Speculation: 2025 Trade/Free Agency Thread

If Dallas runs out of space and can't re-sign Duchene, he might be a good stop-gap upgrade at center. 53% at faceoffs and has 30 goals & 81 points. He's 34 so it would only be for a year or two. 2 x 5.5 mil maybe. (although I would upgrade Killorn's spot as well)

I’m not going to mock you, but I continue not believing the entire story. I don’t doubt that you have your source, but I believe you’ve been fed bs.
To elaborate on that a bit:

- I don’t doubt that Montreal made that offer.
- I don’t even doubt that Verbeek showed some interest and considered for longer than he should have (not very long), as he was asking his amateur/pro scouting for thoughts on Mailloux.
- We know the Ducks wanted an additional pick in that range, targeting Solberg. They found a way to make that happen without weakening the roster.
- The whole „it was us, the Habs, who didn’t want it in the end“ just reeks of dramatic performance. Since the main interest from the Ducks was Solberg, this deal wouldn’t have been too advanced at the time the Habs allegedly nixed it (after taking Demidov, or even at a time when they realized he was falling to them as some reports appeared to put it). It would have been contingent on the Ducks seeing Solberg was still around with that pick, and there were other avenues to be explored to get him. One of them materialized - one that was easily preferable to the Habs trade.
- Zegras wasn’t dealt. Not in this deal, not in any other. The desire wasn’t there to that degree - if this deal would have gotten it done, I don’t believe there wouldn’t have been others to make it happen, as well.

So, I think Montreal sources are free to continue to talk about this for whatever reason and add to the possibly imaginary lore of this non-deal by introducing reasonings over some „redundancy“ from adding too much talent, but unless there’s something from the other side - the side that made another deal and kept the player throughout - it just doesn’t seem like a convincing narrative.

Pat better be cooking something bigger if he ever decides to trade Zegras.
That trade would've instantly made him largely hated in the fanbase. As others have noted: IF that thing was true.
Trading Zegras for a late first and an AHL offensive d-man who has a similar stat line to SD Gull Roland Mckeown isn’t doing it for you either? Thought it was just me.

I honestly won’t be shocked if Z is moved

But mailloux isn’t a piece we should be getting in return…. Idk that hell be better than any of our young dmen. And if our issue is zegras being 1 dimensional…. Why would we want a 1 dimensional dmen.

It’s weird that Montreal writers/fan base is still spending so much time on zegras discussion lol.

If we move zegras we should add him to a dmen + pick and aim at a bigger name…. No reason to move zegras if we don’t have a forward coming in. And even then you’d still need another stop gap forward until sennecke(our potential pick this year are ready)

Friedman is very reliable so him stating about a deal means it moved past just side conversations and into specifics. However, his statements really do seem to show only the Montreal side of things. There is a huge difference between working on a deal and having a deal in place.

I don't believe there was a set deal that Montreal changed their mind on. I believe they had the framework of a deal and both sides were still considering it, and Montreal was the first to say no, but that doesn't mean the Ducks weren't also planning on saying no. There's also the possibility that the Ducks were using this as a way to gauge who Montreal was going to draft so they would have a better idea if Solberg is available.

Zero chance he signs with a rebuilding team for 5.5 coming off an 81 point season when the cap is going up so much. He would either want at least 7-8M from Anaheim, or would sign a discount contract like that with an actual contender to chase a cup.

I like Duchene as a fit for two years, but he just put up a PPG season. He's going to cost at least $7 per year for the Ducks.

I don’t mind the ducks paying more (9?) to get him as long as it’s no longer than 2 years, but I can’t see him leaving the Stars for us unless it’s a crazy overpayment and I really don’t want us adding another Killorn contract.

You are giving that jackass too much credit.

Duchene’s last two stops have been Dallas and Nashville. Hmmm...what do they have in common??
Good point... both have an 'a' as the second character and double l's.

He could go to Calgary, San Jose, Washington, Carolina, Tampa, or Vancouver next but they won't be as good of fits.
