News: 2025 RFA offer sheet compensation thresholds revealed

who are the likeliest 9.3M$ targets? Bouchard is the main 1 that comes to mind, i don't think teams want to be throwing out big money like that for players that aren't gonna live up to their contract either

at 9.3M you're basically paying for a great PPG player or top pairing dman

EDM immediately matches and makes the necessary moves to make room.

By immediately match, I guess I mean they make up their mind immediately. Teams typically wait until the last day to match as a f*** you to the offering team, to keep their cap locked up.

Im not saying this would happen, but if someone offersheets JJ Peterka around that 9M mark (I dont think he is worth it but it may happen), the Sabres would probably let him go

Knies and Bouchard may be prone to a Canes-style offer sheet. What I mean by Canes style is a 1 year contract at an extremely high cap hit. I think teams like Buffalo or the Islanders, who aren't contending yet, will be far more likely to match any offer sheet given out.

The absolute biggest threat this year in the offer sheet world is Carolina, and it isn't particularly close. Nearly $30M in space, two extra firsts from the Rantanen trade, and their first round picks are almost certainly going to late firsts for a long time to come. They could throw a 1x17.6M offer sheet, give up four first round picks, and not squander their future.

The really aggressive GMs don't have a lot of draft capital to pursue this avenue this summer. BriseBois has a second and a third in '26; McCrimmon has a second and a third in '26; Bowman may want some retribution this summer (not necessarily with StL) but he too only has a second and a third. MacFarland does not have anything until the fourth round in '26; and the Rutherford/Allvin combination does have a first, second and fourth. Drury has a first in '26 if he wants to keep it, plus a third. Fitzgerald has his first, second and third, so maybe New Jersey is the team to watch out for here?

I think what happened last summer will lead to TRADES involving RFAs as opposed to straight offer sheets. Those that will be the most aggressive will need to find creative ways to do so, and they usually do.

its already been said that knies isn't entertaining offer sheets and i doubt anyone offer sheets bouchard cause its not worth the draft picks for the compenstation to even make him entertain bouchard.

No one is gonna give up 4 first round picks for bouchard and no way in heck anyone one is gonna toss a 17.6m 1 year offer.

Tulsky is the major outlier here. Watch out for them. They can easily trade for their own 3rd round pick.

I would do it for Dobson, rather easily, actually. Slavin-Dobson would automatically become the best 1st pairing in the league.

Anyone offering Bouchard 9.3 mil is doing Edmonton a favour. They match that in their sleep, especially considering he’s having another excellent playoffs. He’s a guy that elevates his game when it matters.

9.36M is an easy match, 9.4M would make them think with an extra 1st added.

Oilers have 10M+ in cap space once you send guys like Josh Brown and Max Jones to the minors.
They will likely have to walk away from Frederic and Klingberg after the playoffs but rest of the squad could remain the same even if Bouchard gets 9.5M per
How do the oilers have 10+M in cap space?

Factoring in their existing contracts, if they run a 20 man roster and fill out the 3 roster spots from federic/brown/perry with league minimum 775k players, that leaves 9.3M according to cap wages.

This would include sending Josh brown/troy stetcher to the minors.

Unless I missed something, the oilers likely match, but this would put them 60k over the cap. It’s not advised to run a 20 man roster, so I’d imagine the oilers would be forced to pay to dump arvidsson or Kane if this were to happen.

What was Knies going to say? “Yes, I would love an offer sheet!” In the middle of a playoff run? Not calling him a liar but wouldn’t think that comment is as definitive as you are thinking

Honest question... why would Arvidsson waive his NMC? No contender is going to take him.

It's hard to say, depends how much he's offered elsewhere. If a team offers Bouchard 9.36m x 5... would the Oilers match? They only have 9.41m in space currently and almost everyone making 2m or more has some form of trade protection, many having full NMCs... it really seems like a they're f***ed if they do and f***ed if they don't situation
Yes we would match. But it doesn't get there imo.

Last year was a special sort of f*** up. Holland and Armstrong are apparently like brothers, and there has been whispers that Holland may have set some of this up as he was pissed about being ousted. Even still, I don't think they expected to get both guys.

It was also with 2 players chomping to get nhl ice time (and 1 who demanded a trade previously) and had never been paid, not our star Dman who has already earned millions and plays every minute he can handle with 2 superstars. There was also a level of arrogance from the Oilers brass coming off a finals run, that we don't need guys who value the paycheque over the team, which was a foolish mistake with valuable, young depth guys, that I highly doubt they repeat with a player of Bouchards calibre.

If Bouchard gets an offer, his agent just goes and puts it on the desk to show the Oilers the ballpark they need to be in. I don't think he signs anything besides an Oilers offer. If he does sign someone else's offer, we just match and then he's put a target on his head for a hockey crazed market. That's a lot more uncomfortable than just working with us and gains him little, while also risking him having to uproot his life and leave a SC contender with multiple HOF players.

Knies is a bit of a unicorn in the NHL atm. Teams should definitely be lining up to offer him $7M+. The Leafs could match that. But Knies would be dumb to limit his options, and whatever he says right now in the playoffs shouldn't be taken as the final word on that. The Leafs are going to have to PAY him.

They can afford to. Maybe not him AND Marner AND Tavares, though. I don't think that's a very difficult decision for the Leafs, however... you keep Knies+one of the UFAs. But he's getting $$$... unless he's an idiot. :dunno:

so you want to over pay and have to give up several picks just to get leafs to not match and especially multi first. Why would he accept less than 5 years?

So you’re factoring in a trade that hasn’t happened.

The oilers don’t have 10+M in cap space but as I mentioned, if an offer-sheet does come through at 9.36, they’d have a week to trade out a guy if they haven’t prior to.

Is there a playoff team which has the requisite 1st+2nd+3rd and Cap space? I imagine there is, but maybe not. Anyway, any team who plans to be competitive (not lottery teams) and fits the criteria should be willing to give up the 5x$9.3M.

I think the Leafs should and could match even that, however? Although it would maybe make them sweat just a bit. If they KNOW Marner isn't staying, then that would certainly make it easier.

I don't know that any team should stretch above the $9.3M threshold. So I guess we're just waiting to see how the Leafs do in the playoffs and what Marner thinks about it all? Knies can get that money... and he'd be dumb not to take it... just a question of whether it's from the Leafs or somebody else, right? :dunno:
