Two networks are running 3-hour prime time specials, it will be the most watched thing between the draft and preseason.

I imagine it's for people like me who might plan a trip depending on the date. Several years back it was the once every 8 years that the Chargers played at Lambeau. So my friends and I thought about going if it was a September/October game.

I like to do silly sports trips in September/October since that'll be the short overlap where I could see baseball/football/hockey in one stop. I haven't been as into the Chargers since they left town, but if they happened to play at the Cowboys, Giants, or Raiders in September/October, that might affect my vacation plans. I've been gradually knocking off every MLB park, I finally did Minnesota a couple seasons ago and it worked out where I saw a Twins game and Chargers@Vikings the same weekend.

Looks like the NFL wants to set viewership records. People are always up for Cowboys schadenfreude.

As another poster mentioned a portion of it is planning a trip. If your team is playing a Brand name team you may wish to travel there for the experience. Or to a destination city like Miami, LV, etc to make a weekend out of it.
For some it’s planning your weekends if you have tickets. Especially for those who are fans of the current elite teams who are going to get the event day games like Black Friday, Xmas, etc.

Some clubs like the chargers have done a cool job of their release by doing an anime style release of their opponents.
 


Also to add onto the point, nobody actually watches the schedule release shows. They throw it on there because it's NFL, but the schedules are released prompty at 7 pm and then the talking heads spend 3 hours breaking it down. No, I just need one or two minutes to look at the tweeted official schedule and break it down.

Eagles/WFT weeks 16 and 18 is lame but could be a good week 18 night game.

Each team releases their own schedule online. Chargers have gone anime style the past 3 seasons I believe. Other clubs go cheap and just drop a visual and that is all.

Talking heads go through various teams and predict their record. They take into account travel, time, short week, etc.

Fans pretty much just want to see a quick list of when they play their key opponents and if their club does anything interesting for their release, they will catch it online.

I'm not a big fan of divisional games within 3 weeks apart. Prefer like a 5 week break between. By putting what they expect to be the top and 2nd seed in the divisional for the final week, they are hoping that they are tied or that the winner takes the division, ala SF/SEA all those years ago when SEA got stopped inside the 1.

But, it could also be a nothing game and thus a wasted quality game had it been played in week 10.
