Speculation: 2025 TDL Discussion

True but $5m is going to be nothing in a couple years.

If you add Rakell now you likely get at least another solid year or two from him. At that point, if his game falls off a cliff you can probably trade him pretty easily to a rebuilding team with cap space looking to add some vet presence. Or a playoff team looking to add depth scoring and you retain some salary for a year or two.
5 Million nothing well sign me up...and how much do the Kings trade...2025 First rounder...more than that...Clarke...Greentree? Don't think management is going to let Dumble Dee Dee Blake trade our first rounder this all the while hosting the 2025 draft...

Vastly overpaying for an older left shot winger with dubious value is right on brand for Blake, so I expect him to trade both Clarke and Byfield for Rantanen.

Makes me want to add him even more.

He'd instantly be 2nd on the team in hits AND 1st on the team in goals and points???

AND he's a right shot forward who can play top line / PP1??
You'd be buying at a high.

17.2% shooting percentage this year. (That will come down)

61.6% O Zone Starts

Playing on a line with Crosby all year.

172 minutes of PP TOI (more than any player on LA)

I just don't understand how that would work without giving up someone like Kempe or Fiala (who I don't think Carolina would want). Carolina isn't going to punt on this season when they're one of the best teams in the league and after giving up Necas.

Rather have Fiala at 8 or Kempe at 9 than Rantanen at 12.5+
This would be a lateral move and team would be right back looking for another scorer. If it did happen without those players, either way get ready for $12.5 30 goal 75/70 point player in this system

The trade deadline used to fill me with excitement, but now it's just dread. I hope another GM saves Blake from himself.
Used to take the day off and sit glued to the TV, Phone and computer. Now I just go to work and pray my phone doesn’t buzz with a trade notification.

I also used to watch the draft to check out the sisters and now I watch and check out the mothers. Maybe I am just getting old and crotchety.

Same, the whole front office needs to be wiped clean. I feel like any moves made will mortgage the future even more for a short term gain that doesn't even exist.

I like Boeser but the liklihood of the Kings getting him is Slim and None and Slim just left the building...go the cheap route...Sprong to rescue the PP or Kuzmenko...both Rightshooting LWingers/RightWingers
Sprong can’t even break through on the Kraken roster. He’s on their AHL team and is a floater who plays zero defense. Forget about him.

Reports came out recently that the Kings are open to moving their 2025 1st despite the draft being hosted in LA. I forget the source but I remember it being credible.

If you can somehow get Rakell without giving up a 1st, I'd be all over that. If you need to offer something like 2025 1st, Moore, and a B level prospect - I'd certainly think about it. No to trading Clarke but at this point if they aren't going to play him / put him in a position to succeed maybe they should trade him before they completely torpedo his value / career.

Also no to trading Greentree in a deal for Rakell. Would need to be a proven star a level above Rakell for me to be remotely okay with including Greentree in a trade.

The price would need to be reasonable.

Also, if acquired he'd be playing either with Kopi and Kempe or Fiala and Byfield. Obviously none of those guys are Sidney Crosby but he'd still be surrounded by talented linemates. He'd also be a staple on PP1 (which would allow Laferriere to slot down onto PP2). I wouldn't expect exactly the same production in LA but he fits the Kings need exactly and he's been hot all year.

If Rat the rental came, my guess would be Clarke + Turcotte (or Moore if they prefer) + 2026 1st (or one of Greentree / George).

One of several reasons I have lost all faith in this front office, once they started to think they were legit the trades have pretty much been sub par. Then on top of that they try to get out of the mistake with another bad deal and it just goes round and round
I lost faith when Dumb Dumb Dumble Dee Blake drafted Clarke instead of a legit scorer in D Guenther who by the way is Right shooting LW/RWinger

Didn't they call it a "retool" initially? It's entirely feasible, maybe even likely, that the Kings mgmt saw the period of subpar performance and high picks merely as opportunity to add assets that can be used for another kick at the can for Kopitar and Doughty. Maybe, internally, there's never been any excitement or mandate to grow the new faces of the LA Kings.

If you look at it like that, their handling makes a lot more sense. If there was no vision to see the Fabers, Vilardis etc. as the faces of a new generation of players, then them being moved is hardly shocking. The player development - it makes more sense when you're looking at it as developing plug and play footsoldiers with the mandate to win alongside Kopitar and Doughty, rather than a personal growth opportunity for a new generation of players. The latter's inevitable growing pains don't fit a win-now mentality, so atypical talents who don't provide immediate utility in a supporting role are stuck in limbo of AHL or checking roles that don't fit them or dealt for finished products.

Everyone knows giving a 28 year old winger like Rantanen a massive contract is the wrong move when you don't have an established #1 C or #1 D in the same age-group or younger. But this is the kind of move that will ensure franchise stability without anyone losing jobs or making hard decisions, of course ultimately at the cost of actually competing for the Cup. I have already speculated a while back that I would not be surprised if internally they talked Elias Pettersson when there were rumors of him being available. With Kopitar and Doughty aging out and with the prospect of facing the catastrophy of their own doing when that happens, I would bet good money that the acquisition of a star player is high on their priority list in near future.

Why do I think that? It would be interesting to know who actually holds the most power in the Kings hierarchy but I am increasingly convinced that somewhere in this chain of command the main philosophy is financial stability, job security, nepotism and avoidance of losing over actual desire to win. Totally different than Dean Lombardi, who managed to manoeuvre through this power-hierarchy to make his vision, of winning, the one that ultimately won out.

My belief is there is something inside the corporate power-hierarchy of the Kings that has resulted in a franchise that prioritizes financial and corporate stability even at the long-term expense of winning, that is, of actually having a chance to realistically compete for the Cup. Lombardi gets plenty of credit for his hockey moves, but maybe we didn't give him enough credit as an executive that manoeuvred through this maze of self-interest and power-hierarchies to protect his hockey vision.

It's one thing to merely look at the failure to build a Cup contender from the perspective of hockey operations, but increasingly, after Lombardi, I don't think this organization was ever interested, nor is it presently interested, in creating a new generation of key LA Kings players and faces of the franchise. It just hasn't been high on the priority list. And I think ultimately this is a consequence of some inside power-hierarchy interests driving this thing. It's not a pure hockey matter.
