Surprised to see Arsenal connected to Rodrygo.

Less surprising are rumours a Gyökeres deal is close

I read a great article over the last couple of days by BC, who went in-depth on the Berta hiring. It's long, but here: Meet Andrea Berta


Bill pretty much concluded the following three aspects of Andrea's transfer history...

- His top deals were flops, but most of that was due to him buying them young without much proven history (ie: Felix). Gyokeres has much more backing at this point, but he very much is a Berta signing. Also, a lot of high-quality youth he wanted clashed with Simeone's style, so a lot of the top-tier buys he was able to get, like Vermeeren, didn't work because Simeone couldn't make it work.

- His mid-tier buys were his shining glory, which made Atletico a CL finalist and La Liga winner. Additionally, he made an almost insane amount of profit every single time a player from this category was sold (Hernandez/Rodri/Griezmann/Felix to name a few).

- He is very good at using loans to increase players' marketability and can sell players for market worth (something we have lacked, HUGE, and I mean HUGE problem for the last twenty years). He is almost Chelsea 2.0 in how he used loans. It seems he wouldn't be dumb enough to allow Ramsey situations to afold where he was allowed to leave on a free and miss a 60 to 80 million Euro profit. However, it also seems like we have a chance of buying more Pepes' under his watch (if he hasn't learned from his mistakes).

- He also seems like someone to get deals done in a manageable time, and that is from his great relationship with agents. It would make sense that we have struggled to get deals done for entire summers and he comes in and we buy Zubimendi, Gyorokes, and Garcia all in the first two weeks lol.

You know, the funny thing here is that Arsenal would be much better off signing Rodrygo than Nico. They need a LW that is going to provide a ton a goals. Nico is not the finisher that they need. An inconsistent finisher is probably the last thing Arsenal need; not that Nico doesn't do everything else well.

Its a stylistic thing. Arsenal need a no doubt double digit goal scorer. They don't really have time to wait for Nico's finishing to develop.

Eh we talked about this I don’t think it’s a finishing issue but how he’s been used. The second Nico leaves Bilbao you will see him score and assist a lot more.

Maybe? But there isn’t really a ton of evidence yet, and I don’t know if a move to Arsenal is the club to unlock that offense

I mean, Arsenal has had success taking a Real cast-off and getting him to the top of his game, but the numbers I was seeing for Rodrygo were like 100 m euros, not exactly "project" money. I don't know, I honestly haven't paid enough attention to him as a player to have an opinion on him

All from Ornstein:

- Saliba and Arsenal are talking about re-signing to stay in red London. However, Saliba sort of knows his worth and that won't come cheap, considering he's a top-tier CB and has been starting for France for a long time now. The good news is that even though RM are still interested, he is very happy in London and wants to stay (he's not disgruntled whatsoever).

- Arsenal is also still working on contracts for Trossard, Martinelli, Nwaneri, Gabriel (CB), and Partey. However, it seems like they do NOT want to overpay for Thomas, so they do not have any problem going out and replacing him.

- Arsenal's main #9 target is Isak and they are hoping Newcastle doesn't make the CL to get him. Nonetheless, Gyokeres is their true realistic target. Berta knows him quite a bit and likes him as a player, which is why he has been heavily rumoured to us in the last couple of weeks. The expectation is that Sporting would take £60-70 million for him instead of his £85 million release clause. Sesko is another candidate, but Arsenal is much less interested in him after he declined them last year.

- Other #9 targets that are more of Arteta's interest are Ollie Watkins, Hugo Ekitike, or João Pedro.

- Arsenal definitely wants an LW. Nico Williams is at the top of that list, but others within the shortlist include Rodrygo, Rafael Leao, and Jamie Gittens. One area I am unsure about is that some reports say Arsenal need to offload a player to get a move done here, while others think they want to add more depth to the forward core.

- Ornstein still says that Zubimendi will join us. However, how they bought Partey through La Liga offices and did not go through Atleti really pissed AM off. Because of that, Arsenal are talking with Real Sociedad, so rather of paying in one full instalment like most release clauses are, they can potentially make scheduled payments for a couple of years of 60 million Euros instead (which is more favourable).

- Arsenal also needs a backup goalkeeper, and once again, Joan Garcia is the club's main target. The problem is the release clause. Espanyol did not want to negotiate anything last time, and they might not want to this time either.

- Berta is looking at an LB as well (no word on any targets). Tierney is going back to Celtic and Zinchenko has been made available on the transfer list, which means there will be a hole that needs to be filled.
