Yes. This happens every year and one country has used it pretty regularly for their losses. Just saying.
No other country is ever in a position where they're missing back to back 1st overall picks who are having very strong starts to their NHL careers. It's worth mentioning when people start hand wringing over the state of hockey in Canada. I say this as an American who loves when people start hand wringing over the state of hockey in Canada

There are players missing from all teams.
Yes, but that doesnt mean that Canada isnt the best hockey country in the world ATM. If it was best on best and all eligible players played Canada would be the large favorites.

That doesnt mean that the US didnt win fair and square.

I've never used it as an excuse before, and it's not an excuse now. But there's no denying that Bedard and Celebrini would have radically changed the outcome.

It's pretty rare when two players of that caliber are missing from one team in the WJC.
Would it have been normal for Bedard and Celebrini to be there? Genuinely asking.

Did Crosby go? It just seems weird for players of their caliber, so clearly established as NHL players, to go stomp on some teenagers.

I think he means that it's rare to have not just one, but 2 players of that calibre missing.

I don't recall one person saying its why they lost. Just people saying you can't claim to be #1 when half of Canadas best U20 players aren't even there.

They should have picked a better roster (and coach.)

Sennecke, Cristall, Yakemchuk, etc. All were available.

Right but why is it expected they would be there? Do players of that caliber normally play in the WJC after being drafted, either in their rookie year or 2nd year of being a full time NHLer?

If you're unfamiliar with the politics Team USA and Canada play a ton of politics with their WJC rosters. Tie goes to the national development program. Americans playing major junior go in with a strike against them. Canadians not playing for a CHL club go in with a strike against them. DeBrincat didn't make team USA. It's officially unofficial because he played for Eerie instead of the USNDTP or a NCAA club.

Wow.

I can see now why the WJC's are so much better than the NHL playoffs and Olympics :sarcasm:

This is also absolutely true. Not having Bedard and Celebrini was out of their control. But they left off some guys who would've definitely helped. A self-inflicted wound. I'm hoping the people who constructed this team are never invited back.

He tried to sell penalties twice in the gold medal game alone.

He's going to get a lot of embellishment calls in the NHL.
I don't recall those specifically, but there were quite a few penalties in the gold game. Refs swallowed their whistles (on both sides).

They are. Put Bedard Celebrini Misa Perekh Sennecke Cristall on that team and they win the whole thing.
So
Canadians become absolute lunatics about the WJC on the internet.
Yep, and outside of a pretty small group of people, no one else in any other country cares.

I think everybody knows Canada is still #1 in hockey. Just that countries are catching up. And Canadians forget how arrogant they often are winning (often on their home ice too as half are held there). So I don’t mind the peacocking.

And imagine if Russia with their recent talent are allowed in. So there are lots of what if’s as there always are.

I do think the different paths the US and Canada use for youth/junior development leans towards the US. I think Canada is going to find it impossible to change their whole program as was mentioned a few years ago as a reason US is catching up quickly.

Are we sure they would have been invited? After all, they might not play "the right way".

Obviously sarcastic, but think that it's hard to say when guys like Sennecke/Misa and Parekh/Yakemchuk were either cut or not even invited to the selection process.

There are politics at all levels but DeBrincat wasn't selected for the WJC because he was ineffective and took a couple stupid penalties (including an egregious spearing penalty) in the *prior WJC* he did play in. The dude literally played for a USA WJC team in his draft year, had one goal and 25 PIMs in 5 games and the next year team USA said, hey maybe we can find another scorer that won't lose his shit and spear someone this time around. And then they did.

If Bedard and Celebrini were there, Canada would've won gold and it wouldn't have been close. Connor would've put up 40pts.
