The problem with not spending is they don’t have the contract extensions either. The only extension we’ve done was Jayden Danns, and we’ve just sent him on loan to Sunderland. We can’t say we didn’t do A because of B, if neither A nor B is done.

If you are a big club why take the risk sometimes?

I look at a club like Brighton who often sign kids from eastern Europe, Asia, and smaller South American Countries. They can sign kids from these less flashy footballing nations for cheaper, give them the time to actually develop, and see if they can hack it at the Premier League level. Then if you are Chelsea you can just buy them up when the risk is gone and the player has some proven Prem level acumen.

To be fair, the comparison is a bad center back, a mercurial but talented forward for 10 M for six months and a back up GK.
 
Villa sold Duran and signed a bunch of deadbeats. Meh.

What makes you call Danso bad?

Kinsky is young for a goalkeeper, he could very well turn out to be more than a back-up.

In a way, but they have a very good record of getting the most out of those

Do they? Who are the closest comparables to the type of signings they made this January? 4 recent Villa moves seem to be pretty direct parallels:

1. Coutinho - very unsuccessful, is still on their books but has been on perpetual loan conveyor belt.
2. Bailey - who has been (as described when signed) mercurial and frustrating, with flashes of good and many more flashes of useless.
3. Diaby - who was also mercurial and frustrating, but thankfully they were bailed out by Saudi Arabia
4. Lenglet - was bad, was depth so didn't matter that much I suppose

Aston Villa's business this summer checks all of the player mould boxes of their bad recent business, as opposed to the very savvy moves which have gotten them where they are now.

With the exception of Malen, they're all loans so the stakes are pretty low. But they have not historically gotten success from these types of signings

Andres Garcia was also permanent. But he seems like a very minor piece. For now at least.

In terms of local talent, I'd say we are top-notch, but life would be so much easier if a team had a better scouting network in must-need places like central Europe and South America. It's actually pretty funny, I was watching AFTV's transfer deadline show and one bloke mentioned that most of Arsenal's sales have been from homegrown talent which cost them nothing, so we're making a lot more money than a team like Villa who keeps buying talent like Diaby and making a small profit over it.

Saw something in my news app on my phone today that said that United were willing to pay 40 million for Fermin Lopez, but the player wasn't interested. Also cited Juventus as a potential suitor. Whether that's true or not, I don't know, but no way would I take 40 million for him if Nico Gonzalez is going for 60 million.

But seriously I also don’t really rate Danso. He was one of those guys that never really did anything in a back 4, then suddenly found form playing in the middle of a back 5 next to two guys that were arguable better than him. Those are generally the kind of players I wouldn’t sign but maybe that’s just me. I’m not going to take a guy who only stood out as CCB in a back 5 and think that there is going to be a seamless transition into whatever you want to call what Ange is doing.

But also don’t think they did any extensive scouting here. They just knew that he was attainable because he was halfway to Wolverhampton

He has similar stats to Saliba. At Saint Etienne. In 2018/19. When he was 17. So clearly the 26-year-old Danso is the next Saliba, which is why Spurs had a tough time fighting off Wolverhampton for him.

I’m with you. People say I pick on them, but I simply don’t see any genius strategy here. i could tell a player “hey come here instead of Wolverhampton and we will figure it out later”. Honestly I think Danso would have been better of going to Wolverhampton because they would have just put him as CCB in a back 5. I think Wolverhampton probably put more thought into a Danso transfer than Tottenham did

I can't really blame Spurs. They obviously need a body, especially with Dragusin out for the season now. They were already playing a kid midfielder at CB and while VDV is back, they can't expect him to be able to play every few days for the next three weeks, although, to be fair, Spurs' schedule doesn't really lend itself to resting CBs
