Speculation: 2025 Trade/Free Agency Thread (TDL is March 7th)

  • Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. The admin team will continue to work on existing issues, templates and upgrade all necessary available addons to minimize impact of this new version. Click Here for Updates
  • We're expecting server maintenance on March 3rd starting at midnight, there may be downtime during the work.
I hope we find a way to add players with term.

An interesting parallel trade strategy I'd like to emulate would be our 2009 season when we made the following moves at or around the deadline:

Sutherby for 6th rounder
May for a 6th rounder
David McIntyre (prospect goalie) for Sheldon brookbank
McIver for Mike Brown
Kunitz for Whitney
O'Dell for Eric Christensen
Moen/Huskins for Bonino and picks
Pahlsson for Wiz
Montador for Nokelainen

Now, not all of these deals aged well, obviously, but the goal was to redo pretty much our entire fourth line and bottom pairing while also trying to get younger. Some of the deals were absolute home runs.

The kunitz deal doesn't really apply, that was because our forward core pretty much stalled after the cup win and Bob wasn't patient enough to let them regroup.

But, I would like to see this type of mentality. It is possible to sell guys we don't plan on keeping and look for bottom six forwards that other teams either don't have room for or have run out of patience with. It takes creativity, but there is no reason verbeek shouldn't be looking at stuff like this.
the only saving grace about the kunitz for whitney deal was that BM turned whitney into lubo

murray should've prioritized acquiring a legit 2C after having to trade mcdonald for cap reasons but instead he just traded kunitz whose decline in production was tied to the lack of a 2C

The ducks need to sell the expiring contracts, and see if Gibson wants to go somewhere else/if there’s a suitor for him that’s willing to give us a decent asset.

Aside from that, I don’t think we should do much of anything until June/July

I think we’ll be very aggressive this offseason looking to get better and add pieces to the puzzle.
Got to trim fat and figure out what we need….

If we trade gibson and dumo

Realistically

Top line winger
Reimagined 4th line
Back up goalie
Vet 5/6/7 guy

And then figure out how to improve our special teams, and hopefully get more out of zellweger Mintyukov

The only trade there that made them worse was kunitz for Whitney, which I touched on.

Other than that, I completely disagree with you, given the context. The team was better directly after the trade and they went on a run in the playoffs that could have led to a cup if not for a bad game 7 bounce.

The team missed the playoffs in two of the next three years due to underperformance of our best forwards, pronger being traded, and niedermayer retiring. Of course making moves at the bottom of the roster is not going to make up for that, but that isn't the point of doing it and doesn't mean the trades shouldn't have been made.

I don't see how almost every one of the moves made at that deadline cannot be seen in hindsight as net wins.

The 09 playoffs were great. Hiller was amazing. The whole narrative of Thornton being a choker and the series ending with him slamming his water bottle on the bench. Good times.

I thought Whitney was good for the rest of that season actually. He was bad in 09-10, but I remember him playing well in the 09 playoffs.

Obviously I’d rather have had Kunitz long-term but at least Bob got Lubo.

Would anyone be interested? Very talented, physical head case.

As always, price dictates level of interest. I have no idea how to value an injured head case like Kane but I'd probably be expecting Edmonton to pay me to take him. Edmonton needs the cap space more than the Ducks need Kane IMO. His contract has another year to run after this one.

I’m still thinking PV moves Zegras for the right piece, no old vet or just a 2nd/3rd round pick. Still thinking Cozens, but have zero info on that.

Depending on what Frederick wants, he’s a UFA, he might be an interesting add. One of our vet Dmen, preferably Dumo, might entice the depleted blue line Bruins to engage. Their window is only open a crack.

Prior to Jones trade I was wondering about Gudas to Florida, but we might just keep him for now.

I think our 4th will get rebuilt during the off season. Not sure who would possibly want our 4th at the TDL.

Like others have said, there's no way Z gets dealt unless its him plus another piece or two for a quantifiable upgrade. The exception would be if him and his agent are quietly pushing for a trade, but I haven't heard a single rumbling of anything like that.

Even with his offensive downturns, he's still one of our best and most creative forwards when healthy and we're just way too thin on offense. You'd have to think even Verbeek with his affinity for "bruisers" realizes that you need all types to create a winning team.

hell no

a guy like kane is the last person you want in the locker room with all the kids

I would disagree. I have only ever heard Kane has amazing work ethic and plays hard and fast (and obv, has shown in the past he can score - a lot).

His off-ice issues and immaturity issues, may well be behind him at this point. Anaheim also has a hard-ass coach, GM and they do have veterans to keep the situation under control ie Gudas, Trouba, Strome, Vats, Dumo (for now), even Terry to an extent.

If price is dirt cheap and he'd come here, I think it's worth the risks.

Mods keep deleting posts with links to information about Zegras being offered in trades. Happened multiple times over different instances now.

Hard pass on Kane.

Edmonton is in a scoring slump; 3.25/G vs 3.56/G last year, and 3.96/G the year before. The GA/G is 2.88 and is the same as last year.

They need scoring, especially secondary. If they trade Kane it’s because he can’t score anymore.

At his age and injuries, I don’t think he has anything left in the tank. Too bad he is not a RH shot, he could be paired with Killorn to form the SloMo line.
