I can't blame players for not wanting to play for the Canadian teams. They haven't won a cup in a long time and some of these teams are ran so badly that you don't want to step into that mess.

How is it fair? On what planet is paying a 26 year old with a career high 27 points and is a 4th line center 3.5M fair?
He's not paid to produce. Have you seen other contracts around the league? Have you seen the C market?

What is his value then? 3M is the going rate for quality 4th liners with new contracts to sign. In 2 weeks no one would bat an eye at a 26 year old C that's heavily relied upon on the PK getting paid 3.5 on a multiyear deal

I mean now, sure, but:

Edmonton went to B2B SCF and is an annual contender

Toronto before this had the longest playoff streak

Calgary won their division before Tkachuk and Gaudreau left. Ditto Vancouver before the max exodus of Horvat/Miller/Hughes.

Winnipeg has been a perennial top-7 team in hockey before this past season.

The Canadian teams have been doing just fine.

Let's assume we trade Nichushkin and Drury.

If we don't want to "give" Ivan a spot without earning it, or don't think he's ready(dude led our AHL team in points in the playoffs, was 2nd on the team in points for the 2nd half of the season, and has REALLY developed his game), then there may be a 3LW spot open.

An asshole like Marchment, Bunting, etc. would make sense... BUT... we know Bednar would neuter these guys and/or hate them. Also, Marchment will cost a lot more than Bunting will.

Lehkonen - MacKinnon - Necas
Landeskog - Nelson - Brindley/Hughes
??? - Kadri - Hughes/Brindley
Kelly - Roy - O'Connor
Ivan

Wouldn't make sense to trade Nuke and then give his AAV to Marchment. Bunting shouldn't cost much though.

Edit: like you said

I think we can assume too that Sakic and Bednar are pretty aligned as well. So I doubt we see more transactions for players that Bednar doesn't really like. I do still think we acquire one forward with that lineup you have.

I'm also starting to think Ryan Shea is a guy we target in FA, which leaves the question of Kulak or another guy for the left side. And that would be that.

Marchment has always been trash in the playoffs. He's a 52-point regular-season scorer, 26-point postseason player. Literally half the production.

I don't want this team overspending for mediocre 31-year-olds. Colorado needs fresh legs. Some of that's going to come from within, but I want them to roll the dice on a value-suppressed young player or two.
