2025 Usports Recruiting

Do you guys think that because of the new CHL/NCAA rule that commitments will generally be coming much later than in previous years? Also, is there a set date teams have to have a roster?
Other people will have a better answer, but students have to be registered by a certain date. Normally, teams will have their roster set earlier, but if a student has not registered yet, they can't be on the roster.

I was going to post that I can see good students who finish their undergraduate degree after 3 seasons moving back to Canada to complete a Masters and play at the same time. Thought I would check into Cole Craft, and this seems to be exactly what he is doing:

The late great Kelly Nobes, who had a Masters himself, always recruited graduate students with much success. This is an avenue some coaches will pursue, but I wouldn't expect too many of these transfers.
I figured that's what he was doing, but I was looking more at his hockey stats. Matter of fact, I thought of mentioning post-grad, but I forgot. Good to see him doing this.

1) Yes because there will be a lot more uncertainty. I also expect some late transfers from the NCAA to USports as depth players lose their ice time to CHL recruits.

2) To play in the Fall they have to be registered in 3 FT equivalent courses in the Fall semester. Typically the university deadlines for registration Fall in late September. Aside from being registered in courses, there is no seoarate USports deadline. A player can be added mid-semester so long as they are a FT student.

3) As a Hockey Canada sanctioned league, in the Winter semester their roster must be finalized by January 10th. This deadlibe applies to all Hockey Canada sanctioned Junior leagues as well. So a player can't quit Junior on January 11th and switch to USports, even if they are a fullt time student.

is there a roster limit size of 23 guys like Junior hockey by January 10th aswell? If so, could the potential NCAA to Usports trickle down cause guys to get cut? How does that work with Usports? Thanks

4 years NCAA, but didn't play at all last year. 2 years eligibility?
57 games, 11 points.
USPORTS use to have a 'career' rule that made 4-years at NCAA equivalent to 5-years of USPORTS if you finished your undergrad. In this case, his NCAA career was only 3 years (with 2 years of USPORTS elig. left) - he could enroll either to finish his undergrad or start a Grad degree.

... will generally be coming much later than in previous years?
Yes - I suspect it will be a crazy and busy September

Also, is there a set date teams have to have a roster?

USPORTS rosters are closed on or around January 10th.

Once a player has appeared in a Regular Season game, he is 'rostered' and can not move to another team. Up until then - they can move (there are stories, even as recently as 2018, of a player at practice for one AUS school who left in late September to join another school since he had not played in a game yet).

The AUS (Atlantic University Sports) has a limit of 24 'rostered' players - after 24 have 'played' and/or it's after January 10th, your roster is closed regardless of the number of guys at practice or sitting in the stands. (note - the limit does not apply to goaltenders).

The other USPORTS conferences do not have this roster limit and can have lots of guys in the stands, but they can not add to that list after January 10th

This applies to all Hockey Canada levels (U9 and up) not just the Junior A leagues. All teams in all HC jurisdictions have to have their rosters updated and complete prior to midnight. This also includes all coaches, managers, trainers and safety staff who want to be behind the bench.

Review Miami's post on FT (Full Time student). You have to be a full-time student at the school prior to playing and sometimes that can take awhile; enroll, pay tuition, get your transcript approved and credits assigned.. once he is "accepted", then he can play. To save time - most enroll into three (3) accredited online courses from that school in a No-Degree program and work on the other stuff (transferring into a degree and transcript validation) later

Marcus Pacheco - Medicine Hat - Rumoured to Alberta. Still has one year of Junior left … Could be a trend …

Connor Prestwich - RMC - Burlington OJHL

Alexandre Pellerin - McGill - Maine NAHL

James Taylor - Ottawa - New Jersey NAHL , originally committed to Maine next year

A case of a guy who got squeezed out of a NCAA spot due to the rule change?
I would assume , I’d also assume the guy going to McGill was hoping to go NCAA as well. I’m curious how many Canadian USHL or more likely NAHL guys end up going USports , pretty sure Dal has two NAHL guys commited .

The guy going to McGill…his brother plays there too, which probably didn’t hurt.

A good source has told me that NCAA Div I teams have entirely stopped scouting the NAHL.

Maybe for the top 20-30ish programs but I find that hard to believe for the rest. Still a very good league and would be surprised if teams do not go take a look at 17-18 year old who are doing well considering its a majority 20 year old league. Also, regardless, I think goalie's will still continue to come from the league...

That’s true now but I imagine the talent level in leagues like the NAHL and BCHL is about to nosedive even worse than USports.
