Put Terry next to MacKinnon and I guarantee he’d have a couple 90-100 point seasons under his belt right now

I’m not going to say he’s as good as Rantanen but the gap isn’t some outrageous thing where the trade is worth it
i wouldn’t really trade terry for many players based on his contract and stuff…. I think the idea should be to add to terry in our top 6/9

Terry going back in part of a Ratenan sign and trade deal would make the cost of rats, less, dollars wise, meaning we still have money to shore up our bottom 6. Also, we have sennecke coming up. So it’s not out of the question. He’s the oldest of our young core too.

I could see Pat doing something like Gibson/Zellweger/pick for a sign and trade of Rantanen?

With Carolina being one of two teams Gibson wants to go to, I have to think he'd be involved in the deal. That's assuming he still wants to leave.

But I agree with others who have said that if Rantanen is willing to sign here now he should be willing to sign in the off-season as well. Might as well wait and save assets, even if it means spending another $1-2mil on him.

We currently have exactly one top 6 player. Swapping Terry for Rantanen leaves us with exactly one top 6 player, short the one who is currently outperforming Rantanen since the trade. You don’t ditch long term fairly paid Top 6 players to overpay grinders.

Since the trade

Rantanen : 9GP 2G 3A 5P -1, 4 nations 3GP 1G 0A 1P -1

Terry : last 9 GP 2G 5A 7P +5

Rantanen has been a significantly better player. If you switched the franchises they’ve played for the discussion would be a lot different though.

What kind of player do you think the Ducks will get with a pick in the 8-12 range? A middle 6 player or a mid pair D probably that's years out probably. At some point, the Ducks need to start pushing for the playoffs... at the moment they are 6 points out with a game in hand. If they're in the 4-7 point range at the deadline and they can acquire a legit star (assuming he'll re-sign here) they should go for it. There is no guarantee he'll sign here in free agency. If he's not going to sign a contract either before or right after the trade, don't make the move. It's not for a rental, but a long term piece.

I get the frustration of not being a playoff team for the past six years and potentially seven year if we don't make it this season. We currently do not possess enough quality depth to be trading away a Terry, prospects, and a 1st round pick if we are to be legit playoff contenders consistently.

We are in year 3 of the reset rebuild. That is how my mind thinks of where we are as an organization, not year 6 of the rebuild. I don't think we need to "go for it" this year, when the goal was to play in meaningful minutes. The team has too many unknowns to be trading away our depth. Last year, a majority were ready to get rid of LaCombe while hyping up Zell and Minty. This year, LaCombe has skyrocketed past both. Imagine if we traded LaCombe last year b/c of desperation to get better in a hurry?

I absolutely wouldn't move Terry and the 1st... I probably wouldn't move any NHL player Terry's age or younger unless it's swapping positions (even then, I'm not sure i move any). I would try to make a big move with our pick if we can't land a big FA. Preferably a young guy, like the DeBrincat trade... but those aren't available all that often.

Wouldn’t mind another Drysdale/Cutter type trade. Right now winning that trade by a mile, Verbeek looking like a genius on that one.

They need offensive help, and let’s be honest, the D outside of LaCombe and Zellweger, has left a lot to be desired. If they could score more goals it would put less pressure on the D and especially the goaltending.

We’ve got Solberg and Luneau waiting to come up too

Does McTavish move the needle in a deal for Rantanen? Ideally we want to keep Terry so we can actually start building a proper first line:

Rantanen - Z/Carlsson? - Terry
Only way to know the answer to that is to know how highly Carolina regards McTavish. I'm sure they'd be tempted to make that swap for an unsigned Rantanen. For a signed Rantanen? Keep adding. And then add some more.

Based on the little conversation with Carolina fans on boards

Something around
Mctavish(zegras)
Young dmen (minty/luneau/zellweger)
Gibson or 1st

For signed rantanen is prob what you’re looking for at(give or take some smaller pieces.
I’m not sure that makes the team better or worse in either the short or long term. Rantanen will be 29 shortly after the start of the 25-26 season. How long can he play at his current level especially with a poorer supporting cast than he had in either Colorado or Carolina?

Interesting comments from Dumoulin today (Athletic):
“I’ve come to find out and come to learn going to different organizations now that the grass isn’t always greener in different places and stuff like that,” he said.

“We’ve had a discussion,” Dumoulin continued. “Basically, through my agent, we expressed that this is a place that we want to be. I believe in this group, and I believe in the things that we’re doing. I really, really like this group a lot. It’s been a lot of fun to see where we were at the start of the season to where we are now. I see that progression in this group. And I think the expectation this year and next year is to make playoffs. I think you got to put that pressure on this group. … No more four- or five-game losing streaks. We got to nip that in the bud. If you want to make playoffs, you can’t do that. There has to be that pressure, and I want to be a part of it and bring my knowledge and my experience. Keep playing well.”

Cronin on Dumoulin:
“He’s been awesome,” Cronin said. “He’s a quiet guy. I think he’s that typical older defenseman who, in the absence of having a rah-rah confrontational type of image as a leader, he’s more of a galvanizing guy. He’s a soft-spoken guy that does a lot of things behind the scenes, whether it’s having dinners at his house or taking the kids out to lunch.

“Whether it’s a game or a practice or even in the weight room, he works hard. He’s extremely professional. And those guys, they’re money for these young kids. He’s not just a lip-service superficial guy. He’s very authentic. He’s very committed to his craft. And, again, in a quiet way, he’s given these young kids a role model to mirror their habits on.”

The thing I don't understand is why Rantanen would have any interest in a sign and trade to Anaheim if he isn't interested in extending with CAR, who are actually a very good team.

Unless they're just completely lowballing him and we're willing to break the bank, but I don't really see that happening if they were willing to acquire him in the first place.

I echo a lot of what has already been said about Rantanen. Ducks shouldn't be trading for a rental and shouldn't trade the assets to get him if signed. Either sign in the off-season or move on.

More realistic, Jack Quinn in Ottawa could be a low risk, high reward type trade. He seems like he needs a new opportunity and taking Fabbri's spot in the top 9 would be solid gamble IMO. If the rumors that Peterka is available are true, that could be a smart move as well. Someone with consistent 25+ goal potential at 23 years old and winger would be a boost for this team.

Quinn plays for Buffalo, but he's from the Ottawa Valley
