  • Congrats to our latest Sportsbook winners - GOLD MEDAL kihei, SILVER MEDAL fish7 and BRONZE MEDAL Sammy Kat - new tournament begins today 6/15
Depends if Sweden brings back all its top guys they the fav I think . Canada should be silver on paper at worse though
Slovaks could be a great darkhorse as they played a U19 team here mostly. Czechs will be strong again (similar to last few years) as well. USA will never send a weak squad. Either will Canada or Sweden. It's getting quite good.

and switzerland could be fighting for relegation i think. isn't the year upcoming there weak year?

Is this the year folks or does the drought continue? Need to avoid Czechia in the medal round and if we do play them, make sure to have all 5 guys in front of the net blocking shots in the final minute of regulation of a tie game.

A little bit odd that a guy’s first serious head coach gig is for a national team but neat

Seems to have been around the block more than a few times, sounds like he could be a solid fit

Whoever wrote his EP profile needs an ego check though lmao

Finland is also always strong.

Adjusting for handedness

Verhoeff
Rudolph
Carels
Lin
Villeneuve
Dupont
Smith

Is as an elite a unit as I can remember Canada having since 2020 and maybe 2015
Agreed. We'll have to see what Rudolph and Dupont decide over the next few months, but there's a realistic chance all 7 are in the NCAA next year. I think that will be a huge advantage over previous years as they adjust to playing a faster game against older opponents.

i just want Scott salmond fish fired
Always annoys me when he sits in the centre of the team photo

I'll throw out a general guess at what the team will look like, mostly for my own fun.

Missing due to the NHL: Schaefer, Kindel, Misa, McKenna, Martin

Malhotra Desnoyers O’Brien
Schultz Reschny Ruck
Dagenais Cootes Lafreniere
Belchetz Lawrence Schmidt
Ruck

Carels Verhoeff
Smith DuPont
Reynolds Rudolph
Reid

Ivankovic
Goalie 2

- I am guessing that Desnoyers and Cootes are available, even if it is due to the AHL. If not the team takes a big hit. Nashville seemed to really like Martin last year so my feeling is that he makes the NHL. Schaefer, Kindel, Misa, and McKenna are locks to be missing.

- I'm high on Schultz and I can see him getting a somewhat prominent spot as a 16 year old. Canada has been open to using younger players in prominent roles lately. DuPont is more of a lock to be a main contributor as a young guy.

- There are usually a few lower picks who make the roster, and I could see guys like Lafreniere and Reynolds being the steady presences and defensive contributors that often make teams like this.

- I'm probably too heavy on 18 year olds but things get skewed by the NHL taking several 19 year olds out of the equation.

- O'Brien is not a winger, but he has played with Malhotra before... I don't know, I could see him being placed on the wing for better or worse. If Desnoyers or Cootes is not available he slides into centre.

- Wasn't overly impressed with Donskov's coaching at the iihf world championship. I'd rather if they had just given Gardiner MacDougall a chance. We'll see though.

I really was under the impression tat it would be Hunter again this year...

By the way, have they fired Scott Salmond yet? as long as he is heading HC we will continue this downward spiral

Barry Trotz really liked Martin and/or wanted to show off his draft pick, anyway. But Trotz is no longer GM. I think it's likely with the new rule Martin will at least get to play in the AHL, but I would think the Preds would still make him available for the WJC in that case. :dunno: It's not impossible Martin could force his way into the NHL, but I don't think the Preds are likely to rush him. If he's not ready - and he was definitely not even close to ready last year - then he should be available for the WJC again.

Nice roster, very close to my own.

I'm very high on Schultz as well and would love to see him get a spot if he has a big start to the year but would personally be surprised if they take him. His Hlinka performance will likely be a determining factor.

A dark horse candidate for me is Dima Zhilkin. He looked good in both appearances for Canada, seems to play the game the way Hockey Canada likes despite being undersized, and I think he's poised for a big year in Saginaw.

They announced that it would be Donskov a while back. Neither of Hunter's WJC teams played all that well, even the winning team. I don't mind him getting a shot last year given his tremendous junior success and that his team won in 2020, and he's definitely a step up from some of the career losers that Hockey Canada has let coach the team... but I'm good with moving on. Salmond is a moron.

That's a good point. In no way should Martin have been around the NHL last year, and it may be different with a new regime running things. I see Martin, Desnoyers, and Cootes as all in a similar boat. I wouldn't be surprised if Canada has all three or none of the three. Makes a big difference for how this team will look though.

They seemed to like Zhilkin's brother as well, who knows. He's draft eligible last year but he's old for his draft class, which should help his case. Canada is weaker on the right side so that helps him as well.

I see a recent trend of Hockey Canada being more open to young guys. Doesn't mean that Schultz will make the team, but I think his odds are better than they would have been a decade or more ago. Agreed that Hlinka will be a big factor.
