I have followed this tournament for 16 years and during this time, the goaltending have rarely been a weakness for Sweden, even when there have been question marks in goal heading into the tournament. Most of these starting goalitenders have been able to steal at least a game or two for Sweden in a tournament. A bad game can happen to any goaltender unfortunately. I can think of a couple of goalies that stood out as a complete weakness during this time:
Gustavsson in 2012 (came up clutch when it mattered though)
Dansk (stats might not tell the story here, thought he benefitted heavily for playing behind the most dominant swedish junior team ever)
Hävelid (would follow up a good performance with a real stinker… coincidence that it was the coaches nephew?)
But Thelin really is a different kind of bad in this context. He didn’t really have a good game during the whole tournament. Even against Czechia, where he would over commit on shots, or constantly look outplayed on shots on the PK that got blocked. He’s been terrible to a maddening type of level.. and the worst thing is that he kept getting the nod? Like how bad did he have to be to get dropped? No one would have batted an eye if Gidlöf got the call for the Czechia game. It was the obvious, and none controversial decision. I wasn’t overly impressed with Gidlöf against Kazakhstan, thought he lacked composure. But considering Thelins play, Gidlöf deserved another shot without a doubt. Especially since he’s having the much better season, in a better league. Hävelid really shot himself in the foot by refusing to give Gidlöf a chance at this point. The worst thing that could potentially have happened in that Czechia game would have been if Gidlöf played bad as well. But at least it would have been in the f***ing group stage. Hävelid and management clearly wasn't going to drop Thelin no matter how f***ing bad he was, it's evident at this point.
Thelin didn’t clear the eye test, didn’t put up the numbers, and heading into this game, he had the 3rd worst xG against out of all the goaltenders in the tournament. If the guy was a highly touted goalie prospect, then maybe i would understand this level of trust in him. But this guy somehow has the composure of a chihuahua out there, despite constantly meditating in every single break. He's one of the most mentally weak goaltender that i have ever seen at this level. Every single shot against this guy looks like it can go in.
I seriously don’t know what would be worse? Hävelid FINALLY dropping him (way too late), or Hävelid deciding to give him the chance again after yet another predictable stinker that everyone but management saw coming.
