, better than anyone else, anticipates Cole's next move and stays open for the pass. Scored with a tricky two-touch wrister after reading off Cole. Though he's not much of a playmaker, he shows a lot of play-building skills in transition. Hits long-range cross-ice passes, short-range lateral plays to teammates with speed, and uses the trailer, and then he gets open again. It's fair to wonder about how he'll translate to the next level -- he didn't show much puck-winning skills or ability to withstand contact, but he's becoming a legitimate prospect now.

A hat trick for Hutson and a tremendous game overall. Hutson's offensive feel -- his off-puck movement, timing, routes, etc. -- really stands out. Always positioned in the right spot and ready to shoot. Many NCAA scorers can do this, but he makes the micro-adjustments to become a perfect option, even at speed. Accelerates into open space with perfect timing -- not too soon to get caught, but not too late to fall behind the play. The best play was a pass high off the wall, followed by a dash inside and perfect cross-body redirection into the open net. Though he pulled off a 1-on-1 move once, he's not really a puckhandler, preferring to play the give-and-go game. He spots options instantaneously, finding high-value plays with one- or two-touch passes in transition. Skating-wise, he lacks depth and a separation gear. Didn't show any puck-winning, puck protection, or proactive contact skills, all three of which will be necessary for his pro transition. But he has upside as a fast-paced, off-puck scorer. He might need another year in college, but what a season of growth for Quinn.

Thomas Gale is from Holy Cross college, who just wrapped up their season. Looks pretty good for ECHL standards. Got some clips of him, will make a little highlight package of him after the game. Heres Jack Beck setting up Jordan Martel for a PPG to tie the game at 1.

The Pietila bros both assist the go ahead goal on the power play. Heres Chase getting the primary assist to Mats Lindgren.

Edit: DSP gets his 20th of the year on a low far side snipe coming down the RW. Bloomington scores a rebound goal around the net. Nailers up 3-2 now.

It def sucks to see all these teams pick up kids or make their signings and the Pens get nothing.
