WC: 2025 Women's World Championships

I just realized during the game that the PWHL season is not concluded yet. Awkward timing with this event still being the highest profile for the women.
It is. The PW is talking with the IIHF to have it moved. The crowd in Zurich is open to the idea but not their preferred slot (November, before their season starts. As Tardif said, and what then, if their season starts earlier in the future?). Next year being Olympic, it is supposed to be held in August anyway so maybe September could be an option, as not all Euro leagues are started yet at that time of the year. The April window could then be reused by the U20/22 tourney they keep talking about, though European clubs could be heavily affected by it then.

Interesting, thanks for the information. It does make sense. It doesn't seem feasible to maintain things as they currently stand beyond the short term.

Sweden blew out Norway 8-0 and Japan squeaked by Germany with a 1-0 win. Watching the USA vs. Switzerland game now, and we just scored a power play goal to go up 1-0. Fake edit: 2-0 now.

Sweden wins group B, and along with Japan and Germany will advance to the quarterfinals. Norway and Hungary get relegated. The current game can have no effect whatsoever on the quarterfinal matchups. They will be:

USA vs. Germany
Canada vs. Japan
Finland vs. Sweden
Czech Republic vs. Switzerland

All quarterfinal matchups will be on Thursday. Czech Republic vs. Switzerland will get the 17:00 slot, but the other three have yet to be determined about who plays at what time.

I'm picking all the left side for wins with no upsets

Then Canada vs US for Gold
Finland vs Czechs for Bronze

Exactly.

And it looks like the Czechs might break the record for attendance at women's world championships, having already broken (their own) men's worlds' attendance record last year. By far the top ice hockey fans in Europe, possibly the world - only competing with Canada for that title outside Europe, and I feel we have an edge because we'd even sell out France against Kazakhstan during the worlds in the Czech Republic. Canadian fans tend to be very interested in Canada and some of the top nations, then there is a huge drop-off in terms of attendance. Czech fans just love ice hockey and will even give the Kazakhs and French some love..

Also, whoops. I originally posted that the quarterfinals are on Friday, because I forgot that today was Tuesday instead of Wednesday.

They're also actually on Thursday, the 17th of April.

The IIHF website is now listing the start times for the other three quarterfinals. They are as follows:

10:00 (04:00 eastern) - Finland vs. Sweden
13:30 (07:30 eastern) - United States vs. Germany
17:00 (11:00 eastern) - Czech Republic vs. Switzerland
20:30 (14:30 eastern) - Canada vs. Japan

Didn’t even realize this was going yet even though I know they do this early. I don’t know, maybe the lack of PWHL players will make it more competitive, but doesn’t seem like it based on the scores.

Is Jenni Hiirikoski still playing? I see she’s not here, and know she’s older, would be a shame if she retired before Finland won one of these.

Found an article about her. She apparently missed the last seven games of her team's regular season due to a mysterious illness. Came back for the playoffs but didn't quite feel like herself, and then her team got swept in the finals without her playing in them. That mystery illness is the reason she's not at this tournament. One year left on her contract that covers next season, hope she recovers and plays well. Would like to see her at the Olympics next year.

Mysterious illnesses are always ominous

Swiss ladies today. Hoping the Czech lionesses can pull this one out!

Missed the game because I was at the dentist. I see your Czech ladies pulled it off 7-0.

Taking in Canada vs. Japan now but I have to leave before it's over (I can probably watch the first two periods before I have to go). It might be more or less settled by then, but I hope the Japanese ladies put up a good fight.

We got the expected results and it seems that there is a clear ranking in women’s ice hockey, once again confirmed by those results. Looking at the recent past (4-5 years), it is Canada and the US above everyone, then a toss-up tier between Finland and the Czech Republic, slightly below that Sweden, then Germany and Switzerland toss-up, then Japan.
