Red Sox/MLB 2025 Regular Season II

Nope. It's almost always a bad idea, whether the batter is good or bad at bunting. Most of the time, you're doing the other team a favor by bunting.

They don't need to put him on the Injured List. He has options. They can just send him to Worcester.

I don’t see it any longer, especially with the extra innings rules in play.

To me, again, assuming a player can do it well, it’s no different than working the count to try to get a specific pitch that’s favorable to the batter.

Guys like Carew and Brett Butler were as good at bunting as guys like Reggie were at hitting HR’s.

With his speed, if Duran could just get a bunt down on the ground, he’d easily hit .400 on bunts.

Obviously there are many times when it doesn’t make sense, but leading off an inning vs. a tough pitcher or late in a close game with runners on base, it could be such a weapon.

Again…..Laslty ….provided he spends about 2 hours a week practicing it.

He is, but he's not wrong here.

Once they die the lifetime ban as been served.
Section 40 of the 1919 rules does not use the term “lifetime ban.” It uses the term “forever disqualified”. While that is specific, it's not clear whether this relates to the Hall of Fame (see bold text below). An argument can be made for both sides.

“Sec. 40. Any person who shall be proven guilty of offering, agreeing, conspiring or attempting to cause any game of ball to result otherwise than on its merits under the playing rules shall be forever disqualified by the President of the League from acting as umpire, manager, player, or in any other capacity in any game of ball participated in by a League Club. …”

Language is so interesting.

Is election to a hall of fame, actually:

“acting as an umpire, manager, player, or in any other capacity in any GAME of ball participated in by a league club”?

I can see an argument for both sides, but as much as I couldn’t stand Pete Rose, I think he’s served his time.

The ambiguity would be "in any other capacity". The rule was in effect in 1919, but the first Hall class was 1936. The gambling rule is straightforward. The penalty is permanent expulsion. However, after reading a bit more about it, Giamatti didn't include a Hall of Fame provision.

ESPN: "When asked at a news conference whether Rose's punishment should keep him out of the Hall of Fame, Giamatti said he'd leave that decision to the baseball writers who vote every year on players eligible for induction."

There are two rules: one that was in effect while Joe Jackson and his teammates were playing, and another during Pete Rose's era. Landis' ruling was sweeping and definitive. Giamatti's was a deal between Rose and MLB. Rose agreed to the ban and to drop his lawsuit against MLB if Giamatti didn't issue formal findings about him betting on baseball. Of course, the federal government sent Rose to prison for tax evasion over unclaimed memorabilia signings, gambling and other violations.

Personally, I'm of the opinion that anyone who gambles on the sport they are participating in has damaged its credibility. A permanent ban is warranted.

People take this shit way too seriously. It's just a museum.

Pete Rose was a dipshit but one of the greatest players of all time. He and all the steroid guys should be part of the museum just for their impact on the history of the game, good or bad.

This bullpen is garbage. The nerds in front office have failed for years trying to put it together. Just an extremely mediocre team.
