With all the talk about the Bruins needing a true number one center, I figured it was worth asking… who are the actual 1st line centers in the league?
Here are the players age 32 or younger who are either established 1st line centers or on a realistic path toward becoming one:
Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon, Auston Matthews, Leon Draisaitl, Jack Eichel, Aleksander Barkov, Sebastian Aho, Brayden Point, Elias Pettersson, Jack Hughes, Robert Thomas, Tage Thompson, Dylan Larkin, Nick Suzuki, Tim Stutzle, Wyatt Johnston, Connor Bedard, Macklin Celebrini, Adam Fantilli, Leo Carlsson, Logan Cooley, Mason McTavish, Frank Nazar, Matty Beniers, Tomas Hertl
That's 25 players league‑wide. There just aren't many true number one centers in the NHL.
And not all 25 of these guys are slam‑dunk franchise centers either. Pettersson, Larkin, Hertl, and younger players like McTavish and Beniers all have parts of their game that make it fair to wonder whether they will end up as true long‑term top line centers.
The real question is how many of these players are actually obtainable. I just don't see the Bruins landing any of them, which is why the idea of simply trading for a number one center never lines up with how rare these players really are.
I included Hertl because he may shake loose from Vegas and has ties to Pastrnak. At age 32 though, he'd probably function more as a strong 1B or second line center in Boston.
