HF Habs: 2026 NHL Draft: McKenna Mania

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.

Not too many teams are tanking this coming season which is strange because McKenna looks like a Superstar player.

However, by January 1st, teams will start divesting to get into the lottery draw for 2026.

A really early top 20 from Scott Wheeler (NYT, April 2025)

1. Gavin McKenna (LW) - Medicine Hat Tigers
2. Ivar Stenberg (RW) - Frolunda HC (SHL)
3. Ryan Roobroeck (C) - Niagara Ice Dogs
4. Ryan Lin (RD): Vancouver Giants
5. Keaton Verhoeff (RD): University of North Dakota
6. Viggo Bjorck (C): Djurgardens (J20)
7. Mathis Preston (RW) - Spokane Chiefs
8. Tynan Lawrence (C): Muskegon Lumberjacks
9. Ethan Belchetz (LW): Windsor Spitfires
10. Adam Novotny (LW): Mountfield HK (Czechia)
11. Daxon Rudolph (RD): Prince Albert Raiders
12. Adam Nemec (KW): HK Nitra (Slovakia)
13. Niklas Aaram-Olsen (LW): Orebro HK (J20)
14. Elton Hermansson (RW): Orebro HK (J20)
15. Tobias Tomik (LW): HK Dukla Trencin (Slovakia)
16. Carson Carels (LD): Prince George Cougars
17. Marcus Nordmark (LW): Djurgardens IF (J20)
18. Oscar Holmertz (C): Linkoping HC (J20)
19. Mikey Berchild (LW): USNTDP
20: Chase Reid (RD): Soo Greyhounds

Chase Reid, Soo Greyhounds, 6’2, 185, is a marvellous prospect. Great skater, passer and smart. His outlet passes are beauties.

He’s a RD.

Joined the Soo in December, made immediate impact, and finished with a ppg. Original pledge to Michigan State.

I think Keaton Verhoeff will be a very very very high pick. He dominated the WHL and now going to UND with Cole Reschny. If anything over 20-25 pts playing big minutes, he might be a top 5 pick easy. The kid is 6'4 RHD... should we say more? Also plays with an edge.

I would add Lars Steiner of the Rouyn Noranda Huskies. PPG kid last year in the Q.

Tankers are going to be feasting for the next two drafts. SJ is stacking a lot of incredible young talents, potentially more to come with 2026/2027.
San Jose will have to start another team. There's way too many talents going there. AT one point...give some to other teams.

I'm expecting Roobroeck and Verhoef to climb. Beckham Edwards could be top 20 talent. Know nothing about the Euro talent yet.

If Hughes can get an extra 1st rounder on 2026, he needs to do it.
We have an excess of D-man veterans and prospects. We can make this happen.

I thought every one of the dregs had entered Win Now mode, ‘cept Pittsburgh?

Sharks planning to explore the sea bed some more?

Agree, I get the whole ‘our core’ thing, but HuGo have stated their want to contend every year.

The older core players are what I think of as just part of the first wave. I can’t see them ever letting the draft cupboard get bare like Toronto and TB have.

And Lordy, turning 29 isn’t The End of productivity like some seem to fear.

Look how long it took the Caps to cash in with Ovechkin.
