Speculation: 2025 Trade/Free Agency Thread

I've been critical of Verbeek for certain decisions but I can't blame him for not getting players who have no desire to play in California. I offered a challenge yesterday to provide a list of all the top tier UFA's that have been signed by ANY California team in the last 30-35 years. Someone mentioned Neidermayer. Still waiting for another. Fedorov was well into his 30s when he signed with the Ducks which doesn't really match the age range that Verbeek should be aiming for IMO.

The top tier this year is Marner, Ehlers, Bennett, and Boeser. So mathematically the Ducks have a 1/8 or 12.5% chance of getting one of them. That's a tough bet to take.
Winning is the reason guys don't sign with the Ducks. Chicago, Toronto, New York are all high tax areas and they sign guys. Edmonton signs FA because they win. A decade ago, no one would have signed there for anything.

The Lakers and Dodgers sure don't have trouble getting big time FA to California.

If the Ducks hit 90 points next year and the young guys look like the real deal, there won't be issues signing guys.

This offseason will be tough to get a marquis guy.

I don't think you need to have a full 90 point season to get free agents to believe in the team/direction. The way theyre trending/ending this season, it should be enough to impress the Marners etc to sign up IMO.

It's true. We're going to have to duke it out with other teams for these UFAs. Hopefully we can count on Verbeek to make good offers early in the free agency period. And then we can lord it over the Kings.

Edit: Too subtle perhaps...or maybe you all are just pun philistines.

It’s a common thought that one of Mintyukov/Zellweger will be moved soon. I think the goal would be to trade one of them for an established top 6 player though. Don’t think Chinakhov fits the Ducks needs at the moment.
I wouldn’t be moving Mintyukov. Two way D that are holding their own at 21 in the NHL are cornerstones.

With the cap going up.. Marner is going to ask 13 plus.. To come here he is going to ask 15
If they are willing to give him 13 then they should be willing to go 15. It's only a 15% increase. It's like paying a 6 million dollar player 6.9 in order to get them.

If there is a player to overpay, it is a 27 year old top 10 forward in the league. Not giving Sam Bennett 7 mil of Brock Besser 9 mil, which is the alternative if we are getting a top 6 player in free agency.

If the Ducks do by some miracle sign Marner then they'll have he and Terry blocking Sennecke for the next 5-6 years. Something I'm sure the Ducks management will take into consideration in the snowball's chance in he// that Marner would even consider signing here. Same situation if Boeser comes here.

You make room for Marner, you don't worry about blocking frickin' Terry (no offense Terry).

Out of curiosity, would you have interest in a Gibson for Merzlikins+ type of deal? Gibson is most likely getting dealt in the offseason and Columbus is on the short list of teams that could use a goalie upgrade.
I guess it could happen but I doubt it. CBJ probably thinks of Gibson as a marginal upgrade at best, considering his age and stats in the previous 3 years as a starter. Maybe they're primarily looking for someone younger with potential to take over the #1 job for years to come. But I don't even have a clue who would that be, haven't really studied the goalie market yet.

Thanks for the responses.

I never do these mock trades so feel free to roast me, but just cooked this up.

To NYI:
Strome
Zellweger

To ANA:
Dobson (with assurances he'll sign)

We get an RD to play with LaCombe, free up some space on the LD for a prospect like Solberg (who I think will be more important defensively than Zelly), and free up the 3C for Zegras to run three scoring lines.

Isles get a good prospect in Zellweger and a solid 3C in Strome (their current 3C is Cizikas)
I was thinking about Dobson today as well. I think verbeek would want to do something like this for sure

I wouldn't spend much on Dobson, seems like an unnecessary luxury. If we're spending assets on D I'd do it on high end defensive stalwarts. Reliable shutdown guys. We have puck movers. Our ability to defend is bad, it's the thing we're worst at, so we should address that.
I will be interested to see Vegas’ plans for its defense. Whitecloud is a guy who could fit our team pretty well. They probably end up moving him or Hague.

You may be right but I'm curious why you think they would move either of them. Cap doesn't seem to be an issue and their depth on D is not that good.

Just as an aside - wouldn't you want to shelter Sennecke anyway?

Lets play devils advocate for a second - say we do sign Marner. A right-wing depth chart of Marner-Terry-Sennecke is nothing to scoff at.

I haven't followed Sennecke as much as I would like to admit - but he still looks like a tall, lanky kid that has put next to no muscle on. Wouldn't it be best to have him cook in juniors for one more year, then have him be in the A for next two years? Afterwords he can slot right in and gain confidence by playing sheltered minutes for a couple of years until he can step up in Terrys place if he goes into free agency
