Speculation: 2025 Trade/Free Agency Thread

Agreed about Cronin. This is a BIG offseason for Verbeek. Personally, I think improving the bottom six will go a lot farther improving the team than adding Marner.

One way to improve the bottom-6 is to push down the non top-6 forwards down into the bottom-6 like a Killorn, Strome, Vatrano or combination of the three.

Although, I think acquiring an established offensive minded coach for our several offensive youth forwards will do more wonders b/c we might find or rediscover a top-6 forward or more in our youth mix. Remember when Z was 23 goal and 60+ point scorer for two consecutive seasons. I wonder how much offense Cronin has suppressed upon our youth forwards?

If the issue is Cronin then why sign anyone?

I’d say our biggest issue is the powerplay, which marner would 100% help…. And not for nothing but he’d be leading goal scorer on the team right now…. Now he isn’t a pure goal scorer but he does score goals and he does goals.

I dont understand the Marner talk at all. May as well talk about the possibility of winning the lottery since its more likely.
Meh, not many teams have $14 mil in cap space. Of all the teams that have $14 mil in cap space, we are probably the most enticing with the (goalie tandem, organizational prospect depth, current young NHL players 24 and under, blah blah blah). We aren’t that bad of an place to go.

In 2 years

Cutter (23) - Leo (22) - marner (30)
Zegras (26) - McT (24) - Sennecke (21)

Plus our top 10 pick this year (unless traded at the draft for a Debrincat type trade for a RFA that fits our timelines), Terry (30), Colangelo (26), Vats (32)

Probably, Gaucher (23), Nesty (25)

Plus LaCombe + helleson (26 ea), minty / Zelly / Tristian (all 23), stain (21) … Moore would be like (25) ?

I mean the pitch is pretty simple.

Hi Mitch,

May I call you Mitch ? We will throw the bag at you, how would you like to be surrounded by a top 6 of 21 + 22 + 23 + 26 when you turn 30, and when you’re in your final year at 35 that same top 6 is 26 + 27 + 28 + 31 ?

Thanks,

Depending on the direction Boston goes, I'd rather trade for Pasta than sign Marner. There's a 2 year diff (Pasta 2 years older) but he's exactly the goal scorer we need. No more set up guys.

I personally would part ways with the lottery pick + a high level prospect as the starting point. I'm just not sure of the asking price

Z - Leo - Pasta
Cutter - McT - Terry

Would be a stupid top 6

Sennecke?

I think it would take something like McT + this year's first. But I'd be perfectly okay with that. I'm firmly against Marner but I would be all for a swing for a guy like Pasta (or Tkachuck).

I think trading for Pastrnak is much less likely than signing Marner. I think the chances of the Bruins trading Pastrnak are incredibly slim - that's a team that retools rather than rebuild. Pastrnak and McAvoy are young enough that I think they try to build around those guys.

I would probably go Beckett and the Lottery Pick if possible. I'm souring on Marner because I don't like how his game translates to the playoffs and he's more of a set up guy that CAN score goals. We really need a pure goal scorer.

You might be right but I wonder if an aggressive pursuit / borderline overpay would make BOS change their mind

I'd like to avoid trading our higher end youths and this year's first round pick because we are still trying to develop NHL depth on the team. We don't know who will rise to the NHL level and maintain it. We are only in year 3 of the Verbeek rebuild. Let's actually commit to the full rebuild than to cut it short b/c we're impatient. Imagine trading away LaCombe last summer for a middling forward and then seeing LaCombe become some other team's top-pairing D this season. That would mean we are waiting another year or two or three for a young d-man to peform at LaCombe level this season.

Going FA would be the more prudent action at this juncture. Trading for a scoring forward from a playoff team that will still be over the cap even with the new cap hike would be another prudent action with a third round pick. Or be like geniuses and be like St. Louis to steal away two youths via signing sheet offer (except we can't utilize a 2nd round pick b/c we don't own our own 2nd round pick for this draft).

The crazy thing about this discussion is that if the Ducks did sign Marner, i can't tell if the majority of people would be happy or upset. This type of polarization around acquiring good players is one of the hallmarks of this board lol
Wrong IMO. If the Ducks did sign Marner everyone would celebrate. But the odds of that are not good and there are many of us who don’t want to hear the inevitable bellyaching from people who are upset that their fantasy signing did not happen.

That’s not the vibe I’m getting - I think even people who want him aren’t getting their hopes up and probably would just accept it. wanting him and thinking it makes sense, but knowing it probably won’t happen.

And I don’t agree that everyone would celebrate, at least based on a what I’ve read, but whatever matter of opinion.

I see some people pointing out that he isn’t a perfect player and isn’t with the money. That’s fair. But I’ve seen very few (if any) people say they’d be upset if they ducks signed him. My perception anyway.

Yup. Adding an actual top-6F is a very good thing that everyone would welcome than adding another overpaid Killorn. The expectations and cost of said top-6F is where people start differing opinions.

So you're bellyaching preemptively about bellyaching that hasn't happened?

People are just enjoying hope. Let us have our temporary delusional fantasies.

Some posters won’t allow that….

But I wouldn’t call it delusional fantasies… it is a possibility until it isn’t(he signs somewhere else)… we know PV has attempted many big name forwards via trade and free agency.. so why would that change now…. He’s also on record of wanting to add a top 6 player.

If tkachuk is available everyone here would be on that one.

but we’re not allowed to talk about that

Over the past 35 years (or since the inception of both the SJ Sharks and the Anaheim Ducks) how many true UFA superstars (i.e. Marner caliber) have signed with ANY of the three California teams? The answer can be counted on one hand and still have fingers left over. When was the last one?

Where a healthy dose of skepticism is warranted, it should be employed...especially when there is basically no track record of it ever happening. The funny thing is that the board has collectively resigned itself to knowing that the team will never ever win the draft lottery. One fantasy that few talk about anymore. I guess that's progress.
