Rumor: 2025 Trade Rumors and Free Agency | The Aftermath

Nobody, I do not care what data says, NOBODY on planet earth will ever convince me that Casey f***ing Mittelstadt is a better skater than Nazem Kadri.

Nobody.

All y'all remembering Kadri as fast are just not remembering reality.

Also we complained constantly about his ability to use his linemates.

Kadri needed Bura for zone entry, and Nuke for defense. You had to give him wingers that could offset his flaws, we were able to do that.

Kadri was not soft though, and could play through being checked.

I never said fast, I said better. Kadri is incredibly strong on his skates, he is agile, he has tremendous edge work, and he gets up and down the ice just fine.

Casey, meanwhile, is incredibly weak on his skates, doesn't have great edgework, and takes forever to get going. He looks like he is in pain skating up and down the ice.

OK, put that way, I'll agree lol.

I remember Kadri as quick, not necessarily fast in top speed.

He could dart into the holes, and create rush chances by taking passes in the neutral zone or at the blueline, and having good anticipation, and a good first couple steps to catch the D off guard and put them on their heels.

I think that part of his game specifically is why he fit so well, and had success on the rush.

Was about to come in here and say exactly this. Lots of people believe that speed in and of itself is the only component of good skating. It has it's importance for sure, but there are other aspects to quality skating.

FWIW according to Jesse Blake, Tavares is asking for 7-7.5 AAV and the leafs don't want to go over 5 AAV.

Tavares has made enough money in his career I'm sure he accepts less to stay where he wants.

Exactly. I like to think about it as the difference between "quick" and "fast." NHL Edge stats measure "fast," and people sometimes use these metrics to declare such and such a player a "good" skater. But for the NHL (and any top level pro league), it's quickness, quickness of maneuverability plus quickness of thought, that matters most.

This isn't to say that top speed can't be a weapon, but when you see Miles Wood at the very top of max speed for 2024-2025 charts (24.82 mph), you kinda get a hint about its limitations.

Why wouldn't Tavares ask for 7M AAV? He was 12th in the entire league in goals scored last season

With the cap going up significantly for the first time in a long time there will be some GMs that just can't help themselves in overpaying. If a guy like Chandler Stephenson could get north of 6 million *last* summer when the cap only went up marginally than, yeah, Bennett can probably get north of 8 million with term this year. Colorado is either going to go the Necas/Coyle at 2C experiment or try to do it via a genuine hockey trade. I don't think they'll be able to fill that need on the open UFA market.

He’s terrific but I worry the wear and tear of his playing styke will make his contract one that ages very poorly very quickly .

It’s not ideal but signing Jonathan Toews (assuming he doesn’t go to the Jets) wouldn’t be the worst thing

I could see Toews signing with Anaheim to be re-united with Coach Q. He's a guy that prepares and plays the game the right way. Somebody the coach knows, trusts, and can use as an example for how we wants to re-build the culture of the team.

Makes sense , but hopefully he also is more about winning one more cup , which the avs are closer to than Anaheim at this point .

I didn't know he was coming back. Good for him.
