That's a Sakic thing to say, not a Cmac one. The guy is one of the more aggressive GMs in the league, he had one bad Lars Eller deadline where they had another bigger deal in place that fell apart at the 11th hour, otherwise he's been wheeling and dealing way more than Sakic ever did. He was nicknamed Sleepy Joe for a reason, the guy was patient to a fault as GM

Let's also not forget that it was Cmac who essentially willed the huge Duchene trade to life. I don't think Sakic would have had the cojones to trade Mikko Rantanen either.

I'm far from a Cmac lover, he's had some misses I'm not a fan of, but he gets conflated with Sakic and his style of GMing too much. He's also even more candid and open than KGB Joe ever was

You hit the nail on the head. CMac has been a GM for three years and has made a whopping 27 trades, including two of the biggest in the NHL (Byram/Rantanen).

By Avalanche standards, they have a crap load of cap space ($3.3M). Something's happening, it's just a matter of what it is.

I predict EJ will be an Av and we will pick up JG Pageau. Not sure what for but I think the Avs will get these two players.

It's going to be a Nico Sturm level acquisition and then we're going to hear the usual "the prices where just too high" nonsense from cMac in his presser.

Then the Avs lose to Dallas in round 1.

And then during the summer it will be, “we’re not ruling out adding someone during the season.”

Rinse and repeat.

It's pretty clear the Avs need another top 9 forward with offensive ability. I'm not as worried about the D as the rest of you, especially if we bring in 2 Fs and one has defensive ability too.

I.e. Gourde + Bjorkstrand (ignoring cap, just player types). No one in the bottom 6 can step into a top-6 role when and injury happens, and we don't have any prospects knocking on the door in the AHL to step up in an offensive role when needed. Maybe Ritchie can be that guy if we don't move him, but I don't have much faith and doubt Bednar would trust him in an important game.

Get a middle 6 winger with offensive pop at the very least.

EDIT:
To Seattle:
Mittlestadt (or Wood with extra ++s if the cap works)
Ritchie

To Avs:
Gourde @50%
McCann

Lehks - Mack - Necas
McCann - Gourde - Nuke
Colton - Drury - Drouin
Big time, hard pass. Gourde is an aging, broken down player. 33 years old approaching 50. That ol' groin doesn't stretch out like it used to. There isn't much left in that tank. McCann is a good "grit" player. But I don't think Seattle is actively shopping him around.

The Boston noise seems pretty credible if for no other reason than the fact that they have multiple pieces that would be of interest to the Avs.

Zacha, C $4.75m 2 more years
Coyle, C $5.25m 1 more year
Beecher, C $925k RFA
Geekie, LW/C, $2m RFA
Brazeau, LW $775k, UFA
Carlo, RD $4.1m, 2 more years
Peeke, RD $2.75m, 1 more year

It's not hard to see how a multi-player package involving a center, RD, and/or depth forward forward could be attractive to the Avs.

If AJ's article is anything to go by the Avs were also trying to work out a bigger deal including Frederic before Boston shipped him to Edmonton, so it sounds like there's at least been talks about such an idea.

With the exception of Brazeau those are also all guys with term or team control left which is clearly something CMac likes.
Shut up Carlo. We don't talk business on this forum.

Cmac and his minions hard at work today.

The fact that Cmac solved the horrid Avs goaltending situation with Wood squared was an amazing feat. Everybody knew the Avs were in the market for goaltenders. Care to guess what this season would have looked like with the Georgie and Justus show? Rants agent held a gun to the Avs head and we managed to walk out of the room unnoticed while stealing some jewelry. And Lehky? The Montreal gift that keeps on giving.

McCann is a goal scorer. Agree to disagree on Gourde, I still think he can be an effective rental. I agree he shouldn't be a 2C but it was just an example of adding a guy that would fit our team mold better than Mitts and is a solid 2-way player

Actually it's $4.124m in capspace with a 22 man roster. That is, they can add a 23rd player with up to $4.124m AAV.

Yep.

At this point, I don't know why Middleton is on the roster.

We aren't playing him(1 game since returning from Four Nations break), and Manson might be back tomorrow.

Time to go.
Purely insurance. Manson gets hurt a lot. Who knows how long he'll last. For all of Middleton's detractors, he plays tough nose defense and is a physical presence on the ice. Something the Avs are sorely lacking.
