Here's my key takeaways from CMac's recent presser.

Ryan Lindgren

"Ryan, obviously he's been a key part of the Ranger back end for a number of years. I think the warrior mentality is what kinda draws you into him. He's an experienced big game player. He's been a key cog on some very good Ranger teams. So I think we've been looking to add another guy that can gobble up some minutes. I think the way we'll deploy him, we think with the bite that he adds, the sandpaper, the hard to play against, a little bit of the ratty component, is something that our sauce needed."

"Bedsy's got a lot of ways he can use him. He can use him with Cale. He can use him with Josh. He can mix and match with Malinski and Kylington. You can get him on the penalty kill and hopefully take some minutes away from you know, some of our top guys who are pushing big big minutes every single night. So that was sort of the thought process."

"The analytics part, we have an awesome department ourselves here. There's sometimes things that we think we can separate some noise and hopefully we'll get a positive player. But we'll bet on the character of Ryan Lindgren every day of the week."

Jimmy Vessey

"He brings good value. He's a guy that Bedsy can use on a second line, third line, fourth line, and he can plug and mix and max, and penalty kill. He's a decent size guy too and he's got some big game experience as well. So he's a good depth add for us and you're gonna need it. You guys all know. You're gonna need it if you're fortunate enough to grab a spot and try to get through the battle that we all know the playoffs can be."

Hank Kempf

"It's just simply a guy we had good reports on, that our guys like, and we were able to get him in the deal. Obviously we've had Matthew Steinberg rip through Cornell and Sam Malinksi. So it's a school that we had a lot of direct, specific looks at our own guy, when our development team was in there, and then watching a free agent like Sam, and you get a lot of shrapnel viewings, and this guy kept coming to us. We think he can skate, he's got decent size, you know he's a guy here that maybe's gonna be ready to turn pro soon. I don't think the fact that he's ready to turn pro is sort of the indicitvie factor of trying to get him. I think we just liked him and we were able to get him in the deal. So we'll se where it goes here in the next few weeks, but we like him."

Mittelsdadt - Asked about Casey and Lindgren's friendship

"Casey we all saw what he did last year, at the end of the year, and into a tough playoff series against Winnipeg, and then Dallas, and then the start of this year was really good hockey. So we definitely need to see that version of Casey and I'm confident that we will. Those Minnesota guys stick together obviously. I think bringing Ryan in, if that is a spark for Casey, or him, all the better for the Avalanche."

Landeskog Update

"Gabe continues to rehab. I think things are, you know he's doing good, he's grinding hard every single day, but I don't foresee him joining practice in the next day or two or week or two here. So I think you guys can figure out where this is kinda going, but hopefully it'll keep going well."

Asked if his comments are a sign he might not play this year.

"Yeah, there's a chance. I mean obviously I can't predict the future, but he continues to rehab. He's not practicing with the team yet. It's 2.5 years and you're not practicing with the team in early March. We're gonna continue to take it week by week here, but he is grinding, he's doing everything he can. It's just I didn't think June 26th, 2022, the injury would be three years. So there is no playbook here. We'll just continue to chip away at it, and he's doing everything he can. That I know. So we'll see where it goes."

Talked a bit about how difficult it must be on Gabe, then...

"For me I hope it's gonna happen for him, but obviously it's been a while. But if anybody can do it I think it's Gabriel Landeskog. I think not only me, Bedsy, our players, our organization, I think the hockey world wants to see it. You wanna see him get back out there and see how he can do. I think everybody's behind him."

Jared Bednar

"I'm highly biased on this. I think Jared is one of the best at what he does in sports, let alone hockey. The way he connects with our players of all different personalities. You know Nathan, Cale, right on down to the respect for players that come up from the minors. The way he communicates and handles different circumstances. We are very fortunate to have him as the head coach here. Again I'm biased, but I think he does a dynamite job day in and day out."

Additional Moves

“It’s no secret that we had to try and get deeper, both upfront and on the backend. I don’t think we’re totally satisfied. If we can still find a way to improve the team, we’ll try. How, I don’t know. We’ve obviously used some draft capital, and things of that sort, but I think we’re deeper.”

Working a 12 hours shift tomorrow to take Friday off as is tradition.

I think we 2 more trades. A fairly insignificant one(I'm thinking Olausson for a #8/9 Dman), and then a bigger one up front.

The question is just how big the one up front is. I'd say:
- 50% that its along the lines of a Donato, Evans, Frederic type of UFA rental,
- 35% chance its a Boeser/Nelson/Marchand bigger name UFA rental....
- 10% chance its a surprise McCann/MacTavish/Zacha "Solid player" type of deal....
- 5% chance its a massive blockbuster and someone like Pettersson/Thomas/Crosby type.

In terms of the cost?

- If its Group 1(Donato/Evans/Fred) I'm guessing we move a 2nd+ prospect, with the prospect being along the Curran/Ivan.
- If its Group 2(Boeser/Nelson/Marchand) probably a 2026 1st + Prospect like Zellers/Nabokov).
- If the trade is Group 3 tier(McCann/MacTavish/Zacha) I'm guessing Mittelstadt is going, maybe with adds on both sides.
- If its group 4(IE Pete/Thomas/Sid), Mitts + Ritchie + 2026 1st is almost certainly the basis.

If Mitts was waiting for CMac to trade for someone that he’s friends with to start producing again, not sure if that’s a good thing

@Bender
Yeah sure but I wouldn't put much stock into that answer one way or another.

He's not going to answer 'yeah we know they are best friends but we've decided to trade Casey so I guess they won't be together very long'...

I'm confident the Avs will try to get an upgrade on Mittelstadt if they can swing it and if not, they'll hang onto him but that's less than ideal. That involves rolling the dice and hoping he can get back to being the confident player he was at the start of the season.

Pretty big gamble.

Perhaps, but I feel like this is said often after comments for CMac or Sakic as GM, and then their comments turn out to match what happened.

I think you can actually read into what they say most of the time. Sometimes it'll be off the mark, but most of the time not.

Obviously he could be being coy with this answer on Casey like I mentioned before, but the key part for me wasn't what he said about their friendship, that could still end up with a trade, it was him saying he's confident we'll see the previous version of Casey, and that if their friendship makes him play better, all the better for the Avalanche.

Those aren't comments you make if you think you may trade someone. You just side step the question and answer a different way with a more vague answer.

My guess is they're already past the "if they can sing a deal or not" part, and they know there isn't one they like, so they're like 90% sure they'll keep him unless someone offers something they weren't before.

I could see a Ryan Donato type trade as a supplement to Mitts though, to give them another option.

Then they'll revisit what to do with Casey after watching him in the playoffs.

I'm ok with this, but THEY NEED ANOTHER DEFENSEMAN! Preferably a 3RD with some size, that's solid defensively, and has a big shot. This is the most important need IMO.

The Avs have to find a way to get Brock Nelson on this team. Casey is not going to suddenly perform because he has friends joining him on the team. He stinks. He's a mediocre 3rd line center. Punt him.

Can you sell me on Nelson? I'm concerned he doesn't have the wheels to play 2C on this team, but I haven't watched him enough lately.

Watching the 4 Nations, they kinda played at the pace the Avs like to play, and it didn't seem like a great fit for Nelson.

A big, goal scoring center, is exactly what this team needs, but do you think he can play at the Avs pace? This is already part of the issue with Mitts.

Maybe they trade for Nelson and keep Mitts for a center depth of MacK-Nelson-Mitts-Drury? I think Mitts would be a good 3C.

His skating metrics seem to show he has good wheels that should keep up in the Avs system.

He doesn’t seem to have a ton of top speed, but looks like he has lots of short bursts. Probably allows him to create separation.

Yeah, I have some doubts on these skating metrics translating to different teams, and different situations, but it's encouraging. Thanks.

Parise I remember having good skating metrics last year as well. His skating didn't hurt him too much on the Avs, becasue he was a smart player, but it definitely wasn't ideal.

I thought he looked pretty good at 4 nations. Certainly not out of place.

If we could afford it, getting Brock Nelson and a Top-9 winger upgrade may provide enough depth that we don't need a high impact 2C (this season). Am I just trying to convince myself everything will be okay? Of course. Do I think that could work out? Well, I just said it would be okay didn't I?
