2025 World Championships

Since there hasn't been any news, I'm guessing Hutson and Caufield won't go

Looks like they went back home to the shire.

I didn't think Heineman had any shot, saw where Eklund got cut by a skate on his arm, but they must of had a # of players turn them down as Heineman did not look very good after coming back from injury, at least in the little I saw.

I saw were Slaf turned them down, I thought he would go for sure but it looks like a bunch of players turned down going for them so I had wondered if the Habs would even consider this but with so many bodies in Laval, why not loan Mesar to the WC's instead of sitting on his ass. He only played 42 game this year, just hate to see a rookie sitting this long. Granted if they somehow think they might use him but you have Tuch, Kidney, Thorpe, Dineen, Dunlap all sitting. Just a thought I had last week, forgot if I posted it here or just on twitter

I like Heineman & glad he’s playing. Unfortunately Emil didn’t look the same after the freak motor vehicle accident? Everyone seems to be cheering for him and hopefully he can continue his development because he definitely has a future with the Habs.

Lots of people signing up to play with Crosby.

Shame Nick couldn't go, we need more guys trying to sell him on Montreal. Matheson's gotta work a double shift here.

You know Mack's in his ear constantly but I don't really see the assets in Colorado to get it done and honestly Mack's numbers cratered without Rantanen, both guys were feeding off each other (two insane playoff games aside, Rantanen's been under a PPG since leaving after multiple hundred point seasons). I don't see Colorado as a top tier team anymore and they have a bare system. Landeskog's miraculous return also leaves them with no cap space for Crosby since they still need to sign 5-6 guys to ice a roster and have 5 mil total. They were already relying on depth taking cheap 1 mil deals, I can't imagine Drouin wants to just take discounts forever when this is his last chance to make money. He's likely got no post-playing career in hockey since he's not a smart systems guy and hates spotlight. Colorado somehow went from having a bunch of good contracts to a bunch of dead cap because half these guys can't play a full season. They have no inherently bad contracts, but are maxed out on cap without having a top tier roster, and several of these guys need raises either immediately or next summer.

Can't question geniuses though, they thought keeping Girard and Colton was more important than retaining Mikko Rantanen. They can't even retain this "all-in" roster they put forth that lost in 7 to Dallas, so how are they going to fare with a roster that's losing 3-4 good pieces this summer and probably can't afford to re-sign Necas next? That's just what happens when everyone is paid fair value and you have no notable ELCs or discounts on the team. Those Wood/Colton/Girard/even Lehkonen contracts are the types you need to avoid if you want to keep your stars. Depth wins championships and all but in addition to top guys, not replacing them with depth. Imagine Edmonton trading Drai for Kadri+ so they could retain the two RFAs last summer. Avs had the second best forward duo in the league and did the really dumb thing HFBoards always suggests to trade one for depth.

Anyways, this might be the best WC team Canada has sent in a long time. Full of guys who would normally say no. Justin Barron made the team two years ago along with 18 year old undrafted Fantilli. Ryker Evans is basically the only guy who's not an established top 6/top 2 guy of the skaters on this team.

Oh oh... Sweden gets scored on by Austria, Baumgartner manages to fire a rebounding puck initally shot by Raffl.

1-0

Huge PK by Austria. For now, that talented Swedish team is getting humbled on home ice.
