When Yager gets his feet moving he looks good. But, the bad passes, the poor decisions in the o zone.,.... it's concerning. I'm still high on this guy, but he has a long, long way to go.
Hopefully he is part of the new core group in 2-3 years. Still has plenty of time to develop and correct some of his flaws on the ice.

It looked like he was gripping the stick (so to speak). What stood out most to me was the lack of crisp passing. On the positive side, the skill level is obvious. Actually it was reminiscent of when Scheifele was captain and looked overwhelmed.

Being Captain of any team representing your country is a heavy pull but I like that he took a regular shift and was on the pp and pk. I think he has a bright future but it's going to happen down the road

The refs had a bad game last night but Team Canada had a worse tournament. Hopefully they don’t try to galaxy brain it next year and just take the best players instead of selecting guys for specific roles.

On the bright side, I liked Yager’s defensive game and thought he showed some high IQ and nice passing, too.

I am glad I didn't watch this game until after it was done. Probably would have got too fired up...

Junior level reffing is pretty bad. Diving is awful for the sport.

Yager, pretty good. This guy is going to be my next favourite Jet. Just kills it on the draws. Thought he was the best Canadian in the most crucial game.

The laundry list of Hockey Canada woes goes on.
Maybe Dave Cameron wasn't the best choice for coach, but one of convenience in the home town.

Maybe Team Canada would have been better with some more Jets prospects.

Always hard to see these young men battle and lose the way they did. Played their hearts out.
It's a lot of pressure on a team that wasn't the best it could be.

IIHF reffing isn't great but Gibson's penalty at the end of the third is a penalty 10 times out of 10. The disallowed goal, probably would've stood in the NHL.

Team left some top talent at home.
I think we all know there’s no such thing as a penalty that “is a penalty 10 times out of 10” at any level with the state of ice hockey officiating. I don’t have an issue with that specific call, but the consistency was a big problem last night. How was Gibson’s only a minor when the earlier knee was a major? Most would agree Gibson’s was worse. Why was the elbow shimmer into the back of McKenna’s head minutes earlier not called, especially when it happened right in front of the referee? I do think that was a silly challenge by Cameron.

Definitely agree with you on the roster selection. They overthought it, I think.

Poorly constructed team, poorly coached and you get the result that happened this year. It's too bad but Canada's domination of international tournaments is in all probability over

Not sure how much I can share but I know a few WHL scouts in Manitoba who have told me that they are constructing team Canada at all levels using mostly Analytics. They felt a few guys from the Western league should have been there. Too many OHL kids again doing nothing again. Left the best OHL kids in Junior. One guy said all these guys should be there....Yakemchuk,Cristall,Mews,Parekh,Walton,Greentree,Misa,Barlow and Sennecke.

Again they might be biased being WHL guys but man that team was depressing. All you got from TSN was EASTON COWAN IS THE BEST because he was a Leafs draft pick and even they couldn't sell this team. How guys like Akey,Bonk,Beudoin,Cataford,Gibson,Gauthier and Luchenko. All those guys did nothing and added nothing. You telling me that those guys are better then the players above who all having tremendous seasons? Add in the fact you neuter guys like Mckenna,Dickinson and Molendyk. Our top scorers for the team were not even in the top 50 for the tournament. Kazahkstan had guys who out scored everyone on our team.

And they are tugging each others balls after the tourney coming up with excuses about this team. Like f*** off seriously

Between the Pipes
5GP - 34(2 min ) - 1 ( 5 min ) - 2 ( 10min ) - 1 ( game ) = 113 PIMs

This is international hockey with international refs. You want to win this tourney, don't take penalties. Or if you do, make sure you have the best PK going.

PIM by teams still playing:

CZE - 77
USA - 50
FIN - 65
SWE - 38

Just to add.... maybe Canada tanking for a number of years is a good thing. Maybe then the popularity will also tank, and people can go to games without having to taking out a 2nd mortgage.

I thought his passes were splendid? He was one of the very few who could actually make a good pass throughout the tournament. Plus he was excellent on faceoffs and sound defensively.

He made a few great passes in that last game, but over the course of the tournament, it wasn't good......imo. His playmaking looked sloppy. But as I said earlier the skill is there, he just looked like he was feeling the pressure.

He like most of the team was off his game the first few games. I thought he really upped his game and execution the last few games.

Needs to gain consistency in bringing that tenacity and execution, but he has plenty of time to get there.

Great post. On top of this being a horribly put together team, the coaching was just mind boggling.

What exactly was their game plan out there? Tons of stupid, undisciplined penalties every single game, and the coach just stands there semi-drooling without saying anything to the bench or refs or assistant coaches at all!!

Using mostly analytics??? Wow , i can see using it to help a little but not mostly. How did Team Canada be so successful before analytics came around? When the coach was asked why is the team taking so many penalties he said that there is basically nothing he could do about that, coaching was definitely part of the problem.

Absolutely.

I felt like he started off slow (sigh, who didn't?) But he showed up for the USA and then did so again big time against the Czech.

His defensive game was certainly evident and impressed me. Plus, I am not sure where he finished in the end, but flirting with ~70% in the dot is outstanding.

Oh no..... we've had some bad tourneys
As much as I do agree with you, the reason this is bad is we could've had a lot of arsenal in Sennecke, Misa, Parekh, Yakemchuk, who are all top ten picks and left them off. Sennecke went onto rip the OHL during the WJC. I mean they may have attitude problems or the rising costs in Canada are just that crazy enough to end youngsters hockey careers, but from how I see it this could've been a bronze medal at worse.
