Rumor: 2025 Trade Rumors and Free Agency | The Aftermath

But the lines were working. We didn't lose because of 5v5 play. You are allowed to disagree, but I will stick with my opinion. Also Bednar did change things up when a line actually wasn't working: He demoted Drouin and slotted in Landeskog. The line improved.
I've figured it out. It's the engineer in me that's causing the disconnect....

You look at something and think...is it broke or not?

I look at something and think... is it optimal or not?

The lines worked... but were not optimal. What I'm trying to say, is that with a different approach it is my absolute belief the lines would have worked even better.

Figured I can share this as a few others know about it as well…

Ross Colton and Miles Wood don’t expect to be back.

End of year interviews with both didn’t go all that well and their agents are aware they could both be traded. Neither are happy with their situations.

Hardly groundbreaking news, but worth sharing.

Learned of a few other tidbits, but will keep those to myself for now as there’s less certainty around those situations.

Thanks, RIAL. I’m actually encouraged, as I think the roster needs some turnover. Would like to see some younger legs on the roster next season.

I do have a question though - for you or the group: what typically happens at these end-of-year interviews? What is discussed? What is their purpose, etc?

Thx.

They’re meant for the organization to give feedback to the player on their season and more importantly things they want them to work on over the summer. Many of these guys use their own skill coaches or other camps, there’s the chance of developing bad habits that the team want to avoid.

The players are asked to give their opinions on how their seasons went and things they think they should be improving on.

In both Colton and Wood’s situations, they were pretty clear with the team that they’re not happy. Team wasn’t happy with them either. Wood feels like he had a huge lack of opportunities. Colton feels like he was soured on as well and should’ve stayed at center.

Ross has some value, mainly due to the sizable increase in the cap, not his exceptional play. I don't see Wood having any value. Suppose you have to hope some GM doesn't mind his salary for the next 4 years and maybe the cap increases help there too. I honestly don't care if we get nothing for them. I think we can make do moving LOC up (if needed) and slot Prisch or Ivan Ivan on the 4th line.

Make of it as you will, but Avs twitter have been doing end of the year spotlights for players the past week or so. So far...

Colton
Wood
EJ
Kiviranta
Nelson
Coyle (was kind of lumped in with Nelson)
Drouin

Pretty much the only one of that group that feels somewhat likely to return is Coyle. I tend not to read much into what the social media people are doing, but it's a little weird.

This is the social media group that pined after Tyson Jost incessantly

Soooooo…Makar to Calgary for future considerations?

You're not wrong. They might have worked even better. Emphasis on the word might.
The engineer in you should also be thinking "if it's not broke, don't fix it".

Colton is an interesting case. He had two really good stretches, one in the beginning of the season and one in the end, both ended by injuries. Then there's the middle stretch before Coyle arrived where he was horrible and we all wanted him gone. I could see a less stacked team wanting to acquire Colton.

Yeah, maybe it's not the engineer but more the theoritical physicist saying it.

Either way, Bednar did expiriment Necas and Nelson in the regular season for a hot second. It worked well, and then he quickly did away with it and never returned to it.

It's these types of changes by Bednar that leads me to believe he might be a victim of his roster. I'm not sure who is in control of who in our locker-room anymore. Because everything that seems to be broke is related to Bednar. And all of Bednar's decisions are about keeping Nate and Cale on the ice all the time and with the best players on the team.

Is this Bednar's system really? Or is Nate making demands about who he plays with?

I feel at this point as much as there is a disconnect between CMac and Bednar, there is probably an equal gulf developing between Bednar and the players.

Colton will have positive value for sure. Quite frankly with the contracts we're about to see this summer I'd say $4M for what he brings is a very solid deal.

Woos... Not so much, but I also dont think he'll be all that hard to move. I can see teams like Anaheim or San Jose being interested in someone like him for their depth situations and given the cap space those guys have I don't think we'll have to attach anything major to move him.

Like I could see a Wood + 4th for 7th type of deal.

Colton I think could fetch exactly what we gave up.

Great news if they can pull off the moves.

Those are absolutely 2 postions and contracts that can slimmed down ideally.

Would put the Avs in a position with a little over 15M with 7 players to sign.

I was confused over their reluctance in Colton to play center as well.

He's inconsistent. Doesn't matter if it's at wing or center. But playing him at center made more sense for the team IMO.

3C is simultaneously a position Bednar is willing to dump players not playing well for long periods of time, like RJ, Newhook, Jost, etc, and a spot they refused to play Colton at because they didn't like his finish to the previous season.

Leading up to the deadline though, they should have been trying to see if they could use Colton at 3C again, so they could maybe use Mitts to trade for a defenseman, or something other than a $5.25M 3C that may handcuff them again with the cap.

They had Colton and Drury as options for 3C, but they really wanted Coyle to play 3C for some reason. It just doesn't never made much sense to me at his cap number, unless they planned on him playing 2C next year.

Colton actually flipped the switch back on a week or so before they brought in Coyle at the deadline on March 7th. You can see it in his game log.

He went pointless for 14 games, from Jan 16 to Feb 23. Then picked up an assist, then a three point game with two goals.

This sparked a mini run he went on from Feb 26 to Mar 22, where he had 2 goals and 12 points in 12 games.

Then went cold again (or injured) to end the season with only one point (a goal) in his last 7 games, before sitting out with an upper body injury.

Colton was one of the few that could play up at wing, and he was more effective there. All of the options were better than him at center in a top nine role.

One of the few things Bednar did, and stuck to that I agree with.
