Congrats to the US. Congrats to all of our prospects. Finland continues to suprise us all. Their demise as a power is a little premature. They will come back next year and cause trouble for everyone they face.

A population of 5.5M. I would say they are more than holding their own. Their netminder was unreal good in this tourney. Clearly the best goalie in the tourney. The Fins play their system and it works. I thought they were all over the USA in the early stages. However, as the game progressed, it was clear they did not have the depth to keep up with the USA.

ASP obviously had a great tourney, but Kiskinnen and Augustine were really solid too.

Plante didn't play a big role, but I really like the style of game he plays. Tenacious, hard to play against and has skill. He's going to have a big role on that team next year

Canton Mi
I think it's likely that Cossa becomes our Ben Johnson via TB and a big return is on him in trade around his ufa deal most likely.

Zeev Buium was so freaking good. Part of me wants to inquire about what it would cost to acquire him and the other part of me is scared to hear the answer. He's going to be an elite NHL d-man.
With Seider, Edvinsson, and ASP all either already elite or trending to be, I don't think we should be spending assets to get another skilled dman. Use those assets for a top C.

Great tournament. Big win for Augustine. USA’s defense this year was the weakest I can remember but they pulled it off.

Trolls on here should be punching air that their boy Eiserman played less than 10 minutes in a game that went to OT.
not really he was the 13th forward 2nd pp and still had 6 points. Better than MBN playing a division lower with 1 in 5 games. Next year he’ll be top minutes on usa. Still would take him in a redraft

Late but holy f*** has Gibson ever taken a step back from last year. Forget how disappointing he's been in junior this year (he was supposed to be one of the league's best two-way dmen this season...the team is bad but that shouldn't stop a 19 year old from producing in the OHL), he was also Canada's worst defensemen by a mile...no idea what Nashville sees in him that made them wanna give us an actual decent looking forward prospect for him

Buium-Seider
Edvinsson-ASP

Put the cheapest d-men in the league on the bottom pair and that's as elite a defense as you're ever likely to see in the modern NHL. Plus it makes up for Ken Holland fanning on Quinn Hughes, who was in his backyard and is as elite an offensive d-man as you'll ever find.

I mean it's not going happen, but damn would I inquire to see what it would cost to acquire Zeev.

Also, no one is trading a top C.

And then there's no money left to pay forwards or goalies.

Pettersson and Miller are both heavily rumoured to be available for the right offer.

Eichel, O'Reilly, Seguin, Tavares, Suzuki, Thompson, Monahan, Strome, Zibanejad were all either traded for or signed in FA in the past decade. So top Cs do get moved. You just need to strike when the iron is hot (see Pettersson above).

You'd be paying Petterssen $11.6 million each year until he's 34. The beauty of 3 of those 4 d-men is they would all be on entry level deals.

Edvinsson: $894k
Buium: not signed yet
ASP: $950k

And even in a "bad" year, Pettersson is just shy of PPG. With how much the cap should increase in the coming years, his $11.6M is not a concern. If he returns to his 90-100pt form, that will be an excellent contract.

Those entry level deals will be over in a few years. And then those players will require major pay increases. And then that D corps will be just as costly as it is elite. Which brings us back to the problem of not having any money to pay forwards or goalies.

Buium is signed.

We're talking about Zeev, not Shai.

Because @Run the Jewels expressed an interest in acquiring him.
Yeah, we are kinda in no man's land right now, kinda in position to compete for a playoff spot but not an obvious contender. Yzerman said we are a "long way from that" in his presser to announce the hiring of McLellan.

Now we obviously look much better under McLellan, then there's the fact the new coach considers Trent Yawney to be a very good developer of d-men. I don't think we're going to get Buium, just musing on how if you could swing a trade for him it would allow us to build out from the back with an elite defense. That worked quite nicely for us when we had Lidstrom, Kronwall, Rafalski Chelios, etc. It would also increase the odds Cossa and/or Augustine turn into quality goalies.

This doesn't seem out of place in a thread on the World Juniors where Buium's gold medal clinching assist wouldn't look out of place on Lidstrom's highlight reel. It was a thing of beauty.
