I never got why they changed them

In the Netherlands they changed the goals in the 1980s because Ruud Gullit thought it was a psychological advantage when you score. If the ball (or in the case of hockey, the puck) stays in the net, the goalie has to actually retrieve the ball, giving you an edge psychologically over the team you just scored on. The same I always felt about hockey. Now with the new nets, the puck just bounces out.
